New York is home, and my dog is family. We have had our Saint Bernard, Baby, since she was a puppy. She is now 2 years old and is massive! Having a dog park would be amazing! As we have a house, but a small yard. She loves to run and play catch, but we find it more of a struggle then a fun time! Many other families in the neighborhood have this problem as well. If we were to use the empty lot that's just been sitting there for years anyway, and we build a dog park for all the families to enjoy, What would be the harm? We would bring beauty back to the neighborhood, something that's been missing for a long time! Families can get together and enjoy eachother. Bring their dogs for fresh air and exercise! Pros and Cons Essay

...Dogs versus Cats: Which Makes a Better Pet? Vicki Fournier COM/155 November 13, 2011 Genevieve Fraser Dogs vs. Cats: Which Makes a Better Pet? There is no right or wrong answer to this question. Some people say they are dog people, some people say they are cat people, and some people say they are both. Beyond the pros and cons, the decision to what makes a better pet often comes down to a person’s lifestyle, expectations, or in certain circumstances a person’s needs. Remember “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” (Hungerford, 1878) Both dogs and cats are common domesticated pets. Dogs have been domesticated for 14,000 years and cats for 7,000 (Cats vs Dogs, n.d.). It appears in my research that most people that were asked this question “which makes a better pet, a dog or a cat” replied with the answer “dogs,” but if dogs are the better pet then why is it that there are 96.3 million homes that own cats and only 77.5 million homes that own dogs. The scientists at Oxford University released a study that claims dogs are smarter than cats and The London Daily Telegraph has reported dogs have been named as more social animals and therefore have bigger brains than the “alone loving cat” (Gatton Star, 2010, p.11). Here is something to think about: have you ever heard of a cat running full speed into a glass door? Sure a dog is a “man’s best friend” and is always there by your side, he can catch a ball in his mouth, and he knows exactly...

Behavior Change Project

...Behavior Change Project The Transtheoretical Model The Transtheoretical Model (TTM) is an integrative model developed in the early 1980’s by Prochaska and DiClemente to conceptualize the process of intentional behavior change (Pro- Change Behavior Systems, 2015). The TTM emerged from a comparative analysis of the most powerful principles and processes of change from leading theories in psychotherapy and behavior change, including Conscious Raising by Sigmund Freud, Contingency Management by BF Skinner and Helping Relationships by Carl Rogers (Hayden, 2014; Hergenrather, 200*; Pro- Change Behavior Systems, 2015). Whereas other models of behavior change focus exclusively on certain dimensions of change such as social or biological, the TTM seeks to include and integrate key constructs from other theories into a comprehensive theory of change that can be applied to a variety of behaviors, populations, and settings including treatment settings, prevention and policy-making settings. Thus the name Transtheoretical (Pro- Change Behavior Systems, 2015). Stages of change It is not easy to for individuals to change from an unhealthy behavior to a healthy one. Therefore, the TTM focuses on the decision-making of the individual. It operates on the assumption that people do not change behavior quickly and decisively, rather, change in behavior, particularly long-term behavior, occurs continuously through a cyclical process (Boston University School of Public Health, 2016). The...

The angle of approach takes place when the main character talks about the ancient yak, which lived in a foreign place in which he originally does not come from. She is using the yak example to amplify her situation when she is forced to go living in the country with her parents. She felt that she did not belong to the country and she is longing after her previous life in the city in which she finds familiar and safe. The city and Central Park illustrates the beauty and the good things while the country portraits the ugly and not so welcoming environment as a contrast. Beauty vs ugly. Good vs bad. Everything vs nothing. Her father was an artist and the short stories he wrote was the beginning of his masterful portraits of the city and the suburbs. It was stories about long lost world of New York City, when it was filled with river light and when everyone wore a hat. A New House Decision

...During the 1950’s The American Dream had changed, WWII veterans returning home realized this new change and bought into the fantasy. The U.S. government introduced the GI Bill in 1944 that gave financial assistance to war veterans for education, business loans, and of a new home. This new life soldiers sought after was complete with a wife, three children, a dog, and a cookie cutter home in suburbia. As many American civilians watched television programs that painted this pretty picture, and seeing veterans achieve this life style, it wasn’t long before the country began to chase the fantasy of owing a home and living the America Dream. Limited knowledge about buying a home was available to the consumer, as this was a fresh new concept. Since this concept of the American Dream was introduced, every generation seeks to achieve it year after year. In the process much information and statistics have been obtained; and the risks and rewards have since changed. There are huge risks involved in buying a home, and multiple pros and cons that should be thought out before buying. One should strongly consider the 10 principles of economics such as “A Trade-Off”, “The Cost of Something Is What You Give Up to Get It”, and “Rational People Think at the Margin” to name a few. A buyer should compare the marginal benefits, and the marginal costs; and be aware of the strength of the economy. As I consider these factors I also look at other markets that may affect my decision, and compare different...

Operant Conditioning

...Operant Conditioning Donna Macias Psy/390 December 15, 2014 Richard Codd Operant Conditioning There are several theories to choose from when trying to condition or modify behavior. For instance, operant conditioning, a term coined by B.F Skinner, is one form of conduct conditioning to use when attempting to place modifications on behavior. In addition, operant conditioning a “consequence is made contingent upon a behavior” (Operant Conditioning, 2004, para. 2). There are two routes to go when replacing or conditioning a behavior. The reinforcements can either be positive or negative. A multitude of studies have been conducted to determine whether positive reinforcement or negative reinforcement are more effective. Operant conditioning can be applied in many circumstances to shape behavior. Operant Conditioning The modification of behavior can come about through several methods of conditioning. For example, operant conditioning is one method that uses unassociated stimuli and reinforcements to shape behavior. In addition, Staddon and Cerutti (2003) state, “operant conditioning is the study of reversible behavior maintained by reinforcement schedules” (para. 1). “Perhaps the easiest way to view operant conditioning is to regard it as a set of circumstances under which new responses that are within an organism's volitional repertoire come to be strengthened by contingent reinforcement” (Operant Conditioning, 2009, para. 1). The Human Animal Bond

...Kellie Hintz 15 May 2010 Writing 1200 The Human-Animal Bond: How animals enrich our lives The year 2003 started out the same as any other year. It was my second year in the Army and I was just beginning to get used to the demands of military life, when, all of a sudden, my unit got orders to go to Iraq. I felt as if my world had been turned upside down, and I had no idea how I was going to get through the deployment and still keep my sanity. About three months into the deployment, I was taking the trash out after dinner when it happened. As I was about to launch the bag into the trash trailer, I could have sworn I heard a cat meow. I thought, “I must be crazy!” I hadn’t seen a cat since I left the United States, but sure enough when I bent down to look under the trailer, there he was. Staring back at me was a cat that could have passed for my childhood cat. I doubted that he would come to me if I called him, but I decided to give it a try anyway, and to my surprise he came! This was the beginning of a three month relationship. I started calling him Marvin since he reminded me so much of the cat I had when I was young. For the three months I spent about 30 minutes a day with Marvin. He would usually show up right around dinner time. He always knew where he could find me, and when he did, he would come over and jump into my lap and lay down. He would sit with me for a while and I would pet him and talk to him about my day. Some of the people I worked with would come by and...

Senior Thesis - How to Improve the Environment

...Introduction The world is a place for everyone and everything to live comfortably. In order to fulfill this comfort that we are supposed to have, we have to keep a healthy environment. Everything that everyone does affects the environment, in good and bad ways. There are things that go unnoticed in everyday life that needs to be looked at more seriously in order to improve the environment. Recognizing and correcting the problem and promoting the positive aspects will ultimately improve the environment. In order to maintain a healthy environment, society must become aware of how day-to-day activities impact the environment and they also need to be ready to approach and change such lifestyles. So how can we, as individuals, improve the environment? Why When talking about environment related issues, most people just don’t care; they are only doing enough to get by for themselves. The only concerns they have are paying their bills on time, taking care of their family, keeping their job, and being happy. People are contemplating the fact that they are just one person, and the changes they make won’t make a difference so why should it matter. (Savage) If this mind set of people changes then that one person will turn it to hundreds and thousands of people and differences in the environment will start to be seen. There are multiple different reasons on why you should care about the environment and what impacts it. Approximately 40% of deaths globally are cause by pollution, and...
