...Critical Thinking and a Democratic Society The definition of an informed citizen is having sufficient and sufficiently reliable information or knowledge to be able to understand a subject or situation and make appropriate judgments or decisions regarding it. Meaning, to understand something fully you need to be properly informed. You cannot make an educated guess on most problems or issues. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the concept of Critical thinking and Creative thinking in a Democratic Society .The requirements to become a better critical thinker stems from a realization that complexity, uncertainty, and ambiguity of a person characteristic of their current environment. Most of the material about critical thinking derives from philosophy, education, and psychology. There are, however, competing schools of thought on what critical thinking is and how to best develop it. In most cases a multidisciplinary assessment of a topic leads to a richer body of research, however, in the case of critical thinking it seems to have led to competing and incomplete views of the topic. Critical thinking is the use of those cognitive skills or strategies that increase the probability of a desirable outcome. It is used to describe thinking that is purposeful, reasoned, and goal directed. Critical thinking is a purposeful, directed thought. It is not easy, as it requires explicit mental energy. The great majority of the decisions and issues we face throughout the day do not...

Hal Cone is a black theologian and Cornel West is a philosopher. This paper will focus on each individual’s unique contributions to society, ideas used to solve a specific issue, how the ideas were applied, personal and political background, creative thinking process, and a critique of their thoughts. From religion, oppression, educational segregation, and the Civil Rights movement, Hal Cone and Cornel West made a remarkable amount of progressive contributions to society. The contributions made by Hal Cone and Cornel West are often over-looked by today’s youth. Black American youth and young adults in particular have become somewhat distant form Black history because the way things appears in today’s society. What is overlooked, and should often be recapped is; without the endurance and dedication within the creative minds of these two creative thinkers, it’s possible that oppression and segregation would still remain a part of our society. Many Civil Rights leaders are responsible for the equality growth in our culture, and Hal Cone and Cornel West has been influential in ensuring Blacks continued to advance in America’s society. Cause and effect beliefs-cause and effects belief are cognitions linking specific alternatives to specific criteria. These are often referred to as models, theories, assumptions, beliefs, or alternative attributes. Platoon Hierarchy is needed to understand how certain decisions ca affect many areas and how critical thinking is needed and used by all involved in the military. ...` Critical Thinking Reflection Paper David Garrett Hum/115 Michelle Cooper 2/3/16 Part 1 There are many ways to reduce poverty in America, but I believe the very first step we must take is to change our thinking and how we interpret the phrase “people living in poverty” and those who are “homeless”. We need to realize that poverty and homelessness occurs for more than those who are out of job and those who are addicts. We must use deep thinking to see that poverty can occur from a unplanned illness or surgery and when the medical bills start piling up, then those individuals begin to lose everything. We can reduce poverty and homelessness in America by looking at the root causes of each. We can reduce it by being “far sighted” and looking at long term solutions for poverty stricken people such as job creation and training programs. Job retention programs can also be created with incentives to work. When we consider all of our possibilities we are then engaging in critical thinking to reduce poverty and homelessness. Part 2 I think there are basic principles for critical thinking that can always be applied the some way. In critical thinking, you are always striving for the best, not perfect solution. As I mentioned above, in reducing the number of those who live in poverty starts with us looking at the true reasons why someone is living in poverty and not just our perception or what society tells us. Society tells us that those who are homeless and living...

...The dictionary defines critical thinking as a “disciplined thinking that is clear, rational, open-minded, and informed by evidence.” So, we must ask ourselves how we obtain critical thinking. Are there steps that one must take? Is there only one-way to reach critical thinking? Is this something that can be taught to another person or explained? Do ethics and critical thinking ever intertwine? With so many questions revolving around this subject, I am going to use the rest of this paper to delve into the hard questions. We are going to explore the steps of the critical thinking process in detail while applying those steps to my personal blind spot and preference in the ethical lens spectrum and we will discuss the effects of ethics in comparison to professional and societal environments. There are six basic steps to the critical thinking process. Our text, Becoming a Master Student, relies on psychologist Benjamin Bloom to explain the steps. 1) Remembering 2) Understanding 3) Applying 4) Analyzing 5) Evaluating 6) Creating. (Ellis, 1976, p. 205). As we start to form the initial research behind the idea or paper these steps become very important in narrowing the field of vision and applying these thoughts to real life. We need to remember what we are reading or researching. I personally struggle with remembering some of the small details. I can get lost in the big picture of the project. We then need to understand what we are reading; the best way to...

Defining Critical and Creative thinking Critical and creative thinking is described as a process, which an individual’s mind is capable of remembering experiences as well as being able to make rational decisions. The thinking process also employs one’s mind rationally and objectively in evaluating or deciding within a given situation, and this requires skilled work. According to Pros and Cons Controversial Issue (2009), it is impossible for an individual to a have a rational ability to think clearly and logically without learning how, or without practicing (paragraph.2). The ability to master critical thinking involves life experiences, which an individual is put into a situation that allows critical and creative thought to place. Describing a situation with critical and creative thought One situation that involves using critical and creative thought is the increasing population of cities. ...Critical and Creative Thinking in Society Short Essays PHL/458 December 1, 201X XXX Introduction Critical and creative thinking are an important part of everyday life. First, this paper will describe a situation of public interest in which these could have been used for a better outcome. Next, it will define free will, truth, knowledge and opinion, how they are used to form thoughts and the role they play in critically assessing situations. It will also identify three hindrances to the critical thinking process with an experience. Lastly, it will identify a message in advertising, how it was perceived, and the reality of the advertisement and distinguish between perception and the reality of the message. Situation of Public Interest The current situation of public interest that will be discussed is the selling of swastika ridden wrapping paper by Walgreens. Walgreens was carrying the wrapping paper in celebration of Hanukkah when customers started to notice the swastikas. This is clearly offensive to the Jewish community who would be purchasing the wrapping paper. As a result the product has been pulled from the shelves (Huffington Post, 2014). This situation could have been avoided if a quality assurance individual or product reviewer was consulted. It is those individuals job to review the product and gage how consumers will perceive the product. The review process should include a checklist with critical thinking questions one it. One example would be...

...Personal Refection Paper At this point after studying the text book definition of critical thinking. If I have to categorize myself as a beginning thinker. Where, unlike a challenged thinker I don’t necessarily and major flaws in my thought process I am indeed taking time and effort to improve my critical thinking skills. In my personal opinion is not only disipline and rational but also it’s clear concise and in every instance is backed with evidence. It also needs to be simplistic enough for anyone to participate in it, yet regimented and rational enough to promote intellectual growth. For where would the world of fine art be without thinker such as Plato and Socrates? Where would today’s perception of western religion be without critical thinkers such as Aquines? The most important thing I’ve come to learn about critical thinking is that without it we would have been robbed of this world’s greatest philosophers. Second by extension historically individual critical thinkers always have had a certain amount influence when it comes to social norms. Some of the more popular ones have their own principles that have been applied to movement and religions. Individuals like Lenin and Karl Marx heavily inspired the communist movement, while the Nazi party was heavily inspired by the works of Friedrich Nietzsche. For all we know the events of World War II could have played out completely different if these philosophers (also known as critical thinkers) were never born?! Who’s to say...

...Critical Thinking RaNetta Ashley GT05BSB15 June 10, 2015 Diane Hurley Critical Thinking Dictionary.com defines critical thinking as “disciplined thinking that is clear, rational, open-minded, and informed by evidence” (2015). The idea of critical thinking is mostly about the ability to objectively analyze a situation or issue so that one is able to make a clear, rational judgement. It is a process everyone uses, or should be able to use, for anything from which toilet paper to buy to how they select a life-mate or spouse. Steps in the Critical Thinking Process According to Becoming a Master Thinker, the basis for the critical thinking process for students is “They distinguish between opinion and fact. They ask probing questions and make detailed observations. They uncover assumptions and define their terms. They make assertions carefully, basing them on sound logic and solid evidence. Almost everything that we call knowledge is a result of these activities. This means that critical thinking and learning are intimately linked.” (2014, p. 204) Making a proper judgement through critical thinking is mostly just asking the right questions (who, what, when, where, why, and how?) and finding evidence to either support or argue against whatever information or situation is under consideration. Ethical Lens Inventory In having completed the Ethical Lens Inventory, I received the analysis of “Autonomy and Rationality/Sensibility” with the description of “you balance your personal skills...
