PRESUMERS & CUSTOWNERS “Consumers will embrace even more ways to participate in the funding and (pre-)launch of new products and brands.” 2013 will see passionate consumers embrace two innovative new ‘consumption’ models: becoming PRESUMERS and CUSTOWNERS. PRESUMERS love to get involved with, push, fund, and promote products and services before they are realized. And thanks to countless new crowdfunding platforms and new manufacturing technologies that are finally tipping into the mainstream (and a burgeoning, global cult of entrepreneurialism at large), the coming 12 months will see them have more opportunities than ever to do so. No wonder that the amount PRESUMERS spent on crowdfunding platforms has risen from just USD 530 million in...

...Tech outlook for 2016 December 29, 2015 by Los Angeles Times Gear VR Virtual reality, connected cars, e-sports, the on-demand economy - all are becoming important elements in the Southland economy, and all are poised for rapid growth in 2016 - along with some challenges. And then there's Snapchat Inc., based in Venice, and one of the most highly valued companies currently competing in the latest venture-capital-juiced start-up cycle, which many believe is way overheated. SNAPCHAT The popular disappearing chat and video app needs to create predictability for investors to increase the odds of going public at a valuation exceeding the $16 billion at which it's supposedly valued. That includes steady growth in sales. More time spent on Snapchat means more ad revenue for the company. So a string of new features will certainly be added in 2016. Some possible new additions: Group chats: Snapchat users must individually select message recipients. Snapchat Chief Executive Evan Spiegel has said eschewing group messaging was intended to make people think deeply about who they are sharing their lives with. But he's got to keep users thirsting for group chats happy, so expect some streamlined sharing. Changing tunes: Spiegel is big on music, and has a long-stated interest in helping aspiring musicians and artists. How that translates into chat features is unclear, but expect Snapchat to introduce at least one big thing around sounds. For one, Spiegel can't ignore the smashing success...

...1. GSM Nation LLC Seattle, Washington Founded: 2010 What it is: Through its e-commerce platform, GSM Nation offers a wide selection of smart-phones, tablets and other wireless accessories. The company not only sells the physical device but offers a no-contract wireless service plan for consumers who don't want to be locked into long-term agreements. Besides BtoC, GSM Nation offers solutions for organizations ranging from the government agencies to Fortune 500 companies. How it started: When Ahmed Khattak arrived to the U.S. from Pakistan, the first thought was to call his parents to let them know he was safe. Yet, when he went to buy a phone he was shocked he couldn’t afford to buy one without committing to a two-year contract. Plus, he didn’t he even qualify, because he lacked a Social Security number or credit history. It was that moment he decided he'd find a way to help customers in the U.S. enjoy the benefits similar to the international community, where phones are unlocked and mobile plans are available contract-free. GSM Nation was soon born out of a Yale incubator. Why it's a winner: With expectations it will hit $100 million in revenue in 2013 -- only three years after launch -- GSM Nation is a winner in our books. Plus, it is helping consumers save thousands of dollars and offers some individuals, who may not have otherwise qualified for a wireless device, the chance to own one. 2. It negatively impacted global financial markets, led to the collapse of major financial institutions, the nationalisation of banks and caused a deep global recession. From its beginnings in the United States, networked financial institutions quickly led to international contagion and the European sovereign debt crisis. In response, the G20 officially endorsed Basel III – a new global standard to reduce systemic risk through stronger capital bases designed to act as a buffer during periods of financial instability and avoid bailouts. Sustained European government efforts to reduce debt through austerity have largely failed, and focus is now shifting to growth strategies. Entrepreneurial start-ups are a key route to driving long-term sustainable growth, but have been hit hard by sluggish consumer demand, tightening credit and scarce, expensive capital. This report discussed some of the implications for both...
