...Anglo American Folk Music is considered as the traditional and typically anonymous music that is an expression of the life of people in a community and passed on through generation. Folk music, in the original sense of the term, is music by and of the people. Folk music arose, and best survives, in societies not yet affected by mass communication and the commercialization of culture. It normally was shared and performed by the entire community (not by a special class of expert performers), and was transmitted by word of mouth. My observation included listening to folk songs and stories of Woody Guthrie. Woody Guthrie was one of those workers who headed to California in search of gainful employment. Woody wrote hundreds of songs between the 1930s and his death in 1967 of Huntington’s Chorea. The traditional American folk singer/songwriter, Woody Guthrie tells stories that often don’t even appear in history books. Woody Guthrie set the precedent for the breadth of issues and subjects about which an American folk singer could sing. His original tunes often put to work traditional melodies, as well as melodies to songs that were popular at the time. His lyrics encapsulated all the important issues of his time and of America in general, in plain and simple language that put words to what so many people were thinking and feeling. Quote from Woody Guthrie: "I am out to sing songs that will prove to you that this is your world and that if it has hit you pretty hard and knocked you for...

...highlight shows. What is always thrown up on the screen is a list of stats or a highlight of the night. Sometimes they even do show a highlight of a taunt that some would find entertaining, but it just displays the lack of discipline in today’s sports. All these highlights do is give light to the athlete’s that are camera hungry and those are the taunters. I find that athletes in today’s sports really like to taunt and disgrace. Taunting is when one disgraces others in a mocking or insulting manner. Taunting is really disrespectful to both the sport of which they are playing and other team. A great example of a disrespectful player is Terrell Owens. Until he had reached Dallas, he would disrespect his former quarterbacks, Jeff Garcia and Donovan McNabb. As a player, on the field, Terrell Owens is disrespectful, too. His taunts are rude and disrespectful, because they are so belligerent and excessive. Also, In this past season he had grabbed a fan’s box of popcorn and thrown it into his face. Terrell Owens doesn’t appear to be any kind of role model at all....

...In 1985, after eight consecutive losses, Johnson finally beat Carl Lewis achieving a gold medal, and then 3 years later in the 1988 Olympics Carl Lewis outran Ben Johnson winning a gold medal leaving Johnson to come in 3rd place and achieve bronze. After that Carl Lewis said, “never again shall Johnson beat me”. By the time of the 1987 World Championships, Johnson had won his four previous races with Lewis and had established himself as the best 100 m sprinter. At Rome, Johnson gained instant world fame and confirmed this status when he beat Lewis for the title, setting a new world record of 9.83 seconds as well, beating Calvin Smith's former record by a full tenth of a second. After Rome, Johnson became a lucrative marketing celebrity. According to coach Charlie Francis, after breaking the world record, Johnson earned about $480,000 a month in endorsements. Johnson won both the Lou Marsh Trophy and Lionel Conacher Award, and was named the Associated Press Athlete of the Year for 1987. The enquiry of Ben Johnson being tested positive for drugs began in January 1989 and lasted 91 days. 122 were called to the court case, which included athletes, doctors, coaches, sport administrators and government officials; Johnson finally admitted to taking drugs and told the truth in the court. Johnson was stripped of all of his titles and medals and was banned from competing for 2 years. Johnson claimed his reason for taking drugs was to be able to keep up with the other athletes. IN 1991...

...Starting with the most important aspect of the internship, Senator Donovan was amazing. I feel very lucky to have gotten to spend the internship in her office. Senator Donovan, who is from Vail, represents seven counties including: Eagle, Pitkin, Lake, Chaffee, Hinsdale, Gunnison and Delta county. When looking at the makeup of these counties, it is a hard area to represent. For starters, Senator Donovan does not represent any solid blue counties. Eagle, Lake, Gunnison, and Pitkin County are all purple counties, which account for approximately 92,000 of Senator Donovan’s constituents. Delta, Hinsdale, and Chaffee County are solid red counties, accounting for the other 50,000 of Senator Donovan’s constituents. As a first-term Democratic Senator, this means that there was very little margin for error in the office. This also means that Senator Donovan must work a bit harder with constituent outreach. About the Office Constituent outreach in the office made up a large part of what we worked on. Although this work was a bit tedious at times, it was also really fun. Each intern in the office was assigned two counties as we were supposed to find five-ten constituents to reach out to each week within those counties. Most of these constituents were people who were highlighted in the newspaper for a...

...Ungifted Author: Gordon Korman Donovan Curtis was a delinquent 8th grader that attended Hardcastle Middle School. He was always in trouble because unlike most people, he didn’t think before doing anything he just did. Which is what caused him to somehow end up in the Academy for gifted students. Donovan he been outside the middle school during the basketball game against his school’s rival when he picked up a branch and whacked the statue standing in front of the building. The globe that had been resting on the statue’s shoulders tipped off a rolled full speed down to the gym where the game was being held. When the globe reached the gym it tore through the front doors down and could have easily killed someone. Gladly it didn’t but it would cost the school money they didn’t have. Donovan was scared beyond belief, he didn’t mean to hurt anyone but as usual he let his body work before his mind. He tried to flee the scene but the superintendent Dr. Schultz had caught him before he had the chance. Donovan was taken to Dr. Schultz office where he was questioned about the incident, Schultz wrote down his information before letting him go and he told Donovan that his parents were going to be contacted soon about the money that they would’ve owed the school. But that call never came....

...I chose to write about Tara Donovan because I find her work so beautiful. I was amazed that her pieces look so like natural forms, yet they are made from simple materials, including tape, plastic cups, index cards, and straws. Her piece made clear straws that resembles coral, must have taken a lot of time and patience to complete. Donovan must have a tolerance for tedious work because her sculptures are comprised of small materials that are sculpted to resemble nature. After viewing Tara Donovan’s pieces and visiting the Shrem museum, I realized the importance of lighting and setting in art. In the lecture slides, Donovan’s sculptures are lighted to make them look almost other worldly. In her video, Donovan say that her pieces are like...

...that is at once remarkably genuine and deeply cinematic at the same time. It’s one of the best films of the year. As he has done at least a dozen times before, Spielberg captures the arc of a man who is caught up in something bigger than himself and somehow rises to the occasion. The “Man Under Pressure” this time is Jim Donovan (Tom Hanks), an insurance lawyer called into duty by his government when the aforementioned painter, a man named Rudolph Abel (Mark Rylance), is captured for the crime of espionage against the United States on behalf of the USSR. It is 1957, and the Cold War is a constant concern. Adults still discuss the Rosenbergs around the dinner table while Jim’s children learn about how easily they’ll survive nuclear fallout if they just duck and cover or fill their bathtubs with drinking water. Donovan is asked to serve as Abel’s defense attorney by his boss (Alan Alda), who just wants Donovan to be a warm body—someone to sit next to the traitor to make sure the judicial process runs appropriately. One gets the impression—ably assisted by Hanks’ steely-eyed determination, which recalls the movie icons of cinema's golden age—that Donovan has never just been a cog in a machine. And so he actually tries to mount a defense for Abel, arguing that the seizure of evidence was unconstitutional and making the case that the death penalty would...

Donovan believes that the documentaries are becoming more popular than recent years because there are numerous TV companies tried to produce movies based on virtual issues and attracted more viewers. He states that many filmmakers try to promote pro-social behaviors by showing movies that are relevant to social or political issues. They try to encourage the viewers to be better educated on the social issues that are...

...case of the US versus Dominique Stephens, I played the role of the court reporter. In a real case I would’ve documented every word that was spoken in that courtroom. During the mock trial however, I assisted in helping the defense and prosecution build their cases. The case was tough, but having a strong defense and prosecution really cleared up some foggy topics. On June 17, 2009, at 10:32 p.m, Dominique Stephens, had called the police letting them know that she had shot her husband, Donovan. The police arrived and found her husband’s dead body face down on the ground under a blanket that had 3 bullet holes and was covered in blood. Dominique was arrested after confessing to shooting her husband and pointing to the pistol near the bed. When she arrived at the police station, Dominique wavered her right to remain silent, until the detective wrote a statement. She signed the statement and the prosecution charged Mrs. Stephens with the First Degree Murder of her husband Donovan Stephens. After confessing, however, she asserts through her attorney that it was an act of self-defense and that she is suffering from Battered Woman Syndrome. She claims that the lives of her and her kids was in imminent danger. Statutory law claims that, “Whoever, being of sound memory and discretion, kills another purposely, either of deliberate and premeditated malice or by means of poison... is guilty of murder in the first degree.” Case Law states that, “An intentional murder...
