...perceptions about the organization. (Huber, 2010). I currently work in the endoscopy suite of a 222 bed, suburban community, private non-profit hospital. Our unit is small and includes six nurses, two of whom are full time employees; four of us are part-time. We have a full nursing assistant who also serves as our transporter. One of the full-time nurses is our unit manager with the dual role of staff nurse. My nurse manager identified the environment as collaborative in which teamwork is always encouraged, however, recognizes that unity is not always perceived. Generally the environment is positive but we often feel overlooked by the larger organization. I was able to interview all of my coworkers using the Frosythe tool. Some of my findings were as I suspected, and I became enlightened by some new information. The hospital vision statement is to be the leading provider of a care in the region and a national model for quality, service excellence, and fiscal stewardship. Emphasis is placed on a five-point plan that includes innovation, collaboration, accountability, respect, and excellence. (The Chester County Hospital, 2013). The culture and climate of our unit is described in both positive and negative feelings. The nature of the procedures we perform in the endoscopy unit dictates that we deliver care to our patients in a team-nursing model. We all agree that we are very clear about our duties to patient care. Our patient...

...“someone who uses interpersonal skills to influence others to accomplish specific goals” (Sullivan & Decker, 2009, p. 329). On the other hand a manager is different. Their goal is geared toward being responsible and accountable for the goals of the organization. Below is the summary of an interview with L.A. Patient Care Manager of Endoscopy/ Special Procedure Room. I have written down her exact replies to the questions. BACKGOUND L.A. began as a Neuro ICU night-shift nurse for 15 years. During that time she was the manager for two years and then given the G.I. Lab to start from ground up and she had no experience in G.I. With a lot of hard work and many hours, she was able to complete this task successfully. In her next position she worked at Barnes Jewish hospital in St. Louis, MO, which is a top ten hospital. The position title she held was patient care manager over the GI and Biliary Lab, and minor procedure center. She was a leader in this facility overseeing 75 full time employees, while also serving as director of workshops and training. The current position she holds today is with Moffitt Cancer Center as patient care manager of Endoscopy/Special Procedure Room, where she oversees 25 full time employees. LEADER DECRIPTIONS When asked the question “How would you describe a leader?” she quickly answered with what she thought was a huge characteristic of a true leader, and that was to lead by example. She went on to...

...several different ways to communicate: verbal communication, body language, and electronic communication. The way you speak to someone or the position of your body can dictate how a person construes a conversation. "It's more than the words you use. It's how and when you choose to share information. It's your body language and the tone and quality of your voice" (Morgan, 2014, September 3). In surgery, there are many people you have to communicate with on a daily basis such as patients, their families, surgeons, nurses, scrub techs and ancillary departments. The purpose of proper communication in the workplace is vital as misplaced information could mean the difference between life, death or severe injury. According to Hynes (2015), "Dale Carnegie was one of the first writers to link communication skill with managerial effectiveness" (p. 175). In our O.R., there are several different sub-departments besides the primary surgical department. There are departments such as endoscopy, sterile processing, pre-assessment, outpatient, and recovery. There are approximately seventy-five to eighty employees, and everyone works various shifts and days. Very rarely is the entire surgical department together at the same time. Sharing information with everyone is tough, not everyone gets the proper information needed promptly. Often the staff only receives vital information if they happen to overhear other personnel discussing it, sometimes this information is discovered only after a situation has...

...Barriers To Communication. This report is going to identify barriers within different scenarios, strategies to overcome these barriers and evaluating these different strategies. Scenario 1- you are a nurse at Stafford Hospital. Maggie, aged 60, has been admitted to your hospital ward for tests after being very tired and struggling for breath. Six months ago she had cancer of the womb and underwent surgery to have a full hysterectomy followed by a course of radiotherapy. Tests have revealed that, unfortunately, Maggie’s cancer has returned and is now in her lungs and kidneys. The consultant arrives for ward round with her junior doctors. The ward is busy and fairly noisy; no curtains are drawn around the six beds in the bay. Maggie is alone. The consultant arrives at Maggie’s bed to tell her the results of her tests. As Maggie has been submitted to hospital, she may find it difficult to communicate with nurses/doctors as hospitals are noisy and professionals may not be able to hear Maggie, this could lead to either Maggie becoming frustrated with the professionals or the professionals getting frustrated with Maggie or misunderstanding what she’s saying and this may then lead to Maggie not having her needs met. Due to Maggie going through surgery and finding out her cancer has returned, this’ll lead to her self esteem being eroded and may cause anxiety so she may feel too scared to talk to anyone. As the ward is busy and no curtains are drawn, there’s a lack of dignity for these...

...usage of equipments by other departments is also posing a serious challenge to the safety of the patient and medical staff as they could inadvertently be exposed to the radiation. It is important to educate all doctors from different department on the handling and usage of these equipments. Most importantly the patient needs to be educated on the chances of radiation damage. This can be done by conducting radiation awareness camps and talks to all healthcare providers who are not radiologists, and who have less awareness in this field. Radiation workers in radiology are well protected and safe. The radiation worker in various other departments such as OT, endoscopy room, urology suite and orthopedic suite may not have adequate personal protective equipment like lead aprons, dosimeters etc. Many other staffs like ward boys, nurses, anesthesiologists, anesthesia assistants, etc are more vulnerable as they are neither concerned nor aware of the radiation risk from the equipments placed within their surroundings. So, it's important for the whole system to recognize that all people who are around the radiation zone or handling equipment have to be protected. This can be done by providing them with dosimeters and by enrolling them into the group of radiation providers. It also needs to be ensured that the radiation dose falling on these staff members and workers should not exceed the safe limit of their dose per year. By far, the equipments used today are safe. Most companies are having...

...Abstract While attending clinical at DMH I used one of my patients to develop a case study. My case study will require me to use the skills I have been practicing to make a connection between medical and nursing problems. Some of these skills include assessment, rationales, critical thinking, and problem solving. In this paper I will go over my patient’s health history, lab tests, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and her medications. I will also provide a detailed nursing assessment, a detailed nursing process and explain reasons and rationales about my decisions involving her care. I. Health History Client Health and History: On April 9, 2014, at Decatur Memorial Hospital, my client was a 76 old Caucasian female with the initials DK. She was born in the small town of Olney, Illinois. Her husband explained that it is about a two and a half hour drive to Decatur Memorial Hospital from their hometown and this was not their first trip here. DK and her husband have been married for 56 years and have three children: two daughters and a son. She worked for McDonalds for 12 years and then retired to be a stay at home mom. My patient was admitted to the hospital based on an abnormal finding from a CAT scan. They CAT scan showed a mass in her right kidney. The patient described that she had no idea of the mass. She went in for a CAT scan because of blood in her urine and experience of her previous diagnosis of kidney cancer, and was informed of the findings. In June of 2013, she had...
