a. BASED ON THE STORY OF DAVID (AS NARRATED IN THE BIBLE TEXTS) RELATE IT TO THE PHRASE “LEADERS ARE MADE NOT BORN”. EXPLAIN THOROUGHLY. Most leaders acquired their leadership ability through academic learning, training and actual experience in life. With these, we can say that leaders are made not born. Even though you have the ability lead, still you need to develop and improve this ability through training and learning with actual experience, with actual encounter in the challenges in life and with interaction to the group you been leading. As with David, his ability was developed thru experience, as a shepherd, his leadership ability was molded with everyday interaction with his father’s goats and sheep. With using his club he make them follow him and obey what he intended to say. And as a leader he also learned how to protect them even facing big animals like lions and bears. b. HOW DID DAVID’S EXPERIENCES (CITE THOSE EXPERIENCES) AS A SHEPHERD CONTRIBUTED TO HIS VICTORY OVER GOLIATH?

David had confidence in his ability because of his past experience fighting lions and bears while guarding his father’s goats and sheep. He used that past experience to fight Goliath. He is so persistent to fight Goliath and insisted that fighting Goliath is no difference with fighting lions and bears. He sighted that when a lion or a bear comes to steal a lamb from the flock; he goes after it with his club and rescues the lamb from its mouth. If the animal turns on him, he catches it by the jaw and clubs it to death. c. HOW DID DAVID’S ATTITUDE: 1) AS A SON, 2) AS A SHEPHERD, AND FAITH IN GOD HELPED HIM MOLD HIS CHARACTER AND LEADERSHIP SKILLS? ANSWER EACH SEPARATELY

As SON – David is so obedient, even as youngest son of his father he never complained that he is the one taking care of their goats and sheep. Having the responsibility at a young age, he

David's Leadership

...replace Saul as king. The prophet Samuel delivered God’s message to David that he would one day be king and rule over God’s people while Saul was still ruling the kingdom (1 Samuel 16:1-13). I believe David had such a prosperous reign as king because he was truly a man of God. David was not a man of great stature and many would look at him as if he had no worth. Regardless of how man felt about David’s ability, God chose him to do great things. Unlike man, God is not concerned with outward appearances as much as he is concerned about the heart (1 Samuel 16:7). Even when times were hard for David and he could not see God’s plan, he did not turn to the Lord and question his life but rather constantly sought council and gave praises. David was truly chosen by Christ from an early age and gained favor from him. God never let David falter even when it may seem like David lost favor in the beginning. David’s many years of being a shepard helped him develop leadership skills necessary to lead God’s people later in life. He learned compassion, bravery, and courage while tending to his sheep. David’s tending to sheep may have seemed irrevalant but God had a greater plan that none knew of. When Saul began to view David as a threat, he began the plot to kill David. Because of the vanity and jealousy of Saul, David was forced...

...model, how would you describe the runners in group 1? What kind of leadership do they want from David, and what kind of leadership does David seem prepared to give them? The runners in Group 1 some runners are novices and don’t have any marathon’s experience at all. According to the SLII model, the group 1 could be categorized as having a low to some competence with a low commitment (D2). It seems like they are expecting from David a type of leadership that requires a high directive and high supportive in his coaching approach. Unfortunately, David doesn’t seem to be prepared to give them that type of leadership as he finds their questions and concerns somewhat annoying. 2. How would describe the fit between the runners in group 2 and David’s coaching style Discuss. Clearly, it’s a total mismatch between what the runners expect from David as a coach, versus what he’s willing and able to do for them. First, the group is looking for David’s coaching approach to be more direct and supportive with all hands on all aspects of their training. In contrast, David seems to be coaching passively, almost like delegating everything to the runners. 3. The experienced runners in group 3 appear to be a challenge to David. Using SLII, explain why David appears ineffective with this group. The approach David is taking with this group is ineffective by itself. Regardless of their experience, David leadership should have been more like a supporting approach (S3). His focus should...

Leadership Theories

...it, "The most undervalued asset in entrepreneurship is determination," and I had finally made the determination to pursue the education necessary to under gird my future business plans. David is not the only successful businessperson I know, but he is the most ethical. Many of the others I grew up with achieved their success by capitalizing on their charisma, their image, or their style. Like my mentor David, however, I knew that I wanted to succeed and be judged based on my character, integrity, and substance. I recognized through my friendship with David that true leadership requires character, and that developing and maintaining character takes grit and persistence. David taught me that gaining success in a capitalistic society is not a right but a responsibility and that it is possible to possess a tough-minded business sense and great humanity simultaneously. During all the years that I witnessed David's ascent in the business world, he never stopped working to achieve success, and I have adopted the same drive. Everyone has dreams, but I have learned to do the groundwork that will make my dreams into realities. I am multilingual, speaking English and Farsi, and I am in the process of learning additional languages-Spanish, Arabic, Hebrew, and German-that will allow me to communicate with an even wider audience. Like David, I do whatever I can to stay at the top and remain competitive, and although life is not perfect, I rarely take "no" for an answer. My optimism and the...

...Laurie Baird Case Studies 7.1 - 7.2 - 7.3 AIS 4081 Leadership Theory and Practice February 13, 2013 Case 7.1 Questions: 1) Based on the principles of path-goal theory, describe why Art and Bob appear to be less effective than Carol? Carol seems to have chosen the style that best fits the needs of her subordinates and the work they are doing. She was described as part parent, part coach and part manufacturing expert. She seemed to display the balance her workers needed. She stresses company goals and the rewards that are available if workers are able to make the grade. The other two managers have their strengths but seem to miss-fire when it comes to management. Art seems to know almost too much regarding parts of the process and seems to be a "know it all" and lets his employees know this. This type of attitude can make people feel inferior. Bob, on the other hand is a very relational type of manager but the workers feel he doesn't understand the job. 2) How does leadership of each of the three supervisors affect the motivation of their respective subordinates? As stated above, Art makes his subordinates feel inferior, Bob makes them feel good - but ineffective and Carol gives the employees ownership of their job and their successes. 3) If you were consulting with Brako about leadership, what changes and recommendations would you make regarding the supervision of Art, Bob, and Carol? I might explore the opportunity for Carol to have a workshop...

Leadership and Management Essay

...CHARTERED MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE DIPLOMA IN MANAGEMENT Leadership Practice Unit 5013 Tony **** 9800******** The commercial world of today moves with an ever increasing pace, leaving businesses to adapt or react quickly to avoid being overtaken or leading to possible failure. For any business to survive and flourish long term they ultimately need a sense of purpose – a raison d’etre, a direction to follow and to know what exactly they stand for. Whilst it is true that often the values, beliefs and vision of a business is generally set in place by the business owners, CEO, MD, board members and alike, it is only when those very same values, beliefs and vision become shared by the workforce, and a culture is born, do they come to life. In this essay we will be establishing views on leadership, management and corporate culture as well as focusing on the men and women that both lead, manage, shape and direct our various global organisations. When asked what managers do, most people would likely say that managers ‘manage things’ like processes and systems, resources and standards. Managers are generally not known for being inspirational, risk taking or having people want to follow them. For a manager to be viewed as a leader, and one that is effective he or she must start to lead more by example, to willingly surrender some of their managerial power by empowering others, and to begin...

Speciality Medical Case

...Specialty Medical Chemicals Case Analysis Special Medical Chemicals is company that has uniquely cornered a niche market in the pharmaceutical industry. The company experienced rapid growth, but has now plateaued. Carl Burke, the newly elected CEO, has been given the task of reigniting the growth engine of the company without undoing the accomplishments of his predecessor. For the first few months, Carl spends time in the field trying to understand the business, its people, and how the organization works. After an unsuccessful attempt to create a “Leadership Team” similar to his former company, Carl decides to hire an outside consultant, Laura Burke, to independently assess the functionality of his management team. Laura provides insight as to the issues of the management team and Carl’s impact on that team. Carl realizes that the company has many strengths. Since its conception, the company has created hundreds of patents for specialty chemicals that allow other drugs to be taken more effectively and conveniently. SMC maintains a strong client base by helping them develop new compounds for their new products. Carl’s biggest concern is how the company is failing to grow within the industry, specifically within biotech and generic drug companies. Other weaknesses lie within the organizational culture where departments are entrenched into their own silos. For example, product development is not responsive to new business. Departments such as sales and manufacturing...

...succeed to be a good leader in “Fresh”, David needs two things. One is good people to work with, and two is the best available product he can get. So, binging the best product they can, preparing the best they can, and serve it. And in order to convey any little things, he needs really capable people who can learn the job and do it well. But the problem is that things happen everyday the way it shouldn’t. Such as people show up late everyday, and people call in sick a lot. That causes problem because there is less people work that day that makes the serving process going slower. As David mentions, referring to concepts from the course and the book, the followers often impact a leader’s success to a great degree. It is an approach to leadership that emphasizes followers’ behaviors, because his followers play an important role in the organization, especially the 120 student employees. Students have schoolwork to do, and they may show up late and call in for...

Christian Worldview on Leadership

...Christian Worldview of Leadership Introduction The Christian worldview of leadership is distinctly different from most secular views on the subject. In the secular, leadership tends to be viewed primarily in terms of a company’s bottom line and how well the leader can urge employees to produce more and better work. That view is profit-centered rather than person-centered, and it does not give much attention to employees’ human needs and qualities nor on how developing excellent work relationships can promote productivity. In the Christian worldview, however, people are key, and their human needs are important. The leader in the Christian worldview understands how meeting employees’ needs promotes the kind of productivity desired and how developing strong work relationships can do more for the company’s success than micromanaging or other forms of harassment can achieve. This paper will discuss the characteristics of a leader and the keys of leadership, group behavior, and conflict management and resolution from the Christian perspective. Leadership Today’s business leaders often have difficult tasks to achieve in turning around failing companies and galvanizing an overworked workforce fearful of losing their jobs, but their tasks do not outweigh those of the great Biblical leaders, such as Moses, who led the Israelites out of bondage, or David, who had to slay the giant before becoming a leader. The characteristics of a leader in the Biblical context still differs...

...5:38 PM Page 302 CHAPTER 13 Ethics and Leadership Effectiveness Joanne B. Ciulla T he moral triumphs and failures of leaders carry a greater weight and volume than those of nonleaders (Ciulla, 2003b). In leadership we see morality magnified, and that is why the study of ethics is fundamental to our understanding of leadership. The study of ethics is about human relationships. It is about what we should do and what we should be like as human beings, as members of a group or society, and in the different roles that we play in life. It is about right and wrong and good and evil. Leadership is a particular type of human relationship. Some hallmarks of this relationship are power and/or influence, vision, obligation, and responsibility. By understanding the ethics of this relationship, we gain a better understanding of leadership, because some of the central issues in ethics are also the central issues of leadership. They include the personal challenges of authenticity, self-interest, and self-discipline, and moral obligations related to justice, duty, competence, and the greatest good. Some of the most perceptive work on leadership and ethics comes from old texts and is out there waiting to be rediscovered and reapplied. History is filled with wisdom and case studies on the morality of leaders and leadership. Ancient scholars from the East and West offer insights that enable us to understand leadership and Author’s Note: A special thanks goes to Jepson...
