Title: Describe what organisations are and why they exist. Explain how they tend to change over time.

An Organisation can be defined as the following:

“An organisation is a clearly bounded group of people who pursue separate co-ordinated and formally structured activities which together contribute to a common goal”

There are several main components to an organisation; these include clear boundaries, enabling the organisation to identify who belongs to a particular organisation; stable structured relationships which allow for clear lines of communication and collaboration between people; defined and grouped tasks, employees having different roles/tasks to complete and a collective purpose.

A similar definition is:

“Organising is a process of determining who will perform the tasks needed to achieve organisational objectives, the resources to be used and the way the tasks will be managed and co-ordinated"

Although organising is not primarily concerned with the specificity of goals and tasks, how things are organised will ultimately have an effect on which tasks can be attempted and the degree to which they are achieved, it is more successful if given to specific people or groups of people rather than those that do not have the required skills.

There are different types of organisations that exist; a sole trader is the simplest of such legal entities. It is owned by one person who runs it and is the only person responsible for the organisation, like a plumber for example. They have complete liability for any debts that the business incurs and there is no clear distinction between the behaviour of the organisation and the individual.

A partnership exists between 2 – 20 individuals; its legal relationship is created by when the a Deed of Partnership is signed. Like the sole trader, they are liable for any debts incurred jointly and severally,

Four Models of Health

...Compare and contrast the four main models of health in the Sociology of Health literature, and explain how each of them has influenced our understanding of the concept of health and well-being. Health is a term that is commonly debated and the definition varies from one profession to another and is a controversial term. The World Health Organisation describes health as: “A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (WHO, 1948) This definition was formulated in 1948 and at the time was a breakthrough in the health care sector and was finally seen as a positive definition of health, rather than negative. Most definition concentrated on disease and illness. There are some criticisms that state that the model describes health as a ‘state’ rather than a process and does not put any certain boundaries on what is considered “health”. In healthcare, models are used to diagnose and explain an individual’s health. There are four main models that dominate the health care profession which are the biomedical model, social model, biopsychosocial model and the holistic model. In this essay I will discuss all four models by looking at their advantages and limitations in health care. The biomedical model is a dominant model of disease in contemporary medicine and was devised by medical scientists for the study of disease. It was created as a scientific model therefor involved a set of scientific assumptions and rules. Biomedicine...

...sociological perspective is not clear to you, the first part of these Notes is given over to a brief overview of this perspective. If you are familiar with this perspective, then this overview will serve as revision material... The second part of these Notes will provide an overview of some of the basic themes and theories put forward by writers working within this general perspective to explain crime. Functionalism: An Overview The Functionalist perspective is a form of Structuralist sociology and, as such, we can initially characterise it as a form of macro sociological theorising. In this respect, the main theoretical question addressed by sociologists working within the Functionalist perspective is that of: * How do social systems ("societies") hold together? In their attempts to provide an answer to this question, Functionalists have initially concentrated upon two ideas that are closely related to the above: 1. How is order maintained in any society? 2. What are the main sources of stability in any society? As you might imagine - given that the theoretical emphasis seems to be placed on rather grand questions about the nature of social systems - Functionalist sociologists are not particularly concerned with an examination of individual ideas, meanings and interpretations. We will look in more detail about why this should be the case in a moment. What they do tend to emphasise, however, is the idea that the basis of social order is to be found...
