...being the yin to royalty’s yang), but this kind of Confucian thought always places wives in the subservient position to their husbands. Louie also touches on this in “Hero: The Return of a Traditional Masculine Ideal in China”, noting that women can be categorized within yin-yang (mainly as yin), but the wen-wu categorization is almost exclusively reserved for men. The women in Hero are no exception, their characters only reacting in irrational and overly-emotional fits. In one example, after Broken Sword’s infidelity, Falling Snow becomes so enraged that she stabs him through a wall, which is not only an incredible overreaction but...

...As far as I’m concerned, if the situation with the Gulag prisoners gets 1 Micron worse, the league will be forced to make a final decisive action.” (pg. 136, Chapter 3) Wonder Woman and Rorschach were both characters that were written to symbolize the definition of retributivist, meaning that the policy of the justice system vindicates the criminals (Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy, Web. 13 Dec. 2016). Wonder Woman’s tone appears to be aggressive because she had failed her mission to demonstrate peace through a violent world. Wonder Woman, like Superman, has lost faith in society. This same concept is paralleled in Watchmen, where Rorschach’s Ink Blotch mask is symbolic to how he views the world as black and white, which branches from his own tragic past with his mother, and his father’s willingness to pursue a better life. Wonder Woman and Rorschach were both characters that had setbacks that had inspired them to take their anger out on characters who commit the greater atrocities, which were reflected upon how big of the crime was committed ("Deontology - By Branch / Doctrine - The Basics of Philosophy." ...Family culture and strongman Control in Huawei Being ranked No. 1 of “most influential Chinese business leaders” by Fortune China in three consecutive years from 2011 to 2013, Zhengfei Ren, the founder, controlling shareholder and CEO of Huawei is almost regarded as hero of the company.1 He has been the man who is influencing and inspiring the whole company since it was founded in 1987. Now, Huawei is a global leading company in ICT (information and communication technology) solution with revenue in 2012 more than 35 billion dollars.2 The magic rise of Huawei is largely attributed to the family based strongman culture with strong executive force from the top and ability to make long-term planning, but, as far as I can see, will hardly ensure future success. The inner network of relations called “organizational enthusiasm” plays an important role in Huawei’s internal management. Ren, is the one who “set fire” in the company. After serving in the PLA (Chinese Liberation Army) for several years, Ren created the Huawei Empire almost from nothing in his forties. He is described as extremely optimistic and strong. 3 As a small team with few resources, Ren’s enthusiasm and strong entrepreneurship is what kept people around him, working with him to their best. Rather than relationship between boss and staff, this, original from Chinese guanxi culture, this organizational enthusiasm is more like personal loyalty, trust and affection. Stronger than pure staff loyalty, this relationship...

...THE BIBLE’S INFLUENCE ON ENGLISH-AMERICAN LITERATURE by Zhang Lanlan June, 2007 Xiaogan University Abstract As the sutra of the Christianity, the Bible has a great influence on both English and American literature and offers an eternal theme of their literary creation .English and American writers use stories of the Bible by three main methods. First, they quote person's names or stories of the Bible as the characters' names or plots of the creations from the Bible directly. Sometimes they make some changes on the original stories. Sometimes they quote stories directly from the Bible as the writing materials. Second, they make use of symbolic meaning of the Bible by some technical such as simile, metaphor and symbolism, so that the stories could exert a great influence on contrasting with the new products. Third, they merge the plots of the Bible to give connotative efforts to the readers. Exploring the methods helps us know the western culture and consciousness, have a good appreciation and study for the English-American literature. key words: English-American literature ; the Bible; methods 《圣经》在英美文学作品中的影响 摘要 作为基督教的经典,《圣经》对英美文化影响深远,为英美文化创作提供了永恒的母题。

...------------------------------------------------- Philosophy Cynicism is one of the most striking of all the Hellenistic philosophies.[8] It offered people the possibility of happiness and freedom from suffering in an age of uncertainty. Although there was never an official Cynic doctrine, the fundamental principles of Cynicism can be summarised as follows:[9][10][11] 1. The goal of life is Eudaimonia and mental clarity or lucidity (ἁτυφια) - freedom from τύφος (smoke) which signified ignorance, mindlessness, folly, and conceit. 2. Eudaimonia is achieved by living in accord with Nature as understood by human reason. 3. τύφος (Arrogance) is caused by false judgments of value, which cause negative emotions, unnatural desires, and a vicious character. 4. Eudaimonia or human flourishing, depends on self-sufficiency (αὐτάρκεια), equanimity, arete, love of humanity, parrhesia and indifference to the vicissitudes of life (ἁδιαφορία). 5. One progresses towards flourishing and clarity through ascetic practices (ἄσκησις) which help one become free from influences – such as wealth, fame, or power – that have no value in Nature. Examples include Diogenes' practice of living in a tub and walking barefoot in winter. 6. A Cynic practices shamelessness or impudence (Αναιδεια) and defaces the Nomos of society; the laws, customs, and social conventions which people take for granted. Thus a Cynic has no property and rejects all conventional values of money, fame, power...

...Oral Roberts University SUPERIORITY AND BLURRED LINES: An observation of the themes communicated in major DC Comics storylines Joshua Gallego Philosophy of Science HONR 102 Dr. Ken Weed/Dr. Samuel Thorpe March 13, 2014 Introduction Superheroes are part of an American upbringing. Stories of persons with capabilities that far exceed that of the human race are popular and appealing to our youth and even to many adults. Entertainment in general pervades the American culture, and this specific type of entertainment dealing with superheroes is of considerable size and has been a constant for several decades. Images of Superman, Captain America and many others are immediately recognized when seen. The entertainment value of these fictitious tales has caused the companies that own them to expand into creating computer games and producing movies, which has made them even more visible. It is considered weird if a person does not even know the basic story of these costumed figures. The adventures, stories, and even lives of these fictions have become a part of the American Psyche. Throughout the course of this semester, discussion in the Philosophy of Science class has led to topics such as the paradigms and presuppositions that we approach our world from and the metaphors that we use to communicate ideas and concepts. Such discussion has led to the asking of questions concerning things that we encounter in everyday circumstances. Questions like “What are the presuppositions...

...selected here, whether public heroes or simply my favorites, have surprised me in one way or another.”1 Morgan’s definition of a hero is a person “who [goes] their own way against the grain, regardless of custom, convenience, or habits of deference to authority,” and who has an “ability to say no.”2 According to Morgan, then, Anne Hutchinson is such a person who fits this definition. In 1637, following her trial on charges that she “had broken the Law of God,”3 the court and the Massachusetts Bay Colony Governor, John Winthrop, banished Anne Hutchinson for heresy. She was banished three years after she and her family arrived to join the Massachusetts Puritan colony. Morgan considers Anne Hutchinson a hero because she exhibited courage when she stood up for her beliefs in a court of law, before a panel of...

Many companies who do business in others countries and cultures fail miserably. Managers must do their homework and learn the business ethic and culture lifestyles before even considering venturing into markets in different counties. To me it seems like neither of the managers did their homework and are having problems maintaining the economic factors that influence their company Political officials are going to be a big part of the team because they have strong influence on economic life in China. Ray must reach out to them and understand their goals. Success will depend on the personal involvement of top executives. Upon achieving his goal he feels that he has done a good job for his country morally and for their side of enterprise by creating jobs for close to 3,000 people. He wants to grow the scope of Shui Fabrics and establish a national brand. ...Prophet of Innovation: Joseph Schumpeter and Creative Destruction, by Thomas K. McCraw, Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 719 pages, $35. In Joseph A. Schumpeter’s (1883-1950) encyclopedic History of Economic Analysis, Schumpeter began by proclaiming that histories of economics should confine themselves to economic analysis, which he defined as “the analytic or scientific aspects of economic thought" (1954: 1). Schumpeter then proceeded to ignore his own edict, for over 1000 small-print pages. Having preached analysis-only Schumpeter practiced more ecumenically, weaving together intellectual history, biography, and economic sociology. Indeed, Schumpeter spent most of his last decade writing the 800,000 words of the ferociously erudite History, and thereby failing to complete a long-planned work of economic analysis. Thomas McCraw’s splendid new book brilliantly illuminates this Schumpeterian paradox, and the many others that made Schumpeter, as Phillip Mirowski put it, “a living, breathing contradiction” (1994: 5). Prophet of Innovation is not just a beautifully drawn portrait of Schumpeter’s life and times, it is also a distinguished business historian’s meditation on the two opposed cultures of political economy post-1870: history and theory. The Prophet of Innovation, among its other accomplishments, tells the story of how a great and productive intellect wrestled with the two-cultures problem in political economy. In the work of Schumpeter, McCraw finds the very personification...

...http://larrypage.weebly.com/ Background You always hear stories about people who knew what they wanted to do with their life the second they started living. Larry Page was, and still is, one of those people. Since the tender age of 12, Page knew that one day he would start his own business. Of course, the elements contributing to this decision began at a much younger age than twelve. One would say that the love of inventing things ran in the family. Page's parents, Gloria and Carl Page, were two highly talented and intelligent computer science professors at the University of Michigan. While other six years olds were off playing sports and collecting baseball cards, Page took great interest in dismantling items in his house to "see how it worked". When asked about his childhood, Page commented "(there were) computers and Popular Science magazines everywhere". From this quote, it is quite evident that there was something unusual about Page from a very young age. Page moved on to become the first kid at his school to turn in an assignment from a word processor. One of his first inventions was an inkject printer made entirely from LEGO bricks. As Page grew older, he decided not to put his talent of inventing items to waste, and became interested in the world of business. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in computer engineering from the University of State Michigan and a Master of Science in computer science from Stanford University. He graduated from both schools with honours...

She also wanted her employees to fit a certain image and hired accordingly, some could argue this can cause some ethical problems. Philanthropic- The mission statement of The Body Shop is “To dedicate our business to the pursuit of social and environmental change” and the entire company was based around this. They contributed a part of their earnings to environmental change. Roddick shared her information about certain products with other companies in hopes of reducing animal testing.
