Catastrophism is the theory that the Earth has been affected in the past by sudden, short-lived, violent events, possibly worldwide in scope.[1] The dominant paradigm of modern geology is uniformitarianism (sometimes described as gradualism), in which slow incremental changes, such as erosion, create the Earth's appearance. This view holds that the present is the key to the past, and that all things continue as they were from the beginning of the world. Recently a more inclusive and integrated view of geologic events has developed, changing the scientific consensus to accept some catastrophic events in the geologic past. This held that there have been violent and sudden natural catastrophes such as great floods and the rapid formation of major mountain chains. Plants and animals living in those parts of the world where such events occurred were often killed off, according to the 19th-century French scientist Georges Cuvier. Then new life forms moved in from other areas. As a result, the fossil record for a region shows abrupt changes in species. Cuvier's explanation relied solely on scientific evidence rather than biblical interpretation.
Immanuel Velikovsky's
In the 1950s, Immanuel Velikovsky propounded catastrophism in several popular books. He speculated that the planet Venus is a former "comet" which was ejected from Jupiterand subsequently 3,500 years ago made two catastrophic close passes by Earth, 52 years apart, and later interacted with Mars, which then had a series of near collisions with Earth which ended in 687 B.C., before settling into its current orbit. Velikovsky used this to explain the biblical plagues of Egypt, the biblical reference to the "Sun standing still" for a day (Joshua 10:12 & 13, explained by changes in Earth's rotation), and the sinking of Atlantis. Scientists rejected Velikovsky's theories, often quite passionately.[11]
Modern theories also suggest that Earth's anomalously large moon was formed catastrophically. In a paper published in Icarus in 1975, William K. Hartmann and Donald R. Davisproposed that a catastrophic near-miss by a large planetesimal early in Earth's formation approximately 4.5 billion years ago blew out rocky debris, remelted Earth and formed theMoon, thus explaining the Moon's lesser density and lack of an iron core.[14] The impact theory does have some faults; some computer simulations show the formation of a ring or multiple moons post impact, and elements are not quite the same between the earth and moon
One of the key differences between catastrophism and uniformitarianism is that to function, uniformitarianism requires the assumption of vast time-lines, where as catastrophism can function with or without assumptions of long timelines.
-------------------------------------------------
Geology and biology[edit]
In the natural sciences, gradualism is a theory which holds that profound change is the cumulative product of slow but continuous processes, often contrasted with catastrophism. The theory was proposed in 1795 by James Hutton, a Scottish physician and gentleman farmer, and was later incorporated into Charles Lyell's theory of uniformitarianism. Tenets from both theories were applied to biology and formed the basis of early evolutionary theory.
Charles Darwin was influenced by Lyell's Principles of Geology, which explained both uniformitarian methodology and theory. Using uniformitarianism, which states that one cannot make an appeal to any force or phenomenon which cannot presently be observed (seecatastrophism), Darwin theorized that the evolutionary process must occur gradually, not in saltations, since saltations are not presently observed, and extreme deviations from the usual phenotypic variation would be more likely to be selected against.
Gradualism is often confused with the concept of phyletic gradualism. It is a term coined by Stephen Jay Gould and Niles Eldredge to contrast with their model of punctuated equilibrium, which is gradualist itself, but argues that most evolution is marked by long periods of evolutionary stability (called stasis), which is punctuated by rare instances of branching evolution.[2]

Demi Feels: A Fictional Narrative

...Demi felt like a bug under a microscope with everybody gawking at her. “I was only 6 weeks old, a mere pup when my mother died. It’s correct I was raised by my mother’s pack of rogues; however, I’m not a rogue. I refused to kill and eat humans, they would beat me for refusing, --- I just couldn’t do it.” Lexi walked toward Demi. “Why should we believe you? Your mother was an exceptional deceiver; she even deceived Dusky the alpha of the respectable werewolves.” Demi sobbed. “I’m neither rogue nor similar to my mother.” Demi raised her shirt and turned to show Lexi the scar that the rogues had left as a reminder that she had refused to kill a human. “This is one of many beatings I took for not killing a human. As for my mother being a liar, I couldn’t say, as I explained I didn’t know her.” Lexi huffed. “That scar could’ve been from anything.” Shimmer turned Lexi to face her and nodded her head no, then pulled Lexi away from Demi to stop her from saying something she would regret later....

Mothers Role in Mythology

...outcome of the myth. To fully understand how the mothers affected the myths, it is important to examine both and understand they way both mothers went about helping their sons. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh is a demi-god and ruler of Uruk and has seemingly god-like abilities and because of this, the people of Uruk looked at him as a hero. With his god-like abilities, Gilgamesh went on many journeys that tested his strength and physical endurance. Although part god and seemingly invincible, Gilgamesh still sought his mother’s opinion. One example of this is when Gilgamesh seeks counsel with his mother Ninsun to understand two dreams he had about a future opponent named Enkidu. For the first dream, Ninsun interprets: This star of heaven which descended like a meteor from the sky;[sic]which you tried to lift, but found too heavy, when you tried to move it it would not budge, and so you brought it to my feet; I made it for you, a goad and spur, and you were drawn as though to a woman. This is the strong comrade, the one who brings help to his friend in his need ("THE COMING OF ENKIDU." 4). It was because of the information given by his mother that Gilgamesh was able to fight Enkidu and later become the best of friends with him. Later, Enkidu would join and aid Gilgamesh throughout many of his...

...6 Things Women Should be Prepared for when They Join the Military As of 2011, only 14% of service members in the armed forces were female.[i] Other females are usually few and far between so get used to the idea of figuring out gender specific details on your own. If you count Private Benjamin or Demi Moore in whatever movie she shaved her head for; women generally have a skewed perception of what they are in for when they join. #6 Boobs You will need to figure out what to do with your boobs. Chances are as a civilian, you don’t think too much about your sweater puppies (some occupations are certainly an exception) but due to the physical nature of what you do they will need to be handled. Got big ones? Short of strapping them down with a ratchet strap, you have got to either (A) invest in some serious sports bras or (B) wear two more at one time and hope you don’t suffocate a la Keira Knightly in Pirates of the Caribbean. The female dress uniform requires all the medals and awards to be placed on a straight line but also to follow the curves of the soldier. Which basically means, “Hey take these and pin them somewhere on your chest, just make sure they are straight on those curves of yours.” The guys get to take off their jacket, measure it and put it on. All the ladies, are left standing in a mirror poking sharp pins into our chest and hoping they’re straight. #5 People Will Automatically Assume You Suck You’ve watched all the recruiter’s videos of everyone working...

...When discussing fashion women often talk about the amazing dress they picked up or the sexy peep toe heels that they just couldn’t bare to pass by, however, very often does one think of the bra and its impact on fashion history.   A necessary evil in most women’s lives the “over the shoulder boulder holder” has been around since ancient times in some form or another.   Before the invention of the brassiere women were suffocating in corsets that resulted in crushed rib cages and damaged reproductive organs.   But in 1914, Mary Phelps Jacob changed all that by stitching together the very first bra.   The rest, they say, is history. History of the Bra Each and every day millions of women wake up and reach into their dresser drawer to choose the bra she will wear for the day.   Sometimes careful thought is put into which one to choose based off color, texture, or function and sometimes no thought is put into it at all as she wears whatever she grabs first.   “We put a bra on every morning without thinking about it,” Cherry Berry, author of Hoorah for the Bra, said.   “It’s so much more than an undergarment.   It’s so rich in history (Randle, 2009).”   The bra has a long history that is intertwined with women’s social status, fashion evolution and the ever-changing views of the body. The bra is often looked at as an object of seduction, glamour or oppression, however, its development throughout history serves as a social and material artifact (Farrell-Beck, 2002).   Garments used...

Who Is Aeneas and How Does He Connect Homer (Iliad) to Roman Mythology

...(Demigod is a mythological being who is partly divine and partly human). His father was Anchises, a member of the Trojan Royal Family. His mother was Aphrodite, the goddess of love, beauty and pleasure, who is also known as Venus in roman Literature. Aphrodite was intrigued by Anchises when she saw him on the hills of Mount Ida that she seduced him and decided to bear his son, Aeneas. Aeneas was raise by nymphs until he was sent to live with his father at a young age (5 in roman mythology, 10 in Greek Mythology). Anchises was sworn to secrecy about his son being a demi god however he decided to break this promise, and after doing so, Anchises was struck by lightning and left blind as a punishment. As the Greeks invaded Troy, Aeneas is seen as being hesitant and not joining the war immediately. As Roman mythology states, Aeneas joined the war after the Greeks stole his cattle. Another reason why Aeneas did not join the war immediately was a personal conflict he had with King Priam of Troy. Aeneas did not receive the appropriate glory for being a member of the royal family, and had a dispute with Priam about this. Aeneas later on married Creusa, who was the daughter of Priam, where they had a son named Ascanius. As the Trojan War progressed, Aeneas claimed multiple victories, and became one of the Trojan army’s leaders. He was said to be the greatest warrior after Hector. The Iliad mentions him as an upright and moral man, since he respected the gods and had great obedience to...

Remos and Romolous

...twin brother Remus were the children of Rhea Silvia and Mars (or in some variations the demi-god hero Hercules). Romulus and Remus are best known for being the founders of the city of Rome. Their story is recorded by many authors including Virgil who claims their birth and adventures were fated in order for Rome to be founded. The Birth & Parentage of Romulus & Remus Romulus and Remus were the direct descendants of Aeneas, whose fate-driven adventures to discover Italy are described by Virgil in The Aeneid. Romulus and Remus were related to Aeneas through their mother's father, Numitor. Numitor was a king of Alba Longa, an ancient city of Latium in central Italy, and father to Rhea Silvia. Before Romulus' and Remus' conception, Numitor's reign was usurped by Nimitor's younger brother, Amulius. Amulius inherited control over Alba Longa's treasury with which he was able to dethrone Numitor and become king. Amulius, wishing to avoid any conflict of power, killed Nimitor's male heirs and forced Rhea Silvia to become a Vestal Virgin. Vestal Virgins were priestesses of Vesta, patron goddess of the hearth; they were charged with keeping a sacred fire that was never to be extinguished and to take vows of chastity. There is much debate and variation as to whom was the father of Romulus and Remus. Some myths claim that Mars appeared and lay with Rhea Silvia; other myths attest that the demi-god hero Hercules was her partner. However, the author Livy claims that Rhea Silvia was...

...that Aphrodite had offered to Paris. Many great soldiers fought and died in combat for their city-state. The strategies used by the Greek army were impressive and productive. The war has gone down in history just as Achilles had wanted. The Trojan War was a very eventful battle, fought by many soldiers, at the city of Troy. The Greek army had some of the finest warriors and leaders of the ancient times. Menelaus was the king who united the Greek armies in which Achilles was not fond of. Menelaus was brother of Agamemnon who was the Achaean King and the leader of the combined armies. The Greek army was considerably large because they had conquered so many city-states and forced them to join or be enslaved. Achilles was the greatest of all the soldiers during the war. Achilles said to be “a demi-god and the Greatest warrior in Homer’s Iliad.”(Cartwright) Achilles singlehandedly conquered the Trojan beach with his powerful yet small Argonaut army ahead of all the other Greek ships. Achilles greatest war accomplishment was killing Hector the eldest son of king Priam, and the greatest Trojan warrior. Achilles was eventually “killed by an arrow to his only weak spot, his...

The Different Flavors of Love by Shakespeare

...The Different Flavors of Love Presented By Shakespeare Madhumeta Ganesh @30024 We believe love to be a pure and sweet emotion/virtue shared between two or more creatures; compassion, self-sacrifice and a strong connection between a couple represent the love involved in a relationship. However, in the plays Much Ado About Nothing and Antony and Cleopatra, Shakespeare shows that either man uses love to achieve his own goals (like Claudio who wants to marry Hero as she is the perfect Elizabethan woman) or love is influenced in man by other people (like Beatrice and Benedick) or the intensity of love even brings about the death of lovers (as in Antony and Cleopatra). In addition, some characters explain their actions by professing or implying that they did them out of love (or heart-break due to lost love) when that is not actually the case. A key scene in Much Ado About Nothing occurs when Claudio publicly declares Hero to be sexually promiscuous just because he apparently saw her speaking to a man outside her bedroom window; Claudio’s tries to redeem his honor in the eyes of the public while giving people the impression that he is a betrayed and heart-broken lover who is shaming Hero. Similarly, in the Battle of Actium which takes place in Antony and Cleopatra, we see Caesar making a grave mistake of following Cleopatra when she sails away mid-battle. “Egypt, thou knew’st too well My heart was to thy rudder tied by th’ strings, And thou shouldst tow me after.” (3.12.60 – 62) ...

(Eden 39) Women in military positions is an issue that has been very controversial for many years. Today, women that are usually serving in the military have an administrative or medical occupation, but filmmakers like Ridley Scott show that women can be strong, independent soldiers. In the movie, the main character Lieutenant Jordan O'Neil played by Demi Moore, is a woman who works for the Naval Intelligence Center (N.I.C) as a topographic analyst. Jordan is selected by female Senator Lillian DeHaven to participate in a test that would allow a woman to take part in the Navy Seals training program. OK, I realise that hardly narrows down the options – they’re narrowed down by the demands and constraints of a body-image-obsessed patriarchy, which insists they have no dinner. But yes, there are lots of thin actresses. But this one’s really thin. Come on, you remember – she had that award-winning haircut in the miserable musical, same name as Shakespeare’s wife. Something to do with a cottage. I’d Google her if I had time. Anyway, she’s in it. I feel I’ve left a sentence open somewhere there – a dangling demi-clause (as when the Christmas float sped under the low bridge). Yes! That’s it: David Nicholls was explaining to the Cheltenham literature festival why there was such a long gap between One Day and his latest novel, Us. Which wasn’t that he refused to rush his new novel – it was that he didn’t. Refuse to, that is. He did rush it, is what I’m saying. What he specifically did was download a piece of software called Write or Die that requires you to bang the words out at a certain rate or it starts deleting them. Nicholls described it as like “writing with a gun to my head”. It enabled him quickly to generate 35,000 unusable words. That’s enough for another series of Top Gear. It sounds like a nightmare. The Use of Propaganda and the Media by Political Groups

...CGW4U0-01 January 20, 2012 The Use of Propaganda and the Media by Political Groups Propaganda is a tool that is used all over the world to influence how people think. Propaganda has fittingly been referred to as “the weapon of mass persuasion” by the Canadian Broadcasting Channel. Propaganda can be defined as communications with the goal of influencing the opinion or attitude of a population in favor of the ideology of oneself or one’s group. The messages behind propaganda are almost always political. Governments and militaries around the globe have used propaganda again and again to control their followers. Famous examples of aggressive propaganda campaigns are those of the United State Military, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Emperor Hirohito of Japan and Joseph Stalin. In the past, printed media was the main form of spreading war propaganda. As society and technology evolved over the decades, so did propaganda. The messages hidden in modern media are far more difficult to identify than ever before. The use of propaganda has always had specific motives, but are the reasons behind war propaganda harmful towards society? What are specific ways that propaganda has affected the populations of the world? There are many negative examples of ways that the global population has been influenced by propaganda during war times throughout history. Propaganda produced by the government is almost always under-handed and one sided. There seems to be a formula for the perfect war campaign...
