Why are you interested in becoming a DC Reads coordinator? *
Limit 5-6 lines

Through DC Reads, I have been able to engage with the Washington, D.C. community, thus exposing to myself to many of the challenges it faces. I would love to lead a group of Georgetown students as they, too, interact with D.C. students and discover how rewarding it can be to be a tutor.

My time spent tutoring through DC Reads has been an eye-opening experience, making me keenly aware of housing and poverty issues that affect childhood development in DC. The stress of living in underserved areas takes an unfair toll on some of the motivated students with whom I work, and so social justice issues are of great importance to me. I hope that as a coordinator, I will introduce a group of students to many of the challenges that the DC community faces as well as show them …show more content…
I am passionate about inspiring my mentees to discover something that they care about, like skating, and guiding them as they work toward their goals. Finding an interest makes children excited to learn and teaches them important lessons about dedication, determination, and hard work. As a figure skating coach, it has always been incredibly rewarding to watch students practice over and over again until they finally master a new skill, leaving a lesson confident and ready to learn more. Similarly, through DC Reads, the smile on a student’s face after he or she successfully reads me a story always reminds me the importance of my work as a mentor. And as a mentor through Georgetown’s peer advisor program, I was able to guide new students as they explored their interests and found their place on the Hilltop. Thus I am confident that my multiple experiences as a mentor will prove to be very valuable as a DC Reads
