DREAMS AND EXPERIENCES
This essay will cover two important points of Last Lecture by Prof. Randy Pausch that I found impressive, and the brief description of how I dream. As a conclusion, I will criticize myself on the basis of Last Lecture.
First thing that I learned from Randy Pausch is the importance of being an imagineer. People have a tendency to stop imagining when they start to think any of their dreams will not come true anyway. But as we saw in the lecture, even though seems like childish and irrelevant, if you try hard you can make it possible. Pausch did his best to accomplish his dreams before he died. It means before we gave up from our dreams, we can do the same too.
The other critic point about Last Lecture is, it was a pretty influential speech to encourage people to think about the brick walls in their lives. According to Pausch, these brick walls are there to prevent some people from achieving their goals, and for some people walls are there in order to show them how far they can go for their dreams. Pausch did great to break his walls that he met while he wanted to achieve his zero-gravity dream. So why do not we break our walls in front of us?
After the Last Lecture, when I think about my dreams, I realize that I do not have too much of them. Because they are keep getting true. The reason behind this is, instead of long-term, I used to aim short-term achievements. Such as; being successful in high school, being successful is university, earning my own money, getting my driver license and so on. Other thing about my dreams is, they are in a micro level. I have never aimed to be number one rather than being successful in my school. Main point of my all dreams is being happy and stress-free.
Consequently, imagining and making dreams come true as much as possible, is shaping our lives. The reason behind I am a small imagineer and I have no brick walls to break in front of me is, I am afraid of failing about my dreams. Therefore I have to create more large scale dreams about my future and make them true. Even if I fail about my dream, it will be a good experience. Like Randy Pausch said: “Experience is what you get when you did not get what you wanted.”

Personal Narrative Essay: The Experience Of My Dreams

...I sat straight up in my bed, my back soaked with sweat. This would be the third time this week i've had a nightmare. I ran a hand through my damp hair and slowly turned myself so my feet were touching the hardwood floors. I got up and stretched my arms, trying to loosen my very tight shoulder blades. I rolled my shoulders back and then opened my door to walk down the stairs. The rain was still beating against the rooftop like african drums. It calmed me down as I got to the end of the stairs. I went to the counter and start the coffee maker. While the coffee was brewing and sat on the couch thinking to myself. Wondering why I was having the same dream constantly over the past few weeks. It seemed ever since we moved to this crap town, my dreams have been getting worse and worse. There was something I couldn’t put my finger on. The beeping of the coffee maker brought me back to reality. I got up and pour myself a cup of joe. I added two packets of hot chocolate mix, just the way I like it. I sat on the couch drinking my...

Dreams Term Paper

...RESEARCH PAPER - DREAMS About a month ago the two of us brainstormed a few ideas for our first Psychology project. After a weighing the pros and cons of our options, we decided to research dreams and dreaming. We were hoping to learn some information over the vague topic of dreams such as the biology, the causes of dreams, and possibly some of the meanings behind certain dreams. Not only that, but we were interested in the different varieties of dreams people had and why they had them. From the beginning, we had hoped to answer some seemingly basic questions such as “What is a dream?” “What are some different types of dreams people experience?” and “Why would someone experience a certain type of dream?” After many hours and much research, we feel that we were rather successful in answering these and many more questions regarding the topic. So what IS a dream? Well, according to Sigmund Freud, dreams are the, “royal road to the unconscious.” Coming into this project with little to no experience on the topic, it was more than difficult to comprehend why it was that important. “They’re only dreams,” we would say, but after extensive research and reading, it is much easier to follow where Freud was coming from. You see, dreams are not simple; you have to admire the intricacy of a dream interweaving thoughts, ideas, and experiences a person has had in his/her lifetime. The process of dreaming itself connects different parts of the mind that may not be able to find each other...

Dream

...Dreams are very different from waking life, but it is extremely difficult clearly to define in what the difference consists. When we are dreaming, we are nearly always convinced that we are awake, and in some cases real experiences have been mistaken for dreams. The latter mistake forms the subject of a celebrated Spanish play called Life a Dream, and of an amusing story in the Arabian Nights, in which a poor man is for a jest treated as a mighty monarch, and it is contrived that he should afterwards think that all the honourable treatment he had actually received was merely a vivid dream. Sometimes even after waking, we may be doubtful whether our dream was a reality or not, especially if we happen to fall asleep in our chair and do not remember the circumstance of having fallen to sleep. Of course this doubt can only arise when there has been nothing in our dream that seems impossible to our wakened mind. It is, however, only in rare cases that a dream exactly copies the experience of our waking hours. As a rule, in our sleep all kinds of events seem to happen which in our waking hours we should know to be impossible. In our dreams we see and converse with friends who are at the other side of the world or have been long dead. We may even meet historical or fictitious characters that we have read about in books. We often lose our identity and dreams that we are someone else, and in the course of a single dream may be in turn several different persons. Space and time to the dreamer...

Dreams and Rem Sleep

...Almost every night we have dreams while we’re sleeping. Dreams are a series of thoughts, images, and sensations occurring in a person’s mind while sleeping. Dreams are also a result of the forebrain reacting to random activity that’s going on in the brain. Some dreams are scary, fun, and romantic. Most dreams occur during REM sleep (stage five) but you can also dream in other sleep stages. Most people dream 3-6 times per night, the dreams only last a few minutes. Some people don’t remember most of their dreams once they wake up. Dreaming can help you develop long term memory. The dream experience helps with development of the general mental abilities. Sometimes the things we think about before falling asleep goes into play with our dreams. Alcohol can affect your dream and sleep quality. Most people believe there’s a little meaning behind every dream, especially the death ones. When you think about a kid having a dream you think it’s a fun and adventurous dream but they actually have the same dreams we have. Girls have more disturbing dreams than boys. Dreaming helps the kids adapted to the changes that occur in each stage of growth and development. Some kids experience night terrors, which make the child move, speak, and his or her eyes open but not be fully awake. If your child has night terrors it doesn’t mean anything is wrong with them. Some kids have more nightmares than adults until age 8. The time we spend in our dreams shape how our brain develops and may influence...

Essay On Dream Sleep

...doesn't experience the REM, that will have downfall effect on the functioning of human body, suffering from various sleeping disorders because it is required by the body just like sunlight. And even people suffering from exaggerated REM will suffer from sleep deprivation and fatigue while they are awake. Usually, a fully-grown person has about 4 to 5 cycles of REM sleep, consisting of about 25% of a night's sleep. A new-born child's sleep can consist of as high as 50% REM type sleep (Davidmann, 1998). As I previously stated, a person would go through the sleep stage cycle four to five times a night, hence four to five dreams per night. With this in mind it can be calculated the average human being will have 136,000 dreams in a lifetime, spending about six total years in the REM stage dreaming. Mentally retarted people and people with less IQ's are tend to have less REM sleep as compared to other mental disorders. The reason this cases are still unknown. Sigmund Freud first argued that the motivation behind all the dreams content is wish fulfilment and the abetment of a dream is often to be found the day past the dream, which he called the day residue. In the case of small children they dream about those things that they have encountered in their previous day since they dream quite...

"Dream Time" by Randall E.Auxier Summary

...“Dream Time” by Randall E. Auxier Christopher Nolan’s films, Memento and Inception, both approach the question of how humans experience time. What is known as the “pathologies of temporal experience”, is exemplified in Memento, where Leonard’s head injury breaks his main connection between the present and the past, also by causing him the inability to make new long-term memories. In the movie Inception, this same idea is presented to us but in a different form. Auxier describes it as “ a lasagna of ideas about time and dreams” (Auxier, 280) and begins with firstly explaining the idea of mementoes and totems. A “totem” is an object that the characters in this film keep with them in real life and in the dream world. It is identified as something unique, heavy and that only the owner is allowed to handle. Its purpose is to provide the dream-invaders a way of knowing whether they are in the dream world or in reality. If a totem is expected to fall, or operate in a certain way, then any change in this indicates that you are in a dream. Most importantly, Auxier says that this serves as “a point of connection between what you’re experiencing within yourself (beliefs, perceptions, assumptions) and the way the world really is.” (Auxier, 282) The idea of a “totem” allows for continuity of time in the narrative, it acts as a guide when discontinuities are found. Furthermore, both films attempt to explore the same problem, the continuity and discontinuity in our experience, and...

Dreams

...Dreams are successions of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations that occur involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep.[1] The content and purpose of dreams are not definitively understood, though they have been a topic of scientific speculation, as well as a subject of philosophical and religious interest, throughout recorded history. The scientific study of dreams is called oneirology.[2] Dreams mainly occur in the rapid-eye movement (REM) stage of sleep—when brain activity is high and resembles that of being awake. REM sleep is revealed by continuous movements of the eyes during sleep. At times, dreams may occur during other stages of sleep. However, these dreams tend to be much less vivid or memorable.[3] The length of a dream can vary; they may last for a few seconds, or approximately 20–30 minutes.[3] People are more likely to remember the dream if they are awakened during the REM phase. The average person has three to five dreams per night, but some may have up to seven dreams in one night.[4] The dreams tend to last longer as the night progresses. During a full eight-hour night sleep, most dreams occur in the typical two hours of REM.[5] In modern times, dreams have been seen as a connection to the unconscious mind. They range from normal and ordinary to overly surreal and bizarre. Dreams can have varying natures, such as frightening, exciting, magical, melancholic, adventurous, or sexual. The events in dreams are generally outside the control of the...

Dreams: Informative Speech

...Thesis Statement: Understanding how dreams occur, how they affect our lives and what they mean help us grasp what dreams actually are. Intro: I. (Attention Getter) Have you ever dreamt that you were walking along the side of a road or along a cliff and suddenly you trip? You’re falling for what seems like forever, but before hitting the ground, you wake up? This is considered to be a falling dream, and ironically, falling dreams occur when you are falling asleep. They are usually accompanied by muscle spasms and twitches of the entire body. Although these dreams occur while we are falling asleep, they interpret a completely different meaning. Falling can mean you are insecure, you are losing grip, or you simply have fears that need to be faced. Patricia Garfield, the author of Creative Dreaming states: “there is some problem that is making you feel helpless like you have no support, so next time when you wake up startled from a falling dream, ask yourself what upcoming events do I fear I will fail?” II. (Introduce Topic) Since the beginning of time, people have been trying to understand the different functions of the human body, how we move, talk, and even act. Many of these physiological behaviors have been explained to some extent. However, one area of the human body that has baffled researchers, is that of the mind. Many things that go on inside the mind that don’t make sense, and serves no real explanation as to why or how things happen. One of the most fascinating...

Lucid Dreaming

...better understanding of the world of lucid dreaming and how it can be done. I will begin by explaining to you in detail what it is exactly. Then, you will learn a few of the benefits gained by this experience and some dangers. Last, I will give you a few simple steps to how it can be done. Sounds exciting, doesn’t it? I know I was! As explained in an article by Rebecca Turner, Lucid dreaming is the proven ability to become aware while you’re dreaming, to consciously “wake up” inside the dream world and control your dreams. In other words, it’s being able to do as you please while you dream. Marshall Brain researched that when you sleep, your brain goes through several stages of a sleep cycle. The cycle that deals with dreams is REM or rapid eye movement which takes up 20 to 25% of sleep and your brain is basically shut off during this period of time. Your body becomes paralyzed except for the eyelids and the part of the brain that deals with logic is shut off which is why most of the time our dreams don’t make sense. Lucid dreaming occurs during this stage of sleep with a slight difference. The part of the brain that deals with logic or the lateral prefrontal cortex “wakes up” so dreaming and logic is working at the same time. You are aware of what is going on in your dream and make what you want of it. I know it sounds a little insane but...

We Construct Our Lives

...We Construct Our Dreams Many theories believe that the content of dreams have psychological meaning. Freud believed that dreams are wishes, needs, or ideas that one represses to the unconscious. Although most other psychologists disagree that dreams represent one’s unconsciousness, they agree that dreams may relate to one’s thoughts (Atkinson, & Hilgard, 2009, pp. 210-212). Recent studies have found that dream images relate to not only our belief but also our culture (International Journal of Dream Research). Dreams seem to be constructed based on our waking lives and memories. Different beliefs make for different dream content. A study asked two hundred undergraduate students of United Arab Emirates (the UAE) and Canada to record their dreams for two weeks (Mohamed O. Salem, 2013, pp. 94-97). The students of two countries had different beliefs: all the UAE students were Muslim, while most of Canadian students were Christians. Also, there were different degree of religiosity among them. Among the UAE participants, 98.2% thought they were religious or spiritual, while only 15% Canadian students considered themselves religious or spiritual. This fact was reflected in their dream images. Few Canadian students dreamed about religious images. On the other hand, many students of the UAE had religious images such as religious places or after lives when they were dreaming. Furthermore, the frequency of dreaming religious images of the UAE students is much higher than Canadian students...
