...Organizational Behavior - BUS 520 May 1, 2011 When John F. Kennedy put the provision for affirmative action into effect, all of the companies knew that they could not deny anyone a job because of their race, creed, or sex (www.oeod.uci.edu). No one knew at that time how they where going to incorporate affirmative action into their business so that everyone involved would have a positive outcome. The executives at Allstate realized that in order for their current employees not to feel resentment for the new changes they were going to be put into effect, they had to come up with a way in which the company can thrive even better than it had before. In order to do that they came up with four steps that would help them to promote diversity in the workplace. Using the model for goal setting, evaluate Allstate’s goal setting process to determine whether or not Allstate has an effective goal-setting program. After comparing the model for goal setting with the steps that Allstate had put into effect, I believe that they do have a successful goal-setting program already established. Nevertheless, when you are trying to make sure that a business is operating as smoothly and efficiently that it can, there will always be room for improvement. One way they could improve is instead of giving, each manage a twenty-five percent of each manager merit pay, and why not break that down to at least five percent for every employee (Hellriegel. 2010). That way even thought the...

...Managers and employees can use this Article in many different ways. For one this can be used in trainings in more than one way, it can be used to set examples in the work place, it can be used in corporate, and it can be used by managers to increase and do research on the job performance in the work place. The information in this article can be used in a training to explain how dress in a particular fashion, or attire can effect how one get their job done. This is not something that is essential but managers can always explain to new employees the benefits of dress to a certain standard such as a white coat. Amongst employees if they do not have strict dress codes something that they can do is compare the attire of those who dress up and does who wear white to those people who do not wear white and or dress more casual. When they make those comparisons they can see the way that the people who dress up and are in white carry themselves. They can notice how their work performance is a lot better compared to those who are least dressed up. By making these comparisons they can make the decision on how they want to dress. This can be used by corporate mangers to see how much of an improvement on a companies production to dress in a certain color as compared to dressing down. They can use this information to change dress code in the work place. This...

...Summary Jordan Cohen, a senior director at the global pharmaceuticals company Pfizer, realized that a lot of skilled employee time was in effect “wasted” on routine tasks such as using Excel and PowerPoint and doing basic research. The PfizerWorks team managed to do what many consider an impossibility to devise a successful innovation from the bottom up in a big company. It was possible because Mr. Cohen already had years of experience in the company, so he could understand and navigate general company politics. Lone, obsessive geniuses may do well in a garage start-up but, in big companies, to make innovation happen, the manager first needs to embrace both the corporate machine and the people in it. On a personal level, Mr Cohen had a keen grasp of his shortcomings and knew when to recruit different thinkers for his team. He understood the iterative nature of the innovation process, accepting that nothing is perfect in the beginning. As a result, while Mr Cohen did run some personal risks in undertaking such a project in this way, he minimized the risks through a careful management of the various stakeholders and created his dream job as head of PfizerWorks. Discussion question 1. Pfizer is the world’s largest research-based pharmaceuticals firm and also a well known Pharmaceutical company. So their most of the work depends on research, developing Strategies and innovate. They were trying to find a new way of system...

...Managers and what they go through Amber Pease South University Online Instructor: Antoinette Kohlman Managers and what they go through Being a Manager at Kroger entails a lot of work. A manager must be able to plan for the future effectively and be able to predict what would be the best decision for the store and the business to be both productive and run like it is supposed to. A manager must be able to set up resources that will help the company achieve the plans that will better the business as a whole. Even through the business part of being a manger, a manager must also step up and build positive relationships with all of the workers, make sure that the workers are aware of the plans to better the business and how they can help to obtain the goals of the business. When a manager makes plans for the future the manager must analyze the current situation of the company and develop goals to help the company strive to be better. After the goals are made up then the manager must evaluate and implement a plan to take action on the goals that will make the business better for the company. While the actions are taken place on the plans for a better business, then manager must then receive and monitor feedback from the course of action taken to see what should be done next. If the manager receives good feedback than the decisions made were obviously good ones, if the feedback was not good than a different course of action needs to be planned. If the feedback was both...

...7 standard key areas: Profit before Tax, Bookings, Shipments, Returns (as a % of total dollars shipped), Rework Aging, Efficiency (net sales/no. of employees), and Delinquencies, which were measured on dollar volume and % of delinquent orders outstanding. These evaluations were measured each quarter (with monthly “check-ins”) and were highly emphasized, the most of which was Profit before Tax. Until 1987, HCC stressed “stretch” performance targets. Top management felt that these aggressive targets would push managers to produce the very best results, even though they knew that the intended probability of meeting these objectives was around 75-80%. This setup allowed managers to be appraised based on their actual to budgeted figures. However, there were two sides to these appraisals: an objective view and a subjective view. The objective view looked purely at the numbers. If the divisions Actual Profit before Tax was 60% or greater than Budgeted, the corresponding manager may receive up to 150% of their bonus potential. The subjective...

...a firm engaged in retailing and financing motorcycle sales. He was the first employee recruited by the newly assigned manager of Santiago City branch. When Mr. Cortes was hired, the branch was only one week old. Within five years, the branch had a full complement of twenty persons including the branch manager, a cashier, a credit and collection supervisor, a sales supervisor, and a parts and service supervisor. Mr. Cortes record as salesclerk was commendable and the branch manager was considering him for promotion as sales supervisor. The salesclerk’s job consisted of entertaining inquiries from prospective customers. If a sale is made he prepares the various documents required including the deed of sale, invoice, and receipt. The sales supervisor, on the other hand, was responsible for overseeing the activities of the salesclerk, the utility boy, the driver, the records clerk, the documents clerk, and the stock clerk. Oftentimes, the sales supervisor had to leave office at 8:00 P.M. due to the requirements of the job. Mr. Cortes indicated to the branch manager that he was happy with his job as salesclerk and he did not aspire to have a bigger responsibility. The branch manager, however, was very insistent, and he informed Mr. Cortes that the following month, he would be replacing the current sales supervisor who was going to be promoted as branch manager and assigned to another area. Since the announcement of the impending promotion, Mr. Cortes’ behavior began to change...

...Empathy Exercise Gina Krazer PSY/220 December 13, 2011 Mary Jeanell Buck Snap judgments have a negative effect of hindering one’s ability to foster empathy. Often, such judgments can prove to be incorrect about a person, if the time is taken out to get to know him/her. According to Bolt (2004, p. 51), “People are not always what they seem at first glance. This is not to say that negative judgments are always erroneous or that people never contribute to their own failure, merely that life situations are unique and shape people’s actions more than we know.” Almost every individual is guilty of making these snap judgments, including myself. However, I can only think of one person that I presently have negative feelings toward. I am not in the position to say that I know this person well either. She is a coworker of mine and one certain situation influenced my judgments about her. If I found that I was wrong, I would change my opinion and work to change the basic relationship that she and I hold. The circumstances that created this snap judgment occurred during the time I was training her to be a server. On the second day of her training, I had about three tables in a row not leave any tips. Since this does not normally happen, I had suspected that she may have taken the tips, because she was cleaning all of my tables. I had my general manager check the cameras and, as I suspected, she had taken the tips. I confronted her about it and she immediately apologized...

...THE MORAL RESPONSIBILITIES OF MANAGERS 'The moral responsibilities of managers, whether in the public or private sphere, generally include upholding the law, fulfilling the legitimate duties of their positions, observing relevant codes of ethics and otherwise abiding by generally held moral principles such as honesty and not knowingly doing harm.' (Teehankee, 2007) In the past, traditional duties of managers were recognised to only focus on administrative work and controlling the employees so as to ensure productivity was efficient and profitable. However, Henry Mintzberg, a Canadian academic, disagreed with the typical view of mangers and found that managers were not the 'robotic paragons of efficiency' that they were usually made out to be (The Economist, 2009), but were figures of authority that had great responsibility to ensure employees were happy, safe and motivated within the workplace. Mintzberg's book, 'the Nature of Managerial Work' looked at the different responsibilities and 'managerial roles' that are enforced on a manager today. He divided the roles into three categories: a)Informational b)Interpersonal and c)Decisional. Interpersonal roles are those important to the moral duties of a manager, and Mintzberg rated these just as highly as administrative duties. These interpersonal duties include role and moral responsibilities included being a “figurehead” for employees i.e. someone the workers can come to for help and who can voice the complaints and opinions...

...With the increase in employee theft via embezzlement and selling company trade secrets, it is no wonder that any employer would be looking for ways to control those activities being committed by today’s workers. Because of today’s technology, workers have access to an abundance of materials via internet such as e-mails, chat sites and consumer goods site. Often that companies will establish entire departments to randomly track an employee’s internet usage for signs of abuse. 2. Advertising (desire to present your product or service in the best light) The advertising manager has the distinction of controlling how his products are viewed by the consumer. He is always living on the preverbal edge in terms of he will sell or will it sell. Achievement however, depends on the ethical decisions that the manager has to make while also being able to put his products in the best position to be a success. He must often travel between product...

...IT’S MY BIKE Debbie Martin was overjoyed when she was selected the new Supplier Quantity Manager for the commercial product division of Cold Air Corporation. In this role, she was responsible for monitoring the quality of component parts for twelve production lines scattered throughout the large manufacturing plant. When she started the new position, Debbie knew she would be faced with many opportunities and conflicts. Her immediate supervisor, the manager of shipping and receiving, was not known as an easy person to work for. He expected his subordinates to have a take charge attitude and to avoid bothering him with trivial issues. What Debbie had not envisioned was just how trivial and non-productive some of the conflicts in her new position would be. She certainly had not expected to be on the verge of a fistfight. Debbie was just starting her shift when she received a telephone call from Ronnie, one of her subordinates. Ronnie was a purchasing parts inspector, and was responsible for inspecting certain incoming parts for all production lines in the plant. He was complaining that the Airhandler Quality team had borrowed “the bike” for a special project and would not return it. He reminded Debbie of his current project and how covering the entire 15-acre plant on foot would only delay completion of the project. Debbie rolled her eyes as she thought about the logistics of inspecting component past’s three separate buildings. She also realized that Ronnie had a...

...CASE STUDY - I PRATHAMESH STEEL (PVT.) LTD. Prathamesh Steel (Pvt.) Ltd. founded 15 years before by Mr. A.M. Bapat was having booming time. At that time, Mr. Bapat, worked both in the office and in the factory and knew his men and they knew him. Production standard were always maintained and labour turnover was practically non-existing. As the business mushroomed, the number of employees has progressively increased. Thus, Mr. Bapat's greetings and conversation with his workers became less frequent. In fact, he had so many things to do, that he could no longer supervise the factory. Thus, he hired another man, Mr. Godse as a plant supervisor. As this time though the number of workers increased to about 500, labour turnover and absenteeism increased along with the labour cases. The only thing that decreased was productivity. In order to meet the situations, Mr. Bapat granted substantial increase in wages which were already high and made some arrangements for increment earnings based on merit rating on seniority. Yet labour turnover and absenteeism continue at a high rate. On investigation, it was found that the new plant supervisor lacked the patience and understanding which is necessary for dealing with the employees. When something was found wrong, he was scolding the employees but no attempt was made to find the case of faulty work. Meanwhile, labour unrest developed. The ,Worker began to complain about working on Saturdays and not having either time or facilities change...
