In, “My Papa’s Waltz” by Theodore Roethke, “Those Winter Sundays” by Robert Hayden, and in “Photograph of My Father” in His Twenty-Second Year by Raymond Carver, all the narrators have a relationship with their fathers. The narrators describe the negative memories of their father of either: drinking, being abusive, being fearful, or being a negative role model but, all still find the love for their fathers. In “My Papa’s Waltz,” the narrator describes his father as a drinker, “the whiskey on your breath” (line 1).
