Choosing between a functional and a divisional organization for me isn’t an easy question. A functional organization is the departmentalization around specialized activities like marketing and production. Whereas a divisional organization is the departmentalization that groups units around products, customers, or geographic regions. There are many advantages and disadvantages in both. But I’m leaning more towards divisional for more reasons than one but a big reason is the ability to adapt to a rapidly changing environment. Meaning the longevity of your organization is maximized as long as you can keep up with the environment. Whereas in a functional the response time is slow because only a few top level management have enough power to make majors decisions. There’s always a clear since of accountability because of better department coordination. Having more structure on the product line creates a better correlation with the expense and profit of particular groups. In a functional organization there’s the problem of a restricted organizational view. That occurs when you lack a broader awareness about your organizational objectives or even your products. A job analysis is like the matching making in management. An I deal job analysis typically include tasks and duties, requirements, equipment, relationships (hierarchy/rank structure) and tools working environment. By utilizing a job analysis you can use well qualified people to bring a since of value to the work place. It allows you to weed out the good from the bad by checking experience levels to gauge who is best for the organization at that time. Planning becomes much easier because placement of the employees runs smoother when you know what to expect of them. It also allows shows where your talents lie and pin point’s weakness. The company that I work for is a local distributor of beer. This company uses the matrix structure.
