Pillow Forts
Our flashlights shimmer and shine under the cloak of my bed sheets. We look at the cotton walls, our hands weaving a tale through shadow figures. In a faux British accent with an ungodly stutter, my voice bounces off the walls. The velvet cushions from the love seat surround us like a fortress.
As she sprawls across the floor, she declares, “When I am older, I am going to live in a pillow fort. Who would not want to live in a pillow fort?” We giggle and laugh, as she makes funny faces in the little pocket mirror she always carries with her.
Aunty calls for us, telling us it’s time for bed. I remind her to leave one light on because Angie doesn’t like the dark. We slink underneath the sleeping bag. Little Tin Army Men Little fingers pry open a small, wooden, toybox. He shakes with glee as he takes out a leather pouch containing his army men. He places them on the floor, pretending to be a great war hero. His older brothers are off in France somewhere, his mother tells him. He asked mummy before why can’t he go on holiday with them. She only replied, “You do not want to visit where they are, sweetums.”
He lines up the little, tin, army men. Pretending they are Stewart, William, and George. His older brothers are always so fun. They give him piggy back rides and tell him funny jokes. He wonders why his older brothers aren't home.
Mummy calls him for supper, he pretends he did not hear her. He just wants to play with his army men for a bit longer. His mother walks in, as a fort is blown up. He knocks down all the army men and giggles. She yells at him to put those away, his mummy looks sort of sad, he does not understand why she is so mad. He leaves to wash his face before
