In Chapter 11 and 12 of our text illustrates the need for schools and teachers to connect with families and English Language Learners. “The Southwest Educational Development Laboratory found compelling, research-based evidence that when schools and families work together, student achievement spikes, particularly in low-performing schools’’(Syrja 81). This presentation is based on what I would like parents to know when partnering with me as a teacher. I will design three activities parents can do to help me in educating their child. The point of these activities is to help me know more about their culture, so that I can be more effective within the classroom with their child. “Integrating family participation, through family at-home learning activities, classroom participatory visits and school volunteerism, allows you to support children’s family relationships and healthy development”(Siegler & Alibali, 2005) Firstly, it is not always easy when trying to get a parent to partner with the teacher when educating the student. Parents of different cultures and ethnicities sometimes shy away from schools because they may fear school officials may judge their citizenship or judge them because of where they come from. Therefore, it would be very important to me to make an honest assessment family outreach by “ensuring that parents and families know that the role of the school is to educate their children, not to play a role in law or immigration enforcement”(Syrja, pg 82, 2010). After ensuring that the parents feel safe as well, I would inform them of my purpose of these activities and how these would help me with their child as well as getting to know their families. ...Diversity is an important part of education but in my community diversity rarely exists. The lack of avenues to open the community up to diversity is precisely why students aren't educated in diversity here. We are a small redneck town (which I wouldn't change for the world) that just isn't exposed to other cultures and ethnicities. The only way that students are exposed to diversity, in a cultural sense, is if they have the ability to travel or communicate with other cultures via the internet, Skype, Facebook, etc. Some kids are extremely diverse but their education in diversity is not a result of their schooling, it is a result of their travels, exposure and friendships to people of other countries and regions.
