Creating an Outline
An outline helps you arrange the order of ideas in a paper. Many students eliminate outlining in the writing process as an unnecessary step. However, writing an essay without an outline can create disjointed results. An outline provides a roadmap so that the essay can move smoothly from point A to point B to point C. Without an outline, the essay could easily become disorganized, e.g., A, B, A, C, B. This can confuse readers because the points of the essay are not arranged in correct sequence. Use the following suggestions to create an effective outline.
Creating Correct Formatting
The following information will help you format an outline correctly:
 Include at least two elements under each of the sections in the outline. If you have only one element, however, you can add additional information to create at least two points.

 Create parallel wording at the beginning of each section of the outline. If the first word begins with a noun, the first words in all other elements in that section must also begin with nouns. If the first word is a verb, the other elements must begin with verbs, etc.

 Include a period, and space or tab after each letter or number. Be consistent on using spaces or tabs throughout. (See the sample outline below.)

 Use double spacing in the outline for ease in reading or use single spacing throughout and double space between each of the major elements (I, II, II).

 Capitalize the first word after each number or letter in the outline. Also capitalize proper nouns, but do not capitalize the other

Four Main Components for Effective Outlines Ideally, you should follow the four suggestions presented here to create an effective outline. When creating a topic outline, follow these two rules for capitalization: For firstlevel heads, present the information using all uppercase letters; and for secondary and tertiary items, use upper and lowercase letters. The examples are taken from the Sample Outline handout. Parallelism—How do I accomplish this? Each heading and subheading should preserve parallel structure. If the first heading is a verb, the second heading should be a verb. Example: I. CHOOSE DESIRED COLLEGES II. PREPARE APPLICATION ("Choose" and "Prepare" are both verbs. The present tense of the verb is usually the preferred form for an outline.) Coordination—How do I accomplish this? All the information contained in Heading 1 should have the same significance as the information contained in Heading 2. The same goes for the subheadings (which should be less significant than the headings). Example: 1. VISIT AND EVALUATE COLLEGE CAMPUSES ...

The company seems to use the terms mission statement and vision statement interchangeably as they both seem to be extremely similar, the mission statement being an abbreviated version of the vision statement. The company values seem to be what the company put the most thought into. As upon closer inspection one can see the subcategories and descriptions that the company lists for each of its values. Vision First lets evaluate the company’s vision statement, “…..to be North America’s best food and beverage company, and we’ll get there by continuing to offer products consumers love, creating a performance-based culture that motivates and excites employees, and becoming the best investment in the industry.” A vision statement is designed to be forward thinking which in fact this...

The Moral Compasses of Life

...Outline Template (Microsoft Word) Beginning on the next page is an outline template (in Microsoft Word format), which is filled in with a sample to show you what a final outline looks like. Here is how to fill in your own outline: Triple click on a sentence to highlight it. (Or swipe across it with a mouse’s left key held down.) Type your sentence. (The original words should automatically disappear; if they don’t, use the Delete key to eliminate them.) When you don’t need an outline subdivision (such as “C” or “3”), delete the line. When you need to insert a new subdivision, place the cursor at the end of the sentence immediately above where you want to insert, press Enter, go the Style drop-down menu (typically located next to the Font drop-down menu) at the top of the screen, and select the appropriate style: For I, II, III, etc., choose Outline 1 For A, B, C, etc., choose Outline 2 For 1, 2, 3, etc., choose Outline 3 For a, b, c, etc., choose Outline 4 NOTE: You will need to manually enter the correct letter or number, and you may need to change letters and numbers above and below your new entry. At times, you may need to use the Tab and Backspace keys to align entries properly. • TROUBLESHOOTING TIP: If Microsoft Word performs undesired formatting—such as inserting unwanted letters and numbers and changing the indentation—go to Format menu, click AutoFormat, click Options, choose the “AutoFormat As You Type” button, and deselect...
