The new technology that is breaking through the agriculture and farming industry right now is in-vitro meat products. This new break through technology could bring the end of your tradition cattle or any type of meat raised mammal farm. in-vitro Meat is the new upcoming trend that will be hitting the science labs rather than the fields across America. This artificial meat will revolutionize the food industry; the future flesh will be scientifically created and can produce a variety of meats. This biological creation will be a mere cloning process mass-producing food at a more efficient and environmentally friendly way. Although people at first are generally against artificially made food, the prices will be too hard to pass up with the increase in population making the meat industry sky rocket causing the price of your everyday meats to do the same. This new technology will change the way America goes about getting their daily value of protein. The advantage of in-vitro meat significantly out weights its disadvantages. One of the main one that catches the eye of researcher is the amount of land we will have saved. Hank Hyena of H+ Magazine describes how in-vitro meat will change the structure of America for the good. As in-vitro meat becomes more scientifically sound it will be sustainably cheaper then the slow-grown red meat and poultry marketplace. The prices of real meat and poultry are expected to reach two trillion dollars by the year 2050. Scientist working on meat assured by that time that it would cost half of that to run the artificially grown in-vitro meat saving the consumer nearly 50% percent of the price. This will slowly be the end of slaughterhouses as they try to make their last quick dollar before the industry comes to a screaming halt. IVM(abbreviation of in-vitro meat) sales will be aided by the continued outbreaks of filthy over-crowded. This will then cause public hysteria leaving the human population questioning the value of their health every time they eat naturally raised meat. The safe alternative of IVM meat will leave the population at no other choice to choose the safer route when eating their protein. Farmers then realize that the industry is finally dead. Urbanization will drastically increase as farmers will move away from rural areas in seek of a new job. Rural real estate will plummet which will start a boom in the economy allowing for growth in different areas of the country. Now you say, “What will happen to all the farmers who have no jobs?” Well in fact they have already thought that out! The farmers will be utilized as techies and designers of the new in-vitro meat farms. With no real lose on either side of the party this has nothing but positives associated with it, economy up rises while farmers transition into a more modern way of producing meat. Another advantage in-vitro brings to the table is healthier human beings. in-vitro meat will be one hundred percent muscle. It will eliminate the entire artery clogging saturated fats that are found in meat today. This is inevitable to happen now with how the meat industry is handled. We are constantly feeding and growing the animals, which is not healthy for them at all. The population of meat can not keep up with the human race which forces the farmers to override feed the livestock just to keep up. By eliminating this process us that is both hurting the livestock and us, in-vitro meat will take out all the effects that meat has today and make it better then organic meats. Instead scientists plan to add heart healthy Omega 3’s into the meat. IVM will contain no hormones, salmonella, e. coli, campylobacter, mercury, dioxin, or antibiotics that infect primitive meat. Also will reduce the diseases spread from over-crowded farming as I stated earlier leaving the human population less susceptible of contracting those diseases. Starvation in third world countries will essentially be eliminated when IVM kits are delivered to these famine-plagued nations. The global water crisis will also be alleviated because currently livestock and crops used to feed them take up about eight percent of the water supply we use. Another reason it will make humans healthier is the meat contains no bones, which means no deaths will occur over malicious bones or gristle. Environmentally IVM is definitely the smarter and more obvious choice to a cleaner planet. Today’s meat industry is believed to contribute to fifty one percent of all the human-caused greenhouse emissions. According to Dr. Edelman, statistically cattle defecate one hundred and thirty more times the volume of a human. This creates an astounding sixty four million tons of sewage that is often flushed down the Mississippi River killing fish and coral reefs in the Gulf of Mexico. Livestock’s burps and farts are equally destroying the ozone layer, with sixty eight percent of ammonia, sixty five percent of nitrous oxide, thirty seven percent of methane, nine percent of carbon dioxide, and many other pollutants all are caused in some way through livestock. The biggest problem with big meat animals is the waste valuable land. Researchers found that eighty percent of Amazon deforestation is accounted for because of beef ranching which clearly cutting land the size of Belgium on a yearly rate out of the Amazon. Also livestock tend to need a lot of water. Its calculated that fifteen thousand liters of water is needed just for one kilogram of beef. That is absurd! in-vitro meat brings this whole process in an environmentally friendly fashion. Even though critics state that in-vitro factories would produce just as much emissions as a normal farm, researchers have found that it would actually cut emissions by eighty percent. If we want to push to make Earth a better place to live for generations to come IVM could be the jump-start on the right path. If the calculations are correct we could see a better planet than what we have today and that’s promising as we move on in the future. Hopefully will force the movement of more environmentally friendly everything! This technology will also benefit another part of the Agriculture field. Vertical farming will be the new sensation. According to Hank Hyena, “building gigantic urban multi level greenhouses that utilize hydroponics and interior grow-lights to create bug-free, dirt-free, quick-growing super veggies and fruit.”(Hyena 2009), making a perfect complement to IVM meat. Every metro dweller will be in walking distance of fresh food. The success of FarmScrapers will cripple rural agriculture and push for urbanization. However, as simple as this technology seems to be we still aren’t doing it. Mainly because most people today feel it is morally wrong. Many believe that the creation of life in this manner shouldn’t be done according to their religious beliefs. Neil Stephens of Scripted composed an article discussing this matter. He goes about stating whether or not if the meat was actually ever “alive”. The title of his article “in-vitro Meat: Zombies on the Menu?” goes into great detail on the process of creating the meat. He believes that without actually harming the animal in any matter the process shouldn’t be frowned upon because it can greatly help society. He thinks that most of the human population will look further into the idea of their meat not actually being real rather than if it was alive or not. This will be a strong movement for Americans to accept being a heavy meat eating country the majority will have to be satisfied with how it is or the push for in-vitro meat could fail. Through the research of in-vitro meat the upcoming technology in the field of Agriculture can make a big step in the future of how the meat is produced throughout the world. Something this big could drastically change several ways that humans go about their lives. With all the positives that were found there is no reason for in-vitro meat not to become the number one source of meat. Its advantages out number its disadvantages on so many levels. Environmentally, economically, human health, and many more aspects of life could be changed for the good. As they continue to workout the kinks it will be excited to watch the industry change before our eyes.
