To begin, the cycle of violence is an unfortunate situation that results in a lot of pain and suffering for many. Personally, I believe that the cycle of violence is an awful situation, but I understand why it continues to happen. For example, in an abusive family household, children in that household who are abused at a young age will start to believe that behavior is normal and therefore they will repeat the same abuse to their children. They will have the mentality that “if I have to go through it, so do you”. For example, I read the novel A Child Called It and David’s mother was extremely abusive, However, it is mentioned that she grew up in an abusive household as well. She was angry and still had rage full emotions bottled up inside of her, therefore she continued the cycle of violence. …show more content…
I understand why parents continued the cycle of violence; they might grow up thinking that behavior is normal, they might have been emotionally numb through the whole situation and since they bottled that emotion up throughout the whole abusive situation, having a child of their own may bring flashbacks and additionally a chance to explode and release all those negative emotions they have been holding in, or they might just feel ashamed that they had to put up with abuse, and want to take that shame and anger out on a venerable target, which would be a child. However, even though I can understand why, I still believe that it is unacceptable and that there is no excuse to abuse a child, or anyone for that matter. It is not the child’s, girlfriend’s or anyone’s fault that you were abused. I am glad that abuse is now being taken seriously, instead of being swept under the rug. It is important to protect everyone and make sure that there are resources out there to help victims and

...Social Development Research [pic] The reason that I choose this particular topic is because of several reasons. One: it reminds me of my childhood and two: it kind of helps me see- not so much understand- why I present some of the same behaviors in my adulthood life. I remember my mother and her boyfriend’s fighting in the home all the time- weather it be mental abuse, physical abuse or just verbal abuse. When this occurred I remember crying and saying to myself that this behavior would be on that I would never expose my children or anyone else’s children to. In reality I guess the saying “you’re a product of your environment” has some truth behind it. Another reason that I chose this topic “Cycle of violence” is because I can also recall my grandmother always saying- when things happened- that our family needed to break the cycle. I never knew what she was referring to until I reached adulthood and seen myself doing things that were a cycle in our family history. If I had to write a research paper on this chosen topic, I would use this article because I see it as being a relevant and also very credible source. I would also find more background information on this topic by searching other sources just to prove the point I am trying to make. I would then try to locate surveys that help in proving this “cycle of violence” philosophy as well. On top of all the research I find on this topic I could also use first hand experiences- like myself- and...

Lasa 2: Cultural Considerations

...between the ages of 9 and 13, boys and girls. They were rescued from a refugee camp in Nigeria where conditions were very poor. People were cramped and slept in rudimentary shelters. Food was scarce, and disease was rampant. Prior to arriving in the camp, the children were exposed to brutal violence. They saw their families murdered, houses burned, and witnessed or experienced sexual assault. Some were also injured in the attacks on their villages. Utilize the Culturegrams database in the Argosy Online library, the Ethics and Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct (2010), and your readings to write a paper addressing the following: Describe the psychological effects of violence that the children from Nigeria might be experiencing? Be sure to consider issues such as gender and age. Design an intervention program to address the children’s exposure to violence. Remember to consider individual, family, and community needs. Describe the elements you would incorporate into a prevention program designed to foster resilience in the children from Nigeria, as well as break the cycle of violence that we learned can occur for children exposed to violence. You may research existing programs that utilize best practices as we have learned in this course, or design your own program. Reflect on the debate between “cultural universality” and “cultural specificity”. How would you reconcile this debate within the context of the ethics code for psychologists? ...

...United States Department of Justice 60 percent of children, 17 years old and younger, were exposed to violence within the past year either directly or indirectly. Children’s exposure to violence, whether as victims or witnesses, is often associated with long-term physical, psychological, and emotional harm. Children exposed to violence are also at a higher risk of engaging in criminal behavior later in life and becoming part of a cycle of violence. Children exposed to violence are more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol; suffer from depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic disorders; fail or have difficulty in school, and become delinquent and engage in criminal behavior. Sixty percent of American children were exposed to violence, crime, or abuse in their homes, schools, and communities. Almost 40 percent of American children were direct victims of two or more violent acts, and one in ten were victims of violence five or more times. Children are more likely to be exposed to violence and crime than adults. Almost one in ten American children saw one family member assault another family member, and more than 25 percent had been exposed to family violence during their life. A child’s exposure to one type of violence increases the likelihood that the child will be exposed to other types of violence and exposed multiple times.( “According to United State Department of Justice”) Violence causes a lot of physical damage to a child’s body. Children become stressed. Stress is neutral. It...

Violence Against Women

...Domestic Violence/Abuse against Women Violence against women is a major issue around the world. A large part of that violence comes in the form of domestic violence/abuse. Domestic violence and violence against women as a whole are hard situations to define, Flowers explains how our definition of domestic violence is changing with our understanding: “With advances in understanding relationships and effect of behavior, the definition of the battered woman has broadened in recent years. The term now reflects not only physical abuse but also psychological and emotional abuse, thus indicating woman can be victimized by their mates in many ways” (Flowers, 1996). The Definition of domestic violence against women is a changing thing depending on what studies or journals you read. This leads to many different definitions, each created for their own studies and journals. Thus, we find inconsistencies in the data put out by domestic violence studies, some studies claiming 12 month prevalence ratings of 2.1% for woman while others claim 28% for total abuse against women and men (Hegarty and Roberts, 1998). We need a competent definition of domestic violence against women. In this paper I will give you what I think to be the most competent definition of domestic violence against woman and compare its rates to others. I found what I believe to be the most competent domestic violence/abuse definition in a study done by Hegaty and Roberts in 1998. The study was comprised of many other...

Article Review- Media Effects on Behavior

...Critique of Cashmore, Jordan. 2014. “The ‘Fear of Crime-Media Feedback’ Cycle” Internet Journal of Criminology © 2014 ISSN 2045 6743 (Online) Thesis Reporting on violent crimes in the media is often described as fear mongering. Every day you turn on the local and national news and are bombarded with images of the violent crimes that are taking place in our cities, states and country, this increases the public’s fear of being victimized and creates a sense of impending violence. This article attempts to prove that the reporting on violent crime in the media in regards to levels of violence in our communities is actually beneficial in protecting the public by creating a: ‘Fear of Crime-Media Feedback Model’, whereby the media influences levels of fear in its audience and affects their routine activity, thereby affecting their exposure to potentially victimizing situations by encouraging avoidance behavior; influencing people to remain in their home as opposed to venturing onto the streets. The researcher believes that with further research, the model could be used to reduce the victimization risk to the public by using media reporting to influence the public’s behavior. Methods While the researcher did not conduct his own data gathering research, he did utilize research work that had been done in on this subject to support his thesis. The subject matter of these works include; the introduction of the ‘fear of Crime-Media Feedback model, violent crime and...

How Teen Mothers Describe Dating Violence

...How Teen Mothers Describe dating Violence Abstract This paper will examine Teen Dating Violence (TDV) from the perspective of pregnant teenagers and teenage mothers. TDV is recognized as a major current public health issue threatening youth and is even more prevalence during pregnancy and parenting (Herman, 2013). The task of parenting and the stress that comes with pregnancy are two psychological issues that are beyond the capabilities of the adolescent’s period. Dealing with these stressors often leads to TDV with adolescent parents. Throughout this paper I will discuss the viewpoints of selected teen mothers and pregnant teens, their thoughts on the causes, and their suggestions on how to stop or reduce TDV. The method used to collect the data will also be analyzed, the research limitations will be discussed, and the impacts of the research result on the nursing profession will be elaborated. Teenagers have the most understanding of their age group; therefore, the thoughts and experiences of young mothers will be useful in the development prevention strategies specific to their needs (Herman, 2013) Key words: teen dating violence, pregnant and parenting teens, interpersonal violence TDV can be defined as any negative use of power or control in teenage relationships. Development tasks of the adolescent period, hurdles for all adolescents, are even more complex when teens confront pregnancy and parenting and may predispose them to violent relationships (Herman, 2013)...

Come Clean’s vision is stop the cycle of violence in the community. The company’s motto is that “when life gets a little dirty you have to Come Clean” (Come Clean, 2015). The slogan is clever in that it has a metaphorical and literal meaning. Come Clean offers a wide range of products essential to every household. Come Clean is a 501C3, however it relies on the revenue from selling products to create and offer programs to empower and drive positive changes designed to stop the cycle of violence in the local community of Lithonia, Georgia. This makes Come Clean a unique, niche company because it has a small segment of a market suitable for focused attention and it provides services not offered addressed by its immediate competitors. This paper will assess how Come Clean Inc. uses social media as a strategy for marketing and communications and will analyze the implications of the Internet and social media for the future as internet use is growing. ...Control theories make a little more sense to me. Reckless' containment theory says there are predispositions that make people commit crimes. He uses the terms pushes and pulls. Pushes can come from troubled psyches, or stressful circumstances outside the individual, whereas pulls can be from family, friends, etc. His point is however that these pushes and pulls are not evenly distributed between society. He recognizes these pushes and pulls but says there is more needed to completely explain. Not all youths in socially disorganized areas that are exposed to these pushes or pulls commit crimes. Hence the factor of control. He studied inner and outer containement. Inner involves a strong conscience, conventional beliefs, commitment to goals, etc. Outer containment is an array of forces that limit exposure to criminal pushes and pulls. I like this theory a lot. I think it's hard to test, because we're talking about a lot of inner questions like morals and goals. He recognizes the "pushes and pulls which can explain a lot of crime, but not all. Then he factors in these containment factors which push the theory further. I think it's very valid and important to study these types of factors, but at the same time I think it's hard to study it. All in all, I like this theory and I think it makes a lot of sense. Hirschi's a bit different with the social bond theory. He didn't attempt to explain why individuals engage in criminal acts, but rather why individuals choose to conform to conventional...

Criminology Domestic Violence

...Research Project Criminal Justice Justin Robinson November 8, 2015 Domestic Violence is a major problem all around the world not just the United States, when people think of domestic violence many think it is 100% men against women physically, but there are many different types of domestic violence, and it’s not always men physically abusing women. This source gives mainly statistics which is helpful to create a baseline of how much violence goes on against spouses along with children and gives substantial information regarding the subject. http://domesticviolencestatistics.org/domestic-violence-statistics/ Like I mentioned above when people think about domestic violence many people think it is always men abusing women, it’s not always the case however. Men get abused almost just as much as women, sometimes physical and more than likely emotional. Many men are sometimes mentally overpowered by women who are controlling ie:money, what the man can do, demanding monetary objects etc., which is mainly what I believe this source touches on pretty heavily.
