...Talon is a boy who lives in New York, but not where you would think. In this fiction novel by Neal Shusterman, The Downsiders, there are two types of people. The topsiders, who live in New York, and the downsiders who live under New York. In caves and tunnels forged by topsiders decades ago. Talon, the main character, is among the downsiders. However, he has always had an extreme curiosity for the topside, even though others frown upon that. He could be described as curious, independent, and daring. While many of the ‘downsiders’ usually enjoy being underground, Talon uses every chance he can to get a glimpse of the topside. It is because of this that he can be described as curious. While he was on his ‘catching’ rotation, where downsiders find topsiders who no longer want to live on the topside, he found three fallers with his two friends. After the catch he insisted that they should go and look at the topside before they went back underground. On page thirteen it is stated that, “Talon led his friend up to a sidewalk grate… they could see the soles of shoes hurrying past, on their way to whatever things those strange surface folk did.” This shows how Talon leads his friends to look, even if they do not agree with his curiosity to the world above....

...He was completely worn out inside himself between identities and was caught within his own philosophical thoughts so intensely that the motivation to live his life had vanished. Raskolnikov had quit school, stopped working, and isolated himself in his apartment to flounder in his own grief. From the very first page of the novel Raskolnikov had already been experiencing a crisis and depression. Raskolnikov had been experiencing a crisis long before the murders took place. He killed Alyona and her younger sister, Lizaveta, because he greatly desired to do something with his life. Raskolnikov said, “I … I wanted to have the daring … and I killed her. ...Today’s organizations can benefit greatly from encouraging a strong entrepreneurial orientation within their business. Oftentimes a large corporation can lose sight of the strong competitive drive that entrepreneurial business people possess. There are a few basic methods that all businesses should follow to promote opportunities: independent action, innovation, competitive aggressiveness, and risk taking. Independent action encourages employees within an organization to create ideas and implement changes if possible. These changes will then hopefully lead to new products or new profit capabilities. In addition, being able to act independently encourages employees to seek opportunities for improvement because it allows them to receive the recognition personally. Innovation itself is the building block for entrepreneurial success. It takes innovation to create something of value from opportunity. This is accomplished by being willing to try new ideas and test new theories. Competitive aggressiveness is necessary in the marketplace. Competition is what pushes a company to become better than its rivals and increase their market share. Competitive aggressiveness pushes a company to find weakness in other companies, and exploit those weaknesses for an advantage. Without competition, employees and companies become complacent and are often overtaken in the market by more aggressive companies. Risk taking requires some sort of investment on the part of the company, either in labor...

...used in the fine arts. Less than fifty years later, brave was being used in plays written by Shakespeare and many other English playwrights. Once again though, the meaning of the word had changed and was no longer intended to be used when challenging or threatening somebody. First seen in Shakespeare’s play Henry VI, the word’s definition had once again evolved and was now being used as an adjective. At this point in time, the use of brave had completely changed and was used to describe a person who was courageous, daring, or intrepid (Photo 1). Although there are many rules in every language, it is still constantly changing. The way that the use of brave has changed over the last five hundred years is just one small example of how much language can change over a large period of time. There is no way to tell when or how the use of a word is going to change, but when the use of a word does change, it is usually due to the use of slang. The use of slang varies greatly throughout the use of language. The use of slang is so different...

...African American The African American did not arrive in America through the traditional ways of immigration, but instead were forced to leave their homeland by African slave traders. African Slave traders sold African American to American Southerners to work as slave on their plantations. After hundreds of years of being owned by white Americans, the African American was finally given their freedom. Unfortunately, after being released from human slavery and bondage, African Americans had to endure many years of poor treatment and discrimination by members of the American public. After the legislation that was enacted forbidding and punishing discriminatory behavior in society, African Americans were finally able to see a light at the end of the tunnel. Although human equality is still a tremendous work in progress in our society today, after years of decrementing struggles and tribulations, the African American is finally treated like an equal citizen in society. The adverse reality that African Americans did not have the equal right and opportunity to live their lives as free men and women, has set a staggering mark in American history. African Americans were bought and sold like cattle and never looked at as humans but rather property. The laws were designed to benefit the White American and the slave owner and did not recognize the slave as a citizen. Although slavery was made illegal in the Northern regions in 1787, it was not until 1808 before slavery was outlawed...

Figure 1 Steve Jobs and the most recent Iphone 4 in white Source: Yohe 2010 1.2 Industrial environment introduction As claimed by Hill and Jones (2008, p.100) that for the last 20 years, fast growth of the power of the computer has greatly attributed to the high extent of innovation and a turbulent environment in the personal computer industry. There are a number of players and potential entrants in the industry that drive up the competition and such fierce competition again is enhanced by the fast technological innovation resulting in the fact that no single company, no matter how large and power it is once, could maintain absolute competitive advantage for a long time. For example, in the 1980s Apple Computer manage to build up a competitive advantage based on the combination of a proprietary disk operating system and an intangible product image but such competitive advantage was lost to Microsoft when the similar system, Microsoft’s Windows operating system with many similar...

...The first gallant adventurers of the New World were daring Spaniards. Fueled by the desire of adventure and riches, Spanish explorers and conquistadors spread throughout the newly discovered Americas like wildfire. It all started in 1492 when the Niña, Pinta, and Santa Maria shattered through the glass gateway of the Atlantic, which had previously isolated two worlds of people, cultures, and ideas. Christopher Columbus, a Portuguese sailor with a dream of finding an alternate route to India, came to the King and Queen of Spain, Ferdinand and Isabella. After finishing their Reconquista of Spain from the Moors, the couple heard him. They shared Columbus’s vision so greatly, that they rejected the advice of their own geographers. Columbus’s three vessels anchored on the shores of an island...

...When creativity is used within an organization, innovative and creative performance is encouraged among management and employees. Imagination and creative intelligence is the total reflection of creativity. “Creativity intelligence depicts how the world is perceived through personality, individuality, beliefs, behavior, and character. The desire to accomplish something new, achieve a different outcome, or thought process is the focus of creativity. Creative intelligence consists of four styles: intuitive, innovative, imaginative, and inspirational (Rowe, 2004).” This paper will explore the four styles of creative intelligence and how they influence an organization’s strategic management process. Also, the influence the five forces have over the mental models and mindsets will be evaluated, and examples demonstrating how mental models and mindsets can limit the decision-making process of an organization will be mentioned. Intuitive The intuitive style guides decisions based on previous experiences and the results that occurred from the experiences (Rowe, 2004). Jack Welch, the former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of General Electric was a strong leader that led a company out of near ruin to revitalization. His strategy was to focus on the results and action. He is described as being a tough and charismatic, yet fair leader who believed that the key to a business being successful is people. Welch believed that every person had possibility, and that creativity within...

...great amount of fuel needed to heat the various kettles. Rillieux wanted to improve this process for the better and knew just how. During his time in France, Rillieux had witnessed the introduction of the steam-powered single pan vacuum, this vacuum pan was enclosed in an area with the air removed, this was essential because liquids can boil at lower temperatures when air is not present, thus costing less. Rillieux decided to improve greatly on this efficiency by including a second and later a third pan, with each receiving heat from the pan before. A few years later, Rillieux had obtained a job from Theodore Packwood to help improve his Myrtle Grove Plantation refinery. In doing so he was able to finally use his triple evaporation pan system which he then got patented in 1843. Rillieux's new system took much of the hand labor out of the sugar refining process, it saved fuel because the juice boiled at lower temperatures,...

...An American President A Life in Brief Theodore Roosevelt, who came into office in 1901 and served until 1909, is considered the first modern President because he significantly expanded the influence and power of the executive office. From the Civil War to the turn of the twentieth century, the seat of power in the national government resided in the U.S. Congress. Beginning in the 1880s, the executive branch gradually increased its power. Roosevelt seized on this trend, believing that the President had the right to use all powers except those that were specifically denied him to accomplish his goals. As a result, the President, rather than Congress or the political parties, became the center of the American political arena. As President, Roosevelt challenged the ideas of limited government and individualism. In their stead, he advocated government regulation to achieve social and economic justice. He used executive orders to accomplish his goals, especially in conservation, and waged an aggressive foreign policy. He was also an extremely popular President and the first to use the media to appeal directly to the people, bypassing the political parties and career politicians. Early Life Frail and sickly as a boy, "Teedie" Roosevelt developed a rugged physique as a teenager and became a lifelong advocate of exercise and the "strenuous life." After graduating from Harvard, Roosevelt married Alice Hathaway Lee and studied law at Columbia University. He dropped out after a year to...

...A Report on “Risk Management Analysis in the Mining Industry” Submitted by D Veera Bhadra Anjaneyulu (1226114112) Submitted to Prof Kalpagam Uma Shankar Visiting faculty of Gitam School of International Business Visakhapatnam Introduction The word "risk" comes from the Italian "risicare," meaning "to dare." Developing or acquiring a mine anywhere takes plenty of daring. Undertaking a mining project overseas borders on the foolhardy - unless you understand the risks and take steps to manage those risks. Every business endeavor carries some risk, and the astute businessman, over time, develops a sense of the kinds of risk presented by a business proposition, and a set of strategies designed to deal with those risks. Mining anywhere in the world has its own particular set of risks, in the form of commodity prices, engineering puzzles, and geologic uncertainty. When a company pursues mining on a global scale, additional risks arise, and things like political risk and currency risk come to the fore. Risk can be approached systematically, indeed scientifically, with statistical modeling and sophisticated mathematics. Few businesses make decisions based solely on the inevitability of mathematics, however. At the end of the day, a company must exercise its business judgment, based on its experience, and on what is most important to it, and make the hard decisions about how (or whether) to proceed. 1. Identifying Risks: The Risk Baseline: A mining company should...

His crossing of the Alps is probably one of the most daring military marches in history and to survive it after the weather and attack from tribes loyal to Rome with an army still intact and pretty much ready to fight shows his logistical savvy and the supreme ability to inspire his men to fight on despite the odds. His first battle was Trebbia which he need to win to draw in allies and supplies he won by using the Carthaginian superior cavalry...
