...first name alone was an Italian High Renaissance artist known for his drawings and paintings. Raphael lived from 1843 until 1520. He along with Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci are considered the greatest artist of their time. He spent the early years of his career in Umbria and Florence, but spent his later years in Rome. He produced art for two different Popes during his time in Rome before dying at the age of thirty seven. One of his highest celebrated pieces is The Alba Madonna completed in 1509. This painting depicts the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus who is grasping at a cross being held by his cousin, a young John the Baptist. All three subjects are focused on the cross that defines the meaning of the painting. The beautiful painting is the end result of a process that began as drawings. Raphael’s normal practice was to produce multiple drawings starting with quick sketches that were followed by more finished drawings that would serve as models to be transferred to his canvas. Raphael used these drawings to fine tune what would become his final work of art. His drawings served as an outline that he could update or edit as he deemed necessary prior to producing his final painting. He would use these drawings to experiment with different positions and compositions for what he had in mind as his final result. You can see in the drawings that Raphael intended the final product would be circular. The drawings depict how he is making the shoulders of Mary and the back of John...

...Running head: DRAWING TO PAINTING Drawing to Painting Kristofer Kem ARTS/230 June 26, 2014 Elizabeth Labby Drawing to Painting Raphael has painted the Alba Madonna. This paper will discuss what Raphael used to paint the Alba Madonna. This paper will also show how Raphael used drawing as a method to painting. Furthermore, the reader will be informed on the materials he used for his art work as well as how the foundations of his paintings came together for the final product. Lastly, this paper will explain why Raphael drew the work prior to him painting as well as what he wanted to express in his art work. Metalpoint was a tool that was used in the late 15th century that many artists used to create drawings. Metalpoint was one of the materials that Raphael used for his art work. “The metalpoint creates a chemical reaction once it is applied to paper this would produce lines” (Sayre, 2010). In addition to using metalpoint, Raphael also used chalk in his art work. In the past, many artists used chalk in his or her drawings. In order for chalk to be used like a pencil, it had to be sharpened to a point. Typically Raphael would use oil on wood panels. To create paintings, he used oil on canvas as well. Raphael was one the first artists to show what kind of power oil has in paintings. This is because of oil’s ability to give off a high gloss finish and its texture. Another medium that Raphael used in his paintings was tempera. Tempera is an emulsion of pure egg yolk and water that is...

...Raphael’s Process for Painting ARTS/230 August 6, 2014 Raphael’s Process for Painting Italian painter Raffaello Sanzio (1483-1520), or "Raphael", was a painter that lived during the High Renaissance period and was greatly influenced by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael are considered one of the three great painters of their time. Although you may know Raphael by the beautiful paintings he produced, he particularly gave great importance to his drawings. It did not matter to Raphael whether it was for preparing the work for future canvases or other works of art. Raphael is famous for the perfect elegance and three-dimensional space in his paintings. He planned his art work out by drawing them first before he started painting. During the early years, Raphael used pen and ink to draw out his artwork. Using pen and ink was based on the influence by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo which both used pen and ink. Sometime during his early drawings he switched to black chalk. In his later works, he started using red chalk. He found that it can be sharpened to a hard point and handled like a stylus. Paintings during Raphael's time are quite different than today's paintings. Raphael used what was called Quattrocento painting, which was Italian and referred to the late Middle Ages or early Renaissance. Raphael had to combine standard mixtures to create colors for landscape, such as blues for skies and greens for vegetation...

...that it is a sculpture that has less depth to the face and figure, and can be viewed from any angle without distorting the figure. Most and sometimes all of these characteristics were featured in his pieces. 3. Do his paintings/ drawings have a sense of foreground? If so, how is this depicted? It seems that most of Giacometti’s paintings actually focused very much on the foreground. His paintings typically consisted of a portrait drawing of one person, and occasionally a few people. The paintings were pretty close-up and focused on what was right in front of you, which pretty much describes the foreground. 4. Usually an artist ensures that all the parts of an object are in proportion to one another. Are the figures by Giacometti in proportion, or are they distorted? Explain. His paintings seemed to be proportionate and more realistic, in a sense, while his sculpture were typically not proportionate. 5. In discussing proportion, the...

...of the first artists who exemplified the Fauvist art movement. The work he produced in almost six and a half decades is now presented in the art exhibition ‘Matisse: Drawing Life’ in the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) in Brisbane. A good example of his ability to present human expression can be found in his artwork ‘Le Bonheur de vivre’ (‘The Joy of Life’). The artwork ‘Le Bonheur de vivre’ was produced in 1905 – 1906 (wikipedia.org, 2012). Henri Matisse used many different ways of drawing and painting throughout the years and gesture drawing was one of his specialties. The main aspect that this work reflects is the human figure, which is typical of Matisse’s work. In addition in this work the human figure is shown in a variety of positions and sizes. The artwork has a size of 175.6cm x 241cm and Matisse has used oil colours on canvas to create it. It resides in the Barnes Foundation, Merion, Paris (Nicolas Pioch, 2002). The artwork was hung without a big frame that would possibly distract the viewer, so the focus is on the drawing. The work depicts a clearing in a forest with a group of six people dancing around, two lying down, and one couple kissing and there are also two people who are playing the flute. In the very background the viewer can see the sea. The artist has used bright colors that give the drawing a happy atmosphere. The artwork is representing the things that make life enjoyable, ‘Le Bonheur de vivre‘- ‘The Joy of Life’. Being together in a group, in nature...

...25, 1881. Picasso began painting at the age of 10. Picasso was a known artist and greatly known for his abstract paintings. Pablo Picasso’s painting of the Seated Bather was a portrait of his first wife Olga Khokhlova. In the first painting of his wife it showed a beautiful woman sitting on an embroidered arm chair, but after years of marriage Picasso seen his wife in a different way. In his portrait of her as the Seated Bather it showed her as a frigid cold woman with jagged teeth and a bony thin body. This portrait was made to show the tension he experienced in his marriage. “Picasso had two wives and many mistresses, all of whom had a profound effect on the work he produced during the years when he pursued, wooed and won them over-and through to the foundering of their relationships”(www.dailymail.co.uk November 19,2011 Amanda Renshaw). When Picasso loved all of these women he painted them as he saw them, beautiful, but when he became bored with them, he painted them as frightening creatures. Picasso was not out to destroy the women he loved. Painting was Picassos way of expressing himself and letting things go, just as a person might do by writing in a diary. It was his way of expressing his feelings. Picasso did not paint these portraits with the intention of them going up on museum walls. He sold them because he had to make a living. Picasso’s paintings had meaning even though nobody ever really understood them. His portraits and paintings were abstract and had a...

...that he puts into is paintings to give the viewer a feeling of awe when they look at the picture. His lines are loose and free to make you feel like they are out of control. But they really aren’t he does this to give the picture some expression and individuality. By making the lines loose and free it makes the world that we may see so much more different. With this picture this is how he saw this village while he was alive and painted it. Sol LeWitt’s wall drawing No. 681 his lines are a bit more in control unlike van Gogh’s lines. LeWitt’s lines seem to be well placed like he mathematically decided how he wanted to place the lines on his drawing. They are precise and controlled unlike van Gogh’s, the lines set these two art pieces apart not just by who the artist is but how the artist decided to use the lines to express what he was trying to get across to the viewer. LeWitt’s art seems more thought out and planned with how the lines were going to be placed. Las Meninas by Diego Velazquez is a drawing of the royal family that he must have been close to or close enough to be able to capture some great details of the family that many others may have not seen before. In this work of art you can tell that he is putting the majority of his focus on the little one in the middle that everyone seems to be tending to. Also the artist depicts the parents I believe in the portrait that is in the background. There is so much detail with the individuals in the painting that it makes you feel...
