Decolonization in the Battle of Algiers In Frantz Fanon’s The Wretched of the Earth, violence was a cornerstone in the very heart of Decolonization. The proletariat in The Communist Manifesto was recognized as people with the right to congregate and bring up issues for their class to be recognized. However the proletariat class of the colonized countries was not given the same opportunity because their class was determined by race and was perceived as an inferior that can be denied basic human rights because of their inferiority. This is coupled by the fact that the settlers are completely thriving in all aspects of life while the native people are left to barely scrape by in crowded neighborhoods for an extended period of time. Along with the ethical, political, and moral ramifications of the impact of violence, perhaps this film serves an example for a fresh perspective of violence. As stated before, the FNL were willing to utilize the cycle of hatred and violence between the French and Algerians to demonstrate to the French that their methods of ruling the Algerian people are yielding the exact opposite and even detrimental results that they want from their colony so they might as well let Algeria be an independent country to protect the powers of their own country. Violence has always been associated with a negative connotation, and through it, the French were involved with a colony that they cannot profit from or progress with because the continued violence does not give them any benefit. This is also coupled with the fact that their reputation would be tarnished because it shows other countries that France is incapable of handling their colonies. If the French were to realize this is happening, they would also realize there is absolutely no benefit to preserving their presence in Algeria any longer.
