Have you ever wondered how people with ADHD know they have ADHD? The DSM-5, an abbreviation for Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, is a manual to help professionals determine mental disorders. Determining if one has a mental disorder includes a multitude of steps, including evaluation and criteria. The DSM-5 is helpful including things like criterion to a multitude of studies to help inform about the current knowledge of the disorder. In order to understand ADHD, it is important to know how the DSM-5 is used to evaluate as well as the neurological components.
In May of 2013, the 5th edition of the DSM was released, and with this came new information and criteria. The DSM-5 edition changes the age criteria. Symptoms for …show more content…
Though the prevalence may seem high the inability to recognize the true and real impact of ADHD is higher, ADHD is thought of as a western condition formulated in response to the western culture. In fact, Chinese culture does not claim ADHD as being in their culture. Studies done in China show 4%-6% prevalence in Hong Kong and Taiwan. ADHD is currently a multifactorial disorder with multiple biological etiologies; genetics being encompassed in this. GWAS, known as the Genome-Wide Association Studies, show that no relation to ADHD and the genome wide level is present. In Theory probed ADHD has a gene association, but it is based on (DA) dysregulation theory dopamine. The medication in which is to relieve ADHD is Methylphenidate. Methylphenidate attaches to the dopamine transporter all of which is located in the presynaptic membrane, the transporter is unable to clear DA from the synaptic area due to this. The process? “Mechanism of action” the medication implicates DA, the etiology of ADHD may be the DA as a neurotransmitter. DA neurons actually travel DA from mid-brain by three pathways; nigrostriatal, mesocorticolimbic and tuberoinfundibular pathways. Inside these pathways, DA actually regulates basal gangua loops as well as cortical loops both structurally and functionally. When this process occurs characteristics of ADHD is produced due to the disruption causing motivational distraught and difficulties in one's character. Two studies involving ADHD students showed neuroimaging identified the rich in dopamine which is the frontal cortical regions relate to the ADHD.
