...Cosmology As we have learned, Edwin Hubble showed that the farther away a galaxy is, the faster away from the Milky Way it is moving. This gives the appearance that the Milky Way is at the center of the universe, and all galaxies are moving away from us, possibly due to some large explosion, The Big Bang. The Hubble's Law can be applied to any observer in any galaxy. No matter where you are, an expanding universe will give the same appearance. The expansion of the universe is not like the explosion of a bomb sending fragments in all directions. Space itself is expanding. We can detect photons that appear to have moved at different speeds through space. However, as the speed of light is constant, it is space that is moving relative to the photon. The galaxies are fixed relative to space, but space itself is moving. We have seen no 'edge' to the universe and there are an equal number of galaxies in every direction. Also, galaxies can move relative to space, but at times gravity can accelerate one galaxy toward another faster than space expands. When light waves travel through space, they are stretched by expansion and this increases the wave's wavelength, making it appear redder. Using the Hubble Law, we can estimate the age of the universe. At some point in the distant past, matter in the universe must have been densely packed. From this point, the universe would have expanded at some high speed to become today's universe. Assuming a constant expansion over time, we find...

...For thousands of years, astronomers have had trouble with questions about the age, geometry, and size of the universe. Does the universe extend continuously, or does it have an ending point somewhere? Was the universe created at a certain time or was it here from the beginning? In 1929, astronomer Edwin Hubble, made a breakthrough discovery that led to the scientific answers for the questions above; he discovered that the universe is expanding. First, I will briefly explain some of the cosmological theories natural philosophers and astronomers were able to come up with before Hubble established that the universe is not static, but actually expanding. Ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle proposed that the universe was an eternal, static universe...

...Using the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3), in a very wide-ranging survey, astronomers have found a distinctive relation between the existence of supermassive black holes that power high-speed, radio-signal-emitting jets and the joining history of their host galaxies. This meant finding more significance to the case of jets being the result of merging black holes. The astronomers studied a large selection of galaxies with very bright centers, known as active galactic nuclei (AGNs) "Almost all of the galaxies hosting these jets were found to be merging with another galaxy, or to have done so recently." Relativistic jets travel at close to the speed of light, making them one of the fastest astronomical objects known. While it is now apparent that a galactic merger is without doubt necessary for a galaxy to host a supermassive black hole with relativistic jets, they infer that there must be further circumstances necessary. Speculating that the collision of one galaxy with another produces a supermassive black hole with jets when the central black hole is spinning faster, "possibly as a result of meeting another black hole of a similar mass -- as the excess energy extracted from the black hole's rotation would power the jets"....

...Company Motivational Profile In the late 60’s, Dr. Edwin Locke proposed a Goal-setting theory on motivation. His theory asserted that “(1) hard goals produce a higher level of performance (output) than easy goals; (2) specific hard goals produce a higher level of output than a goal of “do your best”; and (3) behavioral intentions regulate choice behavior.”( Locke, Shaw, Searl & Latham,1981) When people are given the appropriate goals and corresponding feedback, they will be more motivated. The Goal-setting theory hinges on five Principles. The goals must contain the following qualities in order to motivate; clarity, challenge, commitment, feedback, and task complexity. The first quality, clarity or specificity, “refers to how clearly a goal informs the performer precisely what he is to do.”( O'Neil, & Drillings, n.d.). Locke’s studies found that test subjects performed better when given a concise goal rather than a vague “do-your-best” goal. In order to posses this quality, a goal should have a specific time frame for completion. The second quality, challenge or difficulty, refers to the fact that the goal must be a significant enough endeavor in order to motivate. Easy goals do not motivate, but goal with a level of difficulty” energize behavior, which is to say that they increase the performer’s effort and persistence.” The challenge provides the impetus, while the clarity quality provides a clear guide of what to do. The goal can’t be unattainable, though, as failure...

The studio that brought us Mickey Mouse and the Lion King had become moribund over the past decade, eclipsed by Pixar’s award-winning productions. Disney already had lucrative distribution rights to Pixar’s first five films, including any sequels, but Iger wanted something much more valuable: He wanted the practices that have made Pixar a powerhouse film maker, from Toy Story to Up. ...Mamoune El Yacoubi Innovate the Pixar way by Bill Capodagli and Lynn Jackson Through the years, Pixar has been producing both technological and artistic breakthroughs. In fact, this organization is the pioneer in the computer-animated technology with its release of Toy Story in 1995, and has established itself as a creative company (Ed Catmull, 2008). Bill Capodagli and Lynn Jackson have decided to write the book, Innovate the Pixar way, which provides “business lessons from the world’s most creative corporate playground”, being Pixar. When asking Ed Catmull, cofounder of Pixar and the president of Pixar and Disney Animation Studios, in a Harvard Business Review paper about how to foster creativity in his organization, three main points are raised; Culture, leadership and collaboration. In the book under our analysis, the same points are raised. However, the authors believe that the key factor of Pixar’s great creativity is the fact that everyone thinks like a child and acts like a child within the organization. In fact, Pixar will inspire the readers to (Bill Capodagli and Lynn Jackson, 2010): - Dream like a child. - Believe in your playmates. - Dare to jump in the water and make waves. - Do unleash your childlike potential. The book is then divided into four parts and deal with the four main components that will help readers enhance their creativity: Dream, believe, dare and do. The first part talks about a supportive organization, where leadership plays...

...Executive Summary Every human being essentially has a solitary purpose in life. We spend hour after hour, day after day in the pursuit of happiness. Somehow we all seem to be laboring under the common delusion that wealth can bring happiness. Yet the past has proven that the joy that money brings is fickle and impermanent. Our individual experiences usually concur with this statement. Assuming that this holds true for the majority of people, employers and employees alike, we have to ask ourselves whether material success is enough? Can a company retain its proficient and conscientious employees by offering them mere monetary incentives? Can human resources be stirred or inspired to achieve for the organization by something as ephemeral as money? The history and present of the business world will answer with a resounding “NO”. In that case, what is the formula, in a system driven by human beings, whose minds are swayed by objects, emotions and thoughts, to create a harmonious organization, which endeavors for excellence together? Pixar appears to be one of the rare organizations whose methods resolve this question. They have managed to attain a global reputation for their employees’ satisfaction and assiduousness. This report delves into some of Pixar’s secrets of creating an environment that is incalculably favorable to innovation. It begins by introducing Pixar to the readers and advances to an analysis of some of the Pixar’s philosophies that have contributed...

...will examine the goal setting theory. This theory states that goal setting is essentially linked to task performance. Our text definition is “a theory assuming that behavior results from a person’s conscious goals and intentions.” (Noe, 2010.p553) I will relate how this theory is used by my current employer examining the advantages and the limitations of this theory. I will explain how this theory would generate the same results in any other organization. The goal-setting theory is used to develop training programs based on specific and challenging goals along with feedback. The practical use of this theory is goals indicate and give direction to an employee about what needs to be done and how much efforts are required to be put in. Edwin Locke presented this theory of motivation in the 1960’s. Dr. Gary Latham and Dr. Locke published their ground breaking book called “A Theory of Goal Setting and Task Performance”, in 1990. (Fusion, 2011) The most important features of this theory are a willingness to work towards attainment of goal as a main source of job motivations. In my company management and employees are involved in annual, mid-annual reviews where SMART Goals are generated. “SMART is an acronym for the elements of goals that lead up to the accomplishment of a specific task. These key performance indicators apply to nearly all disciplines, including fluid analysis programs. The letters represent: S (Specific) M (Measurable) A (Attainable) R (Realistic) T (Timely)...
