Depreciation of Yen

...Quiz 2 Ana Lia Barragán Echenique The effects of an undervalued currency Undervaluation vs. Depreciation Undervaluation and depreciation are often confused; however, they have two very different meanings. Depreciation is defined as the increase or decrease of a currency’s price, in terms of another currency. This happens in the free market due to forces of supply and demand. (Baumol and Blinder). To exemplify this phenomenon, let’s pretend that the supply of US-dollars increases or demand for this currency decreases. The result would be the depreciation of the US-dollar in terms of other currencies like the Euro or the Renminbi. In contrast, the low value of a currency because of undervaluation does not happen because of market forces. This is due to the active manipulation of a currency and is act of government intervention. As a consequence the currency has a value underneath its official exchange rate (Baumol and Blinder). The consequence of undervaluation: Inflation Even though it is important to distinguish between both terms, the effects caused by depreciation help understand the effects caused by undervaluation. Depreciation reduces the value of a currency in relation to another. In our example, a weaker US-dollar leads to cheaper exports. The aggregate demand for these products will increase, because consumers everywhere will buy more of the less expensive products. This is a direct application of the law of demand (Baumol and Blinder). American exports would experience...

From Best to Worst

...Tapan, Elaine Joyce C. Tapan 1 English 10 March 17, 2015 From Best to Worst Fairy Tail is an on-going Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Hiro Mashima. The story revolves around the adventures of a magic guild named Fairy Tail—one of the foremost magic guilds in the land of Fiore. This is a shounen manga (aimed at a young male audience) and has several other genres such as action, adventure, comedy and fantasy. It has been published in Weekly Shounen Magazine since August 2, 2006. The volumes are released by Kodansha since December 15, 2006 and at present it has already 47 volumes. It also has an anime adaptation which started broadcasting in TV Tokyo on October 12, 2009. Fairy Tail is considered one of the mainstream manga and anime nowadays. It even has a Filipino dubbed version. (Fairy Tail Wiki) Although it is loved by many manga and anime enthusiast, there are several flaws I noticed when I read and watched it. These bothering flaws made me stop anticipating its weekly update. Years ago, this was my most favorite of all. But not anymore. Fairy Tail is one of the worst anime I have ever known. How was I able to have a hundred and eighty degree turn? There are three main reasons why. Reason number one: The animation and illustration have been inconsistent. The manga did not retain its old illustration. In the first few chapters, characters appeared more mature because of the sharp lines and pointed shapes. At present, their appearances changed into Tapan...

Fedex Courier Case

...Jason Hwang, Hiro Ikeda, Niki Sohnly MKTG 301 10.11.14 Federal Express Case Company Analysis: Courier Pak is an underrated service that is provided by FEC. Its profit margin is higher than all the other services provided (66%), and has huge growth potential. It has both great speed and reliability, making a service worth promoting. Customer Analysis: Currently, executives and their assistants are mainly using CP. The top three industries that use CP are Manufacturing and distribution, Advertising, and Printing and publishing. According to Exhibit 6, the market size of “emergency,” “rush,” or “special handling” delivery of small items/documents was around 870,000 per day. CPs are economically viable. Sales currently average 1300 per day, adding up to $10,725 in daily profits. Courier Pack earns a larger profit margin of 66%. In comparison, Priority One service generates 54.89% and the Standard Air Service generates a 26.94% margin. If sales were to increase to 6000 per day, that would be an increase in profits by $28050 per day, a substantial increase. Can FEC do 6000 CPs a day? The average Courier Pak weighs about 1 lb. The average flight carries 4,900 of freight that is loaded to an 85% of volume capacity. A 100% capacity would be at around 5764 lbs., and the difference would add 864 lbs. of CP that could be added onto any flight. Or, given a max capacity of 6200 lbs. on a Dassault Falcon minifreighter, it is possible to fit all 6000 of CP on one freighter....

The study covers current situations and socioemotional and socioeconomic problems of JFC and used standard qualitative techniques to gather field data. This study has identified that JFC are shaped by sociocultural and socioeconomic differences between Japan and the Philippines that play in individuals’ lives and decisions. The union of two people from different cultures and nationalities coupled with socioeconomic struggles and each individual’s underlying reasons to unite (marriage/cohabitation) may also lead to their separation. Furthermore, the study identified several unique socioemotional factors of the JFC as well: perceived unique ethnicity, the retention of a degree of love to the father who abandons them, and the need to see their fathers instead of feeling hatred and anger. Despite their abandonment, the JFC feel proud of their Japanese culture. Finally, JFC feel they...

Stock Market

...Review of Development Economics, 9(2), 166–176, 2005 Endogenous Growth Models and Stock Market Development: Evidence from Four Countries Guglielmo Maria Caporale, Peter Howells, and Alaa M. Soliman* Abstract This paper re-examines the relationship between stock market development and economic growth. It provides a theoretical basis for establishing the channel through which stock markets affect economic growth in the long run. It examines the hypothesis of endogenous growth models that financial development causes higher growth through its influence on the level of investment and its productivity. The empirical part of this study exploits techniques recently developed to test for causality in VARs. The evidence obtained from a sample of four countries suggests that investment productivity is the channel through which stock market development enhances the growth rate in the long run. 1. Introduction Several theoretical and empirical papers such as Levine (1991), Levine and Zervos (1995), Demirguc-Kunt (1994), Demirguc-Kunt and Levine (1995), Rousseau and Wachtel (2000) and Beck and Levine (2003), have suggested that stock market development affects economic growth in developing countries. The common problem with these studies, however, is that there is no discussion of the channels through which stock markets can stimulate economic growth. In traditional growth theory, the growth rate is a positive function of exogenous technical progress. However, financial development...
