Earthworms

Earthworms usually live at or under(5-6 feet beneath the ground) the surface of the soil, they live in places that are humid, moist and cool. Earthworms are omnivores it eats dead organisms and plants. They eat whatever organism they can consume from the soil. Earthworms are disadvantaged they become prey/food for animals like Birds, Snakes, beetles and other insects, they are at the bottom of the food chain therefore their lives are endangered because they have many predators. Also because earthworms are smaller creatures and stay closer to the ground it's harder for larger organisms to avoid. Earthworms are cold blooded but they cannot live in cold weathers, in order for them to survive and move around they must remain moist …show more content…
Its digestive system runs through its whole body therefore they have a larger gas exchange surface which makes it easier for diffusion to take place whereas mammals have a small gas exchange surface area. Earthworms live by exchanging gases through its skin this is where gas exchange occurs. Adaptations that earthworms have are diffusing oxygen and carbon dioxide through their skin in order for gas exchange to happen, Worms can reproduce e.g being able separate or let go of its tail end which dies but then it can grow back from the head end this happens because they might have to separate themselves so that their predators do not catch them, Worms cover themselves in mucus which helps the oxygen pass to their blood, this helps when gas exchange occurs because its easier for diffusion to take place if their skin was dry then they wouldn't be able to breathe therefore gas exchange through the skin would be impossible because the oxygen and carbon dioxide won't be able to distribute( dissolve?) and spread spread where? between the two …show more content…
This also shows how large the gas exchange surface area an earthworm has compared to the others because it uses its 'skin' to breathe unlike the others where it is internal (inside them). Polar Bears which are mammals and Earthworms which i found out are Phylum Annelida because they are considered a different to insects, insects usually have 6 legs whereas earthworms don't have legs at all. Therefore the gas exchange between Polar Bears and Earthworms are very different. Polar bears have small ears so that it helps with cut down the amount of heat that is lost, Strong legs to help them catch their food, blubber to keep them warm in the arctic and white fur also keeps them warm and help camouflage with the snow. A polar bear's adaptations are different to an earthworm's adaptations. Their habitats are different. Earthworms won't be able to survive in the arctic because the adaptations of an earthworm is different it won't be able to find soil in the arctic therefore the worm wouldn't be moist enough to survive whereas Polar bears have a specific adaptation in order to survive in the arctic. Therefore polar bears cannot survive in the environment of an earthworm because it's big/fluffy the adaptations of living in the habitat of an earthworm.
