Effective Communication Paper Organizational structure is the method by which an organization communicates, distributes responsibility and adapts to change. These structures make it possible for companies to utilize their resources to achieve set goals. A company needs to keep its structure dynamic so that it can respond to the things that impact organizational structure. The company that can adapt is better able to survive. Although I am majoring in Health Care Administration, I am not working in the field. I am currently employed by a privately owned pizza restaurant. In my experiences, restaurants are structured to have checks and balances in an organized chain of command. The business belongs to the owners and they make all of the major decisions for the restaurant. They hire a general manager, along with shift managers and leaders, to control the day to day operations. The shift manager stays on the floor and keeps communication directly with the general manager. Shift leaders are generally chosen by both the shift managers and general manager for their leadership qualities and experience.
Communication
I have been working in the food industry on and off for multiple years and it has been my experience that many of the problems that occur in restaurants are a result of poor communication. The lack of communication could have easily been avoided by the implementation of better workplace procedures. I have found that creating proper two way contact policies can help the staff and management avoid a majority of the staffing, scheduling, reservations, orders, and inventory issues that may arise.
In order for a restaurant to be successful it must have a well-practiced and implemented chain of communication between all of its employees. Having the employees learn to operate as a unit has proven to be very effective due to having the proper instruction on how to practice great verbal and nonverbal communication practices. Also, making sure each employee is given a description of their duties and what is expected of them helps aid the communication between them.
The biggest problems that I have endured during my employment history have been the result of a lack of information. In other words keeping people in the loop. There are many other problems that can occur as a result of poor communication skills within the workplace. The main issues that I have witnessed are an increased amount of turnovers in employment, a high amount of call offs, poor customer service skills, diminished productivity, and a lack of focus from the employees.
I have the luxury of working in both the food industry as well as in the health care field and it amazes me how similar the two are when it comes to functioning. Like restaurants, health care relies on strong communication amongst the staff in order for the organization to run smoothly and effectively. Having a staff that is confident in their communication skills allow for the continuous building and maintaining of good physician-patient and nurse-patient relationships. Having these skills also allow the employees to learn from one another, develop alternative perspectives, as well as meet each other’s needs.
Over time, the workplace communication amongst employees has been significantly changed because of the implementation and use of technology. Having technology has given everyone the chance to enhance the communication that occurs on a daily basis no matter what field of work you are involved in. In healthcare specifically it has done wonders. It has given us the opportunity to communicate a message to an infinite amount of people at one time. This has decreased the chances for the message to be changed as it is passed along down the line. Another perk that technology has brought to the workplace is the ability to communicate with people from different parts of the world more easily by translating the messages for us into whichever language we seek.
Having had the opportunity to work in multiple fields I am certain that possessing great communication skills are evident of a successful business. Although I feel there is always room for improvement no matter what area is in focus, but being confident in what you are doing and representing makes the best statement. I have found that I can always take away something positive from every experience that I have and I plan to continue doing exactly that no matter where my journey may lead me.

...Reconciliation Act (OBRA). OBRA 1987 addressed many physical and emotional areas, but did not include effective communication or interactions with residents. One of the simplest methods to better assess residents is to communicate with each individual and ask for their input. In a study of communication between residents and staff, Williams (2006) found that effective communication is an important contributor to quality of life, and it enhances life choices for elderly residents. Effective communication does not belittle or marginalize elderly individuals. Effective communication...

...By froxenhell | May 2011 Zoom In Zoom Out Page 1 of 2 Communication is the conveying of message between a sender and a receiver or a group of receivers. [Someone’s definition on communication]. Communication is very important in our daily lives as well as in workplace. Communication also plays a vital role in businesses. Business communication needs to be well-organized and professional. As all other types of communications, business communication also can be either verbal or non-verbal or could be a combination of both. Written communication and oral communication are examples of verbal communication. To compose effective written or oral messages, you must apply certain communication principles. These principles provide guidelines for choice of content and style of presentation, adapted to the purpose and receiver of the message. These principles are commonly known as seven “C’s”. They are completeness, conciseness, consideration, concreteness, clarity, courtesy and correctness. Here are the “seven C’s” in detail: 1. COMPLETENESS: This means the business message must contain all the facts the reader or listener needs for the reaction you desire. You must provide necessary information and give something extra if desired or needed. 2. CONCISENESS: Eliminate wordy expressions and include material that is relevant. Also, avoid unnecessary repetition. 3. CONSIDERATION: Focus on ‘you’ attitude instead of ‘I’ and ‘we’ attitude. But then overuse of it might lead to a...

Effective Communication

...Communication is a vast and complex concept to understand. It is a process of mutual participation in a common structure of rhythmic patterns by all members of a culture. In today’s world it is an ever continuous process going on all the time, from simple conversations between friends to urgent business meetings among board members. Communication is used to convey information from one source to a receiver in order to get a desired response or action. In order for information to be received in the right way, it needs to be delivered and perceived the right way. This essay aims to show how effective communication is interdependent on the sender, receiver and the roles they play in executing effective communication by the use of the skills of encoding and decoding. This will be done by defining and describing key concepts. References will be made to credit the work in this essay through books, scholars and other valid sources of information. A summary of the whole essay will be made in conclusion with suggestions. Communication has been defined differently by various scholars and organizations. William Rice Johnson stated that, “Communication takes place when an individual, a sender displays, transmits or otherwise directs a set of symbols to another individual, a receiver with the aim of changing something , either something the receiver is doing(or not doing) or changing his or her world view. This set of symbols is typically described as a message.” Another definition can be...

Leadership Communication

...LEADERSHIP COMMUNICATION 1 Leadership Communication Skills BUS 600 – Management Communications with Technology Dr. Leigh Tonelli December 9, 2013 Leadership Communication While some people may assume leadership communication does not have to be led by an effective communicator. , It is essential to know that people that withhold leadership positions in organizations need to have strong effective communication skills that are successful within the organizations that suite their positions. Public health organizations such as health departments have leadership communicators who initially, address issues that reflect the present and future of the organization to other members and staff. This is a detailed duty that needs to ensure a person is a superior communicator (Barrett, 2006). Messages that are given from a leadership perspective reflect values of the organization such as vision, mission, and culture (Barrett, 2006). Leadership communicators also focus on consistency expressed through an organizations values in which they communicate frequently within the organization. People that withhold positions in leadership communication strengthen the values and culture within an organization based on organizational values and the mission of the organization (Barrett, 2006). Leadership without good communication is a setback in many organizations, which is why it’s desired for anyone in leadership communication to have certain traits and characteristics. Agatha Christie Essay

...Essay Structure: Agatha Christie By: Nastaran Date: June 26th, 2014 The Agatha Christie essay is very organized, and carries the information in a excellent flow and structure. The topic sentences and the body of the essay went well with the thesis statement. There are several aspects that you need to keep in mind when writing an essay; catching the reader's attention such as writing a challenging question which the essay starts with, "who does not enjoy a good mystery story?" this question, motivates a reader's attention of concern. There should not be unnecessary sentences: straight to the point, but well developed paragraphs. Stay within topic, each paragraph needs to have a single idea that supports your thesis and still have excellent flow. The essay has a great introduction, it maintains the "triangle standing on its point" structure, meaning that the writer moved from general to specific. The writer went from people enjoying "mystery stories", to Agatha Christie's, "strong characters, her interesting settings, and her strong morality." As I read on I am more intrigued to find out more. The body paragraphs are in the same order as the thesis statement, each paragraph with supporting examples, details, and opinions. In the first body paragraph, the writer compares Christie with other writers, creating more anticipation for the readers. Next, the second body paragraph describes interesting setting where Christie's characters are found. The last paragraph...

Communication

...Communication is a key skill for any health care professional, but for nurses, we ‘are in an occupation that has interpersonal communication at its core. Virtually all nursing work revolves around the need for nurses to be effective communicators, whether relating to colleagues or with service users. (Morrall 2001). This essay seeks to discuss an evidence based experience learnt in clinical practice. For the purpose of this essay the author has chosen communication skills, since it is the basis for which verbal, non verbal and written ideas are conferred among the nursing staff. Some key policies and evidence taken from (research evidence or from this essay) will be identified and discussed. It also seeks to conclude with a general analysis from the overall main findings of this essay. The National Midwifery Council (NMC) (2008) state that nurses must take part in appropriate learning and practice activities that maintain and develop their competence and performance. As a nurse in training, I had been given the opportunity to complete a four weeks placement in a rehabilitation unit. The services provided included the admission of patients requiring rehabilitation therapy and specialist nursing attention. I was elected by my mentor to sit in their weekly review meeting consisting of the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) in order to facilitate my learning objectives. As a student my role was to observe how the MDT addressed, planned and implemented patient care. This was necessary...

Effective Communicaion

...Explore the importance of developing effective communication skills in nursing. Communication is the base for everything done in everyday life as well as in professional practice. What and how something is said will send a number of messages to the receiver; these messages are sent and received both knowingly and unknowingly (Sully and Dallas, 2005). Nurses evidently deal more with patients than any other health care worker (McCabe and Timmins 2006), therefore it is very important that effective communication skills are developed, as they will be supporting the patients, the relatives and then communicating back to other health care workers. This essay will be looking at the importance of developing effective non verbal communication skills, the effect different levels of communication has on patients, and adapting communication skills where barriers exist. Communication is both verbal and non verbal, Verbal communication is often seen as the most important form of communication (McCabe and Timmins, 2006). However when people are communicating, words make up only seven percent of the message. The other ninety three percent is made up by how the message is said, the tone of the message and body language (Argyle, 1989 cited by McCabe and Timmins, 2006). So from looking at the information Argyle presents, it is clear to see that non verbal communication has much more of an impact than verbal communication. Although what is said will still have to have meaning and be appropriate...

...sense a need for change when they perceive a performance gap, that is, a disparity between existing and desired levels of performance. It seems a somewhat narrow definition in that it implies all change is planned and positive and seems to ignore the possibility of unplanned and potentially negative change - for example, unexpected budget cuts. This said, most change is planned, is intended to be positive and arises from the need to respond to new challenges and opportunities (Mullins, 1996). In response to, or in anticipation of such factors, organisations may initiate change. This can incorporate both structure (hierarchy and division of work) and communication , and such change may involve, amongst other things, costs, job design, staff development and training, working conditions and new services or products (Cornell, 1996).
