...United States of America underwent large scale change and by the start of the twentieth century was one of the richest nations in the world. By 1950 the U.S.A. was the richest country in the world and a superpower. The state was not the only thing to change during this period. From the late-nineteenth century up to the 1920s average Americans experienced a dramatic expansion in wealth and prosperity. However, with the Wall Street Crash in 1929 the U.S.A. experienced an economic depression that destroyed millions of livelihoods. This eventful period of American history led many to question the American Dreams place in modern America. This research paper will examine the interpretation of the American Dream in literature between the Progressive Era at the start of the twentieth century and the 1950s economic and social boom. In order to do this the paper will examine the novels The Jungle, The Great Gatsby and Death of a Salesman. These three novels all examine the American Dream in different decades. Written in 1906 by Upton Sinclair The Jungle is a novel that portrayed the life of immigrants and the working class in early-twentieth century America. The novel was published during the muckraking decade and its depiction of poverty, unpleasant living and working conditions and the corruption of those in power led it to be called “the Uncle Tom’s Cabin of wage slavery.” A socialist Sinclair believed that by the start of the twentieth...

Okey LBST 499 9 March 2012 "An illegitimate walk in the woods to remember" In this paper I am going to discuss the various controversial issues pertaining the two sources I read titled Crimes Against Nature and A walk in the woods. I will be discussing and diagnosing the transformation of landscapes and communities within Appalachia from an ecological, economic, and geographic view points. In correlation with the different systems and properties practiced by the communities within Appalachia, I will delve deeper into the more specific subcategories with the intention of making the information easier to understand. The primary ecological impacts that will be addressed are exploitists, mountaintop removal and its repercussions, annihilation of wildlife and endangered species, and the destruction of the surrounding natural environments driven by human goals. On the economic side of things the primary topics of discussion will be income, living conditions, isolationism, homogeneity, maximization of overall utility, timber and natural resources exploitation without resilience. Geographic view points, the final topic of discussion will pertain to environmental monitoring systems, human habitation, evolving spatial patterns, and the outcome of relative location isolation. A major issue behind the driving force of Appalachia's ecological impacts starts with the exploitation of natural resources. Timber is one of the primary resources Appalachia has to...

...In 1911, Dr. Hamilton Wright, the United States Opium Commissioner, at the time, stated that “of all the nations… the United States [consumed] most habit-forming drugs per capita.”1 This branded America as a drug lord, and future generations would continue to uphold the atrocious title and reputation, demonstrating that the United States’ drug control system was poorly enforced during the 1900’s. Neglectful physicians, contraband traces in food and medicine, utter ignorance in part of the American government, and social retaliation led to America becoming a leader in illicit substance distribution and use. One would think that medical professionals should be dedicated to ensuring patient health and safety, but history reveals ethical mishaps and disappointing facts dictating quite the contrary. Heroin, a substance extracted from the seed pod of certain poppy plants,2 was once a primary component for medications that treated cough-inducing illnesses. Bayer, a major pharmaceutical company, widely advertised heroin and its concoctions, such as heroinhydrochloride, to the general public. It was claimed as, “the cheapest specific for the relief of coughs,” which would appeal to any customer (see page 11, Figure 1). However, heroin is derived from morphine, which is highly addictive and even toxic in large quantities. Morphine caused crisis among civil war veterans, who became dangerously addicted to the pain reliever.3 Even with these previous events in mind...

...------------------------------------------------- Corporate governance literature review Prepared by: Zainab Ashfaq (4525819) Unit Code: BGP8022 CEO DUALITY-THE COMBINATION OF CHAIRMAN AND CEO ROLES A literature review of different theories and empirical research about CEO Duality. INTRODUCTION Recent financial scandals like Enron, Mobily and WorldCom arise a demand for a better monitoring and controlling structure within the organizations. Conflict of interest between the shareholders and the managers is an on going debate in the literature of corporate governance. In this situation, the board of directors is supposed to be a critical mechanism in supervising the actions of management. Researchers of corporate governance field are well motivated to study about the numerous features of the board of directors based on different theoretical backgrounds. Agency theory and the stewardship theory has been widely used as a theoretical framework by many of these studies. Concerning the board of directors, a developing area of research is whether the CEO and board Chairman roles are split or not to be split (Dey, Ellen and Liu 2011). Agency theory proponent claims that in the best interests of shareholders it is necessary to have a separate Chairman of board and CEO (Nicholson and Kiel 2007). On the contrary, stewardship theory supporters believe in the concept of CEO duality in which the role of CEO and board chair is performed by one...

...Purpose – To assist colleagues in tying current ideas to previously established practices. To generate discussion of the current relevance of students’ understanding management history. Design/methodology/approach – A review of representative classic theorists with an eye toward matching their behavior to that of current newsmakers. This is presented in a model to insure that like areas are compared. Findings – The past is in the present. Although we may live in the day of “enlightened” “collaborative” management; there are still successful people who operate differently. Practical implications – Readers of the paper will be able to make immediate application of the model. Originality/value – Even presentation of the obvious has value. The model format is a dynamic document that others can use and improve upon. Keywords Management history, Management theory Paper type General review ˆ Plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose. ...Target Financial Reporting Quality and M&A Deals that Go Bust* HOLLIS A. SKAIFE, University of Wisconsin–Madison DANIEL D. WANGERIN, Michigan State University 1. Introduction This study investigates whether target firms’ financial reporting quality affects the likelihood that merger and acquisition (M&A) deals will ultimately be terminated. Managers looking to increase their market share, enter new markets, or diversify their operations will consider acquiring another company based on the company’s performance, geographic locations, and lines of business, respectively. If the potential target is a U.S. publicly traded company, an acquirer’s initial assessment of the expected benefits associated with the acquisition of the company is based on publicly available information. Generally, the acquirer obtains limited private information from the target prior to the signing of the acquisition agreement. Although an acquisition agreement creates a binding contractual obligation for both entities to go forward with the deal, it does not guarantee completion of the deal. The acquisition agreement typically contains a warranty by the target that its financial statements are prepared in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). If this warranty is breached, the deal can be terminated. We hypothesize that low-quality financial reporting by target firms prior to the announcement of a deal increases the likelihood that a target firm’s U.S. GAAP warranties stated in the acquisition...
