...Discussion1 Leon Downton ENG 225 Introduction to Film July 25, 2013 Instructor Mathew Warren In our weekly chapter reading (Goodykoontz, B., & Jacobs, C. P. (2011). It is said that the improvement of technology, which has put better equipment in the hands of more people, it has never been easier to physically make a movie than it is today. Distributing the movie or, getting a studio to buy it so that it can be put into theaters, on the other hand, is often more difficult. Financial difficulties have forced the closing of smaller studios that had been the best option for filmmakers with a lot of ideas but little money. It does mean, however, that it’s harder for worthy movies to be distributed even at what is known as an art house—a theater that shows low–budget and challenging films (the ones that aren’t advertised in commercials during football games). Many studios are simply not spending the money to buy as many films, and this leaves all of us the poorer. At the same time small studios are cutting back, the larger studios spend hundreds of millions in the hopes of coming up with a blockbuster (a film that makes a lot of money at the box office). It’s a form of high stakes gambling: The studios risk a lot of money in movies they believe will be blockbusters, in the hopes of getting a lot back in return. Technology has improved to the point that it is now possible to watch a blockbuster film on a hand held electronic device like an iPod, for example. (Ironically this...

...Internal controls are referred to the methods established by a company to safeguard its assets. Internal controls are designed with the idea of achieving a company's objectives, which include the effectiveness and efficiency of operations, that the information presented to financial statement users is reliable, and that the firm is complying with regulations and laws (Bodnar & Hopwood, 2013, p.13). Internal control requires the distribution of responsibilities among employees. It is important for employees to know their task or job function in an entity since they will work harder to control these responsibilities. One example of an internal control placed in a company is the segregation of duties, which implies that the same department or person does not have control upon accounting and financial responsibilities (Bodnar & Hopwood, 2013, p.14). Internal control has an important role in the development of Accounting Information System (AIS) since the success of AIS depends on the effectiveness of the internal controls of a firm. AIS is defined as the transformation of financial and other data, collected by people and equipment, into information. The effectiveness of internal controls assure that the data entered by employees of a company in a computerized system, the techniques used to process information, the methods used to store information, and the information produced are accurate and appropriate Internal controls are designed to monitor and keep the quality of...

...1. What is your main take-away from this article? What did you learn the most? After reading the article by Simona Covel, my main take-away was that business owners and future entrepreneurs should always research and understand all possible business structures prior to starting a business. The example of Susan Hartzler illustrated the ideas mentioned in my main take-away. Susan Hartzler “did not know to ask” an advisor about how to set up a business structure that best suits her needs and therefore lost personal assets when she faced bankruptcy (Covel 1). The actions of Susan show how important it is to recognize that each business structure has its risks and how important it is as a business owner to comprehend these in order to protect oneself from losing any personal assets. Prior to reading the article, I believed that a Limited Liability Corporation was a type of structure that prevented the loss of personal assets in bankruptcy. However, after reading the article and being informed about Mr. Tardiff and Ms. Watson-Tardiff’s case, I learned the most about limited liability corporations because it went against my original understanding of this type of business structure. I did not realize that, despite a business being an LLC, banks require the guarantee of a personal asset like a car or home in order for a business owner to get money to run or start their business. I believed a loan under the name of the business did not require such a guarantee from the business owner...

...In our book, Rao says Millennials are considered multitasking and high-achieving. They positive characteristics they bring to the workplace are that they are very competent technically. They have used technology all their lives right from their school through their college years (Rao, 2013.). Another positive work-related characteristic of Gen Y is that they are ambitious. Often I have had to be slowed down because I am so anxious to get my job done and move onto the next activity. Gen Y’s expectations need to be tempered sometimes. Gen Y is also more likely be a team player. They often want to be involved with whatever is going on, and they will do almost anything to be able to be included in whatever is going on. I’d say another positive characteristic is that we like to be liked. Personally speaking, I often prefer feedback of how I am doing a job. I prefer being often told how I am doing so I can make adjustments if necessary. As for the negative characteristics, Douglas Main says in his article that Millennials have been characterized in a number of different ways. On the negative side, they've been described as lazy, narcissistic and prone to jump from job to job (Main, 2013.). I am not sure I agree with that that is a negative thing. I know many of my generation have trouble finding a job in their interest or field, and they get tired of working in places that they aren’t passionate about. That leads them to finding other jobs until they can land a job they love. Negative...

...Chapter 2: Review Questions 3. Compare and contrast direct finance and indirect finance. Which is more likely to have a larger share of the total financial market in a mature economy? In a young economy? Why? The financial system proposes two ways to finance. The first is direct finance through financial markets and the second is indirect finance through financial intermediaries, like banks finance companies and mutual funds. They both use financial securities and are managed in financial markets. Indirect finance is used more when the financial system is young then when the economy gradually increases it grows to indirect finance, this is so because when the financial system is young it depends on intermediaries. There is less of a risk with indirect finance because the intermediary usually has a firmly set line of credit. Both can cause risks though and they both face different problems with borrowers in difficulty of finance. 4. 5. What is the relationship between the efficiency of a financial system and the rate of economic growth? Financial systems play a huge role in industrializing many in making it easier by the mobilization of capital. “Matching those who have savings with those who want to borrow is the essential purpose of the financial system” (Croushore, 13). The activities consists of money flowing from savers to borrowers and in return borrowers give savers financial securities declaring their repayment. These financial systems encourage...

...discuss each of the following and why you think you could be well matched to this profession: * Tasks, Tools, & Technology * Knowledge, Skills, Abilities * Work Activities and Context * Wages & Employment Trends, State and National Availability The profession I chose was Child, Family and School Social worker. The task for this profession include counseling individuals, groups or families in a wide range of issues from unemployment to health/ mental issues. Another task would be to ask as a link between students, schools, family services, child guidance clinics, courts, protective services and doctors to help children with various issues. Because almost everything is now electronic; computers, printers, and fax machines are the tools to complete this job, as well as Microsoft software (excel, word, etc.) To be able to be successful in this profession I would need knowledge in therapy and counseling. I would also need to know quite a bit about sociology and anthropology as well as legal codes and government regulations. The skills needed are pretty much basic. They include reading comprehension, active listening, monitoring and social perceptiveness. Work activities include organizing, planning and prioritizing work. You would also need to analyze and evaluate situations for the best possible solution. There is a lot of communication involved. The work context is done through a variety of sources. Telephone, face to face, fax and electronic email...

...1. I chose the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993. The Family and Medical Leave Act provides unpaid leave of absence for situations regarding the birth, adoption or fostering a employees child and for serious health condition for immediate family members including employee’s own health condition. The duration required to be provided is 12 weeks of unpaid leave. What the Family and Medical Leave Act does is protect your current job position and continues to provide health coverage during the absence. To qualify, an employee must have worked at least 12 months prior to the start of the Family and Medical Leave. According to a 2007 Society of Human Resource Management survey report on Family and Medical Leave Act and Its Impact on Organizations “it may create job disruptions and adverse effects on the workplace in terms of additional costs and a loss of productivity”. Its common that other employees assume the duties while the employee is out on leave creating a burden of additional work. 2. Unemployment Insurance and how it influences staffing. Unemployment Insurance was developed in an effort to prevent unemployment and reduce and eliminate poverty. Some say this system will never work like it was developed. According to a national center for policy analysis Using Staffing Companies to Reduce Unemployment policy report by William B. Conerly “unemployment insurance discourages job search efforts” therefore influences how eager people are to aggressively search for jobs...

...Bus 302 1: Compare and contrast the theories of scientific management with that of the human relations management approach. Scientific management is more concerned with finding the “one best way” of getting the job done. It has four steps that help to find the best way to get the work done: 1. One must first develop a science for each element of work. 2. One must scientifically select, train and teach each worker. 3. One must cooperate with the workers to ensure the work is being done. 4. One must make sure there is equal division of the work and responsibility. Human relations management is concerned with people’s needs and it recognizes that a happy employee is a productive employee. Both management styles are important and effective in their own way, but I believe that human relations management is integral to the success of a company. Employees do the work, and bring in the income for companies. If they are unhappy, it is a matter of time before the work is affected. Too many companies are treating employees as if they are machines without any emotions, and this is not good. Determine whether there is one best approach to management, or if managers should adopt a variety of management approaches. Provide your rationale. I think that managers should adopt a variety of management approaches. If someone can only think one way, they are limiting themselves. In business, it is important to be able to adapt and think in different ways...

...* From a management perspective, analyze the overall industry requirements and major organizational challenges of forming a sound information security program, and ascertain the fundamental manner in which regulations and compliancy may factor into the challenges in question. * From the e-Activity, compare and contrast quantitative, qualitative, and hybrid risk assessment methodologies overall. Give one (1) example of when you would use each of the methods over the others. Justify your response. In my opinion, from a management perspective, in order for an organization to implement a sound information security program after analyzing the company in its entirety, the attention must focused on the key components that influences the operations of systems and the behavior of the employees. The requirements needed to produce a solid security program would need to address “Security Controls, Confidentiality Integrity Availability (CIA), Defense in Depth, Single Points of Failure, Fail Open Fail Closed Fail Soft, and Privacy” (Gregory, 2010). With these systems implemented correctly, the results would provide a more secure and efficient security management system within the organization. In regards to challenges, organizations whether small or large businesses face compliance challenges with regulations concerning IT security. Keeping up with regulations presents many challenges to organizations because of the ever evolving IT vulnerabilities and threats that continue to challenge...

...John D.R. Leonard vs. PepsiCo, Inc. In the case of John Leonard vs. PepsiCo, Leonard wanted to purchase the Harrier jet plane that was advertised in the PepsiCo commercial he had watched. The commercial stated that customers whom obtained $7 million Pepsi points can purchase the Harrier jet plane. Leonard purchased a PepsiCo catalog and noticed that the order form did not include the Harrier jet. Leonard then began the process needed to make his purchase from PepsiCo. The legal issue before the court is whether or not Pepsi made a legitimate offer of a Harrier Jet in return for $7 million Pepsi Points to anyone who viewed the commercial. Being logical it would have seemed that not everyone really believed that a Harrier jet could be purchased. PepsiCo had begun to dig deeper into their previous advertisements and the laws that followed behind them. Once Leonard did his order, PepsiCo rejected his submission and returned the check in the amount of $700,008.50. PepsiCo apologized to Mr. Leonard for any misunderstanding and misleading information the commercial may have caused. The commercial was intended to be humorous and entertaining for promotion purposes for the Pepsi products. Leonard received a letter stating “The item that you have requested is not part of the Pepsi stuff collection. It is not included in the catalogue or on the order form, and only catalogue merchandise can be redeemed under this program” (Court, 1995). The courts made the decision that...

...Week 1 Discussion Yvonne English Counseling 6306 September 4, 2014 Dr. Gilea Week 1 Discussion Apprehensions or Challenges about Ethics and Law Ethics in counseling are put into place for the purpose of setting professional standards for appropriate behavior, defining professional expectations and preventing harm to clients. Counselors facilitate client growth and development in order to foster the interests and welfare of the client in promoting healthy relationships (AMA, 2014). The special circumstances of clients such as in mental health facilities often have questions concerning patient autonomy, freedom of choice and consent to treatment even more complex than they are in other contexts. Counselors must identify ethical issues they are likely to encounter and maintain policies that address them effectively. The high cost of care and prejudices against persons with mental illness also creates ethical problems. Two Foundational Definitions of Ethics Related to Counseling Justice and Beneficence are two foundational issues in counseling ethics and legal issues. Although these two are mandatory components of ethical functioning at any level, they must be self-evident for counselors and certainly essential and fundamental in practice (Herlihy & Corey, 2006). Herlihy & Corey (2006) define justice as “our commitment to fairness” (p. 9) that includes several issues involved within counseling practice such as the counselor personal ethics, fees structures and...

...Discussion Board 1 “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.” (Psalms 32:8, Amplified Bible). The Bible has a profound effect on people. To the believer, it is the word of God and is used as a blueprint as to how we should live our lives. Although the bible is full of teachings, sometimes we forget to lean on it and instead lean on our own understanding. After reviewing the decision Ramona is facing in regards to signing a contract with Next Step, it can be determined that God is displaying all of the signs of what she should decide. However, the message can become an unclear when $80,000 is the starting salary. Looking at this from a Christian’s perspective, Ramona should not sign the contract with Next Step because of the lack of ethics, honesty, and integrity from the CEO and company affiliates. Every organization or company has a purpose, a reason why, that is typically described in the mission statement. The mission statement helps to create the corporate culture, or organizational culture. “Corporate culture is a powerful way for an organization to define itself, create high morale, uniformity among its employees, brand recognition among its customers and set itself apart from its competitors” (Sadri, 2014). In order to create a corporate culture, it must first start with the leadership. “So he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart, and guided them with his skillful hands” (Psalms...

...Discussion Forum 1 Lude Tai Florida International University Individual Discussion Question (write two short paragraphs): Have you had similar experiences so far in your career? Honestly, I just had several months’ internship experience in the hospital and Guangdong Province Health Department. However, in my opinion, administrative staff or finance people usually don’t understand what physicians are doing. We know that physicians normally work solo, and make decisions individually, which means they usually don’t have the tendency to view and solve problems based on a large-scale vision. They also have little knowledge of finance, but they need to know how to interact with patients. When I was an intern in a nursing department, communicating with patients was a common thing for me every day. I needed to understand their demands and concerns. Better clinical outcomes would show if there is good interaction between medical staff and patients. For finance people, they don’t need to communicate with patients. Instead, they focus on the future to help hospitals develop better and make more benefits. When I was an intern in the Bureau of Pharmaceutical Affairs of the Guangdong Province Health Department, I knew that administrative staff is in charge of hospitals to ensure the implementation of basic drug policy among hospitals. I noticed that they usually got feedback from leaders of each hospital, and they checked the outcome reports submitted by...
