...Here at Gulf Coast Academy Charter Schools the language arts program is my favorite. Each year the classes are interesting and engaging with a series a series of amazing books. Always remember to follow along with the book or risk failing the test that you will have each Friday. The test will review the previous chapter you have read so far. In language arts if you happen to fail a test you can stay after on language designated clinic days to repair the grade to at least a seventy percent. One of the Language Arts teacher at Gulf Coast Charter Schools says, “The best book the incoming sixth grade class will be reading is The Watson’s go to Birmingham, because it teaches you a lot about the civil rights movement.” You will have many writing assignments. ...VMy Writing While Growing Up I grew up in a family of writers. My parents are both writers. My dad was an editor-in-chief at a major internet magazine while I was growing up. While I was a young child, both my parents owned and contributed to a programming magazine. I was always encouraged to write as a child. My parents would always help me edit and change my writings in school. Even my brother has always been a writer. He was always telling stories growing up. When he was in middle school he even wrote a book. Growing up in a supportive family of writers has given me a negative outlook on writing which has made me the writer I am today. Since I can remember, I have always been told I am a good writer yet for some reason I have always fought the writing process. English was one of my worst subjects in high school. Yes, it is my native language, but the reading part is not my problem. Writing the essays was my biggest challenge. Starting an essay has always been the hardest part for me. I was taught to always start at the beginning and finish with the end. Later people told me I could write the beginning last, but I was stubborn. I had to write it first. This hindered me. I would usually wait until the last minute because I did not know where to begin. Procrastinating has always been my fall back when writing. Even now, I am writing this essay on Sunday at 2:30pm the day it’s due. My parents would never push me to write, they would ask the usual parental question of, “Did...

...Finishing my eighth grade year, I decided that middle school seemed fairly easy and that I needed to challenge myself. When I scheduled classes for high school, I made the bold decision to take speech and creative writing, even though I knew it might ruin my goal of having a perfect grade point average in the future. I recognized that I was a weak writer and a poor public speaker, but that only increased my efforts to succeed in those two areas. Learning the importance of confidence, speech and creative writing proved to be two of the most valuable classes that I have taken so far. Throughout my entire highschool career, I have studied through the most challenging math and English curriculum and the one Advanced Placement class my school offers. Coming from a small school, I understand the importance of how well a tight-knit group of students can work together and the friendships that are...

...I have to admit I was nervous about coming into a three week writing class. I’ve always been pretty paranoid about my writing style in general. I find myself hestating a lot about my grammar and word choice, being that my highschool did not have the best learning environment. I was a very low funded school and the teachers did what they could with the little amount of supplies they were given. However I’ve always loved creative writing, I like to think of myself as a creative person. I had my doubts about taking a class that required so much writing in a little amount of time but I took on the challenge head first, just like I do with the rest of my problems. In my first essay I wrote my argument paper about how “white feminism” isn't as inclusive as it claims to be and discriminates against numerous minority groups. I chose this topic because it’s something I’m extremely passionate about. I’ve been officers of several social justice orhinatiocs and I’m always up for rallying for human rights. The arguments that I made in this essay were showcasing a couple of ways that “white feminism” left minority groups feeling left out and not worthy of a voice within social justice platforms. Such as Patricia Arquette giving a speech about how minority groups did not help out feminism, even though many people in minority also identify as women....

...Letter of Recommendation March 10, 2015 Dear Admissions, Its my great honor to write this recommendation letter for my stand-out student Ao Liu as part of his application process to your esteemed and highly sought-after university. I know for a fact that Mr. Liu, who goes by the English name of Axel, considers your institution to be his dream university. Your acceptance would mean a lot to the impressionable young man. I have been working with Axel for over two years now in our English Academic Writing class at China Agricultural University (CAU). I have rarely found such an enthusiastic and independent youngster that classmates look up to as Axel. I have always known him to make efforts to rise above his cohort and he shines brilliantly in the process. He has shown improvement in writing skills through my course and can always hit the top 10 percentile when he puts forth efforts. Both his current IELTS score and GPA prove this point well. Axel is currently sitting at 13.30/16.00 in GPA and his total IELTS band score as of this writing is 6.0. As his English writing teacher, I know Axel's strong point in language is writing, but I have heard from other faculty about his successful conquests in math and finance as well. Axel's work on the homework shows an enthusiastic and adventurous spirit. I also know that he is a very outgoing and creative youngster as his hobbies and interests point out. As his school club choice and private hobbies show, Axel is interested in outdoor...

...parents as unconcerned “slackers” perhaps we could all benefit from a thorough understanding of how we can find potential solutions to fix this problem. No school or teacher can ever substitute for an engaged parent but we definitely need parents and teachers to work together so we can have a child succeed both academically and socially. “Statistics show that students whose parents are actively involved in their education do better at school, regardless of their family income and background. Specifically, students with involved parents have greater academic success, better attitudes about school, and fewer behavioral problems. This makes sense, since parents are the central figures in the lives of their children “(Molland, 2007). Once a week, my friend volunteers at her son’s elementary school...

A self-styled "black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet," writer Audre Lorde dedicated both her life and her creative talent to confronting and addressing the injustices of racism, sexism, and homophobia. Her poetry, and "indeed all of her writing," according to contributor Joan Martin in Black Women Writers (1950-1980): A Critical Evaluation, "rings with passion, sincerity, perception, and depth of feeling." Concerned with modern society's tendency to categorize groups of people, Lorde fought the marginalization of such categories as "lesbian" and "black woman," thereby empowering her readers to react to the prejudice in their own lives. While the widespread critical acclaim bestowed upon Lorde for dealing with lesbian topics made her a target of those opposed to her radical agenda, she continued, undaunted, to express her individuality, refusing to be silenced. As she told interviewer Charles H. Rowell in Callaloo: "My sexuality is part and parcel of who I am, and my poetry comes from the intersection of me and my worlds. . . . [White, arch-conservative senator] Jesse Helms's objection to my work is not about obscenity . . .or even about sex...

...When I was in high school, I took creative writing course. Because at that time, I just arrived USA, so I wanted to improve my English writing ability. However, when I began to know this course more, I was deeply attracted by this course. I remember there was a time, the teacher asked us to get outside and sit in front of the lawn, and wrote down what we felt. It is really a memorable experience to me. In China, I usually sat in the classroom and racked my brain to write, and I always failed to convey my thoughts and feeling accurately. I sat in such a peaceful place, listened to the birds, to the insects, to the wind. My pen seemed beginning to control me. I just wrote down what I thought, what I felt. I felt free and relax, like flying in...

...plays a huge role in my life it seems like every minute of every day is planned out. Having two small kids you have to schedule everything around them and their activities, so having a healthy balance is essential to my everyday life. My first idea and probably the most important is time management. Using this tool to make up a schedule to prioritize the most important tasks at the top of the list would help me greatly in achieving my goals. Blocking certain times for different tasks and making sure that I set out certain times for my daughter’s homework and playtime. For school just writing down when I have class, when my assignments are due or when I have a quiz or test. Keeping myself organized is a huge time saver. Making sure that I manage to give myself some personal time is also key so that I don’t burn out. My second tool for success is using the weekends to my advantage. Having to work a full-time job and being a single mother you don’t get a lot of time to manage how you are going to tackle the week ahead. So because I work from 6am till 3:30p.m., pick-up the kids and drop them off at a sitter then take a 50 minute car ride to school you kind of have to be a little creative during the weekends. So I try to carve out time each day starting with Friday to tackle the bigger assignments so that on Saturday I can take the time to help my daughter’s finish their homework for the week. Sundays are usually reserved for the lighter parts of my assignments. How I...

...the hardest thing possible. I have switched back and forth using technology and not using technology. My whole life I have leaned on technology to help me with my school assignments, or to entertain me. During technology- free week, I was not allowed to use technology at all, and I had to rely on pencil, paper, and books to do my homework and entertain me. During technology week, I was not allowed to use pencil, paper, or read books. All I could do is look at a computer screen for the whole class period. After these two weeks, both of these types of educations had their advantages and disadvantages. In my opinion, I liked technology-free week better than technology week; however I do think technology week was easier. I say this because when I was in elementary and middle school, we practically wrote out everything no matter what subject it was. Writing out by hand better affects brain development(Ramirez). I also don’t like the idea of staring at a computer screen all day because I know that it is not healthy and I could be doing better things. Staring at screens may...
