Abstract

Ellen DeGeneres said it best, “The world is full of a lot of fear and a lot of negativity, and a lot of judgment. I just think people need to start shifting into joy and happiness. As corny as it sounds, we need to make a shift.” ("Ellen Quotes," n.d, para. 1). This means that if people spent more time doing things that pleased versus judging people out of fear and about things they do not understand nor agree with the world would be a better place. Ellen a native of Louisiana never would have thought that her standup comedy would lead to her being one of the top female talk show hosts in the world. She has overcome many adversities in her career from coming out publicly as a lesbian, gender stereotypes, and for being an activist in the LGBTQ community. Through it all she has always kept her quirky sense of humor and her tomboyish style.

Ellen Degeneres
During her interview with Oprah, Ellen described her coming out story she went on to say, “I think I've told you about a dream I had. I was struggling with the idea of coming out—what it would do to my career and to me—and in this dream, I was holding a tiny finch in the palm of my hand. I could feel how much I loved this bird and that it was safe in my hand, and I was reaching in to put it back in its cage—one of these thin, bamboo, beautiful, multitiered cages—and as I was putting the bird back in, I realized that the cage was against a window and the bird could fly out. The bird realized it at the same time I did, and I became the bird. And the bird looked at me and wanted to fly out, but I looked at the bird and said, "But you're safe in here in a beautiful cage. Don't leave. And the bird just looked at me and flew out the window” ("Ellen Interview," 2009, para. 2). She faced a lot of hardship in 1997 when she first announced that she was gay. Her television sitcom, Ellen, was cancelled and she lost a lot of fans and fellowship because she decided to be herself. People were not so open to homosexuality nor the LGBTQ community back then. Mostly due to fear and uncertainties with Aids and HIV, which was at an all-time high in the late 80s and early 90s. Ellen faced ambivalence for coming out as a lesbian woman in a time when sexuality especially homosexuality was frowned upon and not spoken of. Her role as a comedic talk show host took a downward spiral due to the fact that all people could see and focus on was her sexuality. Ellen made a massive comeback in 2003 with her own talk show called The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which is given credit for helping reshape televisions take on sexual identity. Gender roles for women have changed over the past half century because women were taught to be inferior to men and that their job was to be a mother to the children and a housewife. As times changed many women wanted to become more than the social stigma of wife, mother, and homemaker. This change has made it possible for women like Ellen DeGeneres. By allowing her the chance to become one of the most successful activist, talk show host, and actresses in the world. This misfortune has affected her in many ways from losing followers and a sitcom. It has opened more doors than ever such as becoming a LGTBQ activist fighting for gay rights. She became one of the many faces of cover girl and on top of all of that it has given her the strength and courage to marry for love. In 2008 Ellen married long term girlfriend Portia de Rossi in a small ceremony in their home in California. A more recent setback was the resentment for depicting a lesbian couple in the upcoming Disney movie Finding Dory, whom is voiced by DeGeneres.
Public backlash and disappointment from publicly coming out and encouraging other people to live openly and honest with themselves are just some of the barriers that she has had to face. Teaming up with Gap clothing brand, to make girl pride clothing called Gap Kids X ED, is just another stance that has helped with gender stereotypes for girls. According to Gap website, “Introducing Gap Kids x ED, a collaboration dedicated to supporting girls just as they are, whether they skateboard or dance, wear dresses or jeans, build forts or paint rainbows, or everything in between,” “We encourage girls everywhere to take pride in what makes them unique." (Miller, 2015, para. 3) The glass ceiling effect is the invisible barrier that prevents women and minorities from advancing to the top jobs in an organization. (Williams, 2016, para. 3) One way the glass ceiling may affect Ellen is by not allowing her the ability to advance in the corporate aspect of the company such as, has a CEO or board member of a prestigious television corporation like NBC. Ellen DeGeneres faced discrimination when she decided to tell the world that she was gay, when she tried to knock down gender biases, and still today because she is an activist for the LGBTQ community. The best leadership style that best fits Ellen DeGeneres are a combination of supportive and participative leader. Supportive because she is approachable and friendly to employees and she shows concern. Participative because she ask her employees for their suggestions and input before making decisions.
Through all of these adversities Ellen has remained strong. She displayed courage when she came out as a lesbian. She shows bravery as she bends the gender roles. Ellen continues to be an advocate for the LGBTQ community; fighting for equal rights for everyone. We all could learn from her character in the film Finding Dory and “Just keep swimming in the g”, meaning that through all of our test and trials we must push through; because in the end we will be stronger.

Oprah

...Similarly to Ellen DeGenres, Oprah Winfrey was also a phenomenon in the entertainment industry. In fact she had reached greater heights in her success, earning herself the no. 1 spot in Forbes’ Top Ranked Hollywood Hosts. However, despite the similarity in both women’s line of work, Oprah differs in her style of performance - Oprah Winfrey discusses serious topics, often with the implementation of psychology and input from professionals in whichever subject she discusses. Due to the nature of her show, Oprah relies a lot on knowledge, information, as well as intellect as compared to Ellen DeGeneres who’s somewhat dependent on her Charisma and affability. Unlike Ellen, Oprah has had a history in communication and broadcasting, where she had been involved in Radio and Television whilst in Nashville back in 1971, and where she first got the attention of fans on a hit television talkshow, later in ’76. With all the experience she gained from continuous work in the broadcasting industry, Oprah developed a skill in communicating with interviewees on live television. The experience she had gained is illustrated in her calm and collected manner where she presents her very well organised speech to the person with which she converses on air. After a few years of moving from school to school in her teenage years, Oprah had committed herself whilst pursuing her degree at the Tennessee State University. Oprah Winfrey is now armed with a Bachelor’s in Arts and Science. Her parents did...

...raise against them. What damages can they request, and do you think they will get them? Why or why not? 14a8b106 It is discovered that 2 weeks before the Ellen show, she had sold $2 million in JOSB stock (at a gain of about $2,200). The morning after her show, Ellen sold JOSB short (which means she was betting the stock price would go down), and she made another $210,000 in the next week on that trade. The swing in the price was not directly tied to her comments but was suspected to be a result of a recall JOSB made on their entire line of men's black and brown dress slacks when it was discovered that they had been sewn together with white thread. Ellen's previous trading activity shows that she made it a normal practice to “vigorously trade” the stock of any company with which she did business. A review of her trading activity for the past year showed that she had bought and sold JOSB stock 25 different times, including short sales like this one. Her overall trading for JOSB stock for the last 12 months was a net loss of $82,000.00. Do you think the SEC will file anything against Ellen for her sales of JOSB? Is there any cause to do so? Analyze her transactions with respect to insider trading activity (based on what you know) and whether she should be concerned. Is her prior trading activity a defense? Should Ellen...

Requiem for a Dream

...Darren Aronofsky's Requiem for a Dream (2000) will blow your mind. It may be one of the most disturbing films ever made, not in the sense of gore, but in the sense of commonplace situations that are relatable to any person in today’s society. Requiem for a Dream grabs you emotionally and gives you a slap on the face, with its intense drama and striking visuals. This is the simple story with a plot concentrating on addiction and human weaknesses, based on the novel by Hubert Selby, Junior. Aronofsky narrates the tales of four addicts. Three of them are young junkies, Harry Goldfarb (portrayed by Jared Leto); his girlfriend, Merion (Jennifer Connelly); and his buddy Tyrone (Marlon Wayans). The movie is memorable for Ellen Burstyn's role as Sara Goldfarb, the mother of Harry. Her most memorable quote, summing up most of her character: “Purple in the morning, blue in the afternoon, orange in the evening, and green in the night.” It shows that even things that are considered normal, such as medication prescribed by doctors, can backfire and jumpstart an addiction for naïve patients. Sara’s dream is to get back into a red dress, nostalgic of her younger days when she was thin and conventionally beautiful. A lonely house, a refrigerator, a television set symbolizes the empty and mundane life of the elderly Sara Goldfarb. Striving for her dream, she seeks medical help to go on a diet. The doctor does not hesitate to prescribe her four medications to take daily. She is hopeful about...

Acceptance Is the Key

...ACCEPTANCE IS THE KEY -RoMae The third sex was and still is an issue in today’s society. They aren’t accepted by the people around them and sometimes they aren’t even accepted by their own families. They are discriminated, bullied physically and emotionally and these things lead them to fear other people which cause self-torture, self-pity and sometimes even suicide. But why aren’t they accepted in our society? Is it because they’re different—that they don’t belong to the norms because God only made men and women not gays and lesbians nor bisexuals and transgenders? But aren’t they human too so why can’t they be treated equally as how we, men and women, are treated? I know a lot of people who belongs to the third sex. Take for example one of my friends and former classmate in high school, Ronel, a fine-looking young man who is a part of the LGBT community. When I asked him what the reasons behind him being gay were, he answered that it had always been in him, that he had always thought of himself as a girl trapped in a boy’s body. The same goes with another friend and former classmate, Jonas, who despite having a strict father turned out to be gay which he said that it was the effect of him playing with girls when he was still very young. Hanging out with girls and other gays was also the reason why Mark and Christian, two of my friends since elementary, turned out to be bisexuals. On the other hand, I don’t know much about the Lesbians. But I do know some people like my...

Luck

..."Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity." When Oprah Winfrey made this statement I believe she was trying to address those of us who believe that luck is just a matter of a good thing falling into one’s lap. But, frankly, any opportunity given must be ready to be received, hence, preparation. Good things happen to people every day, but unless that person is ready to make the best of it, the potential that the opportunity once had will never come to pass. Needless to say I agree with Ms. Winfrey and the intentions behind this quote. I especially believe, for many reasons, both personal and not, that people must stop waiting on things to happen for them and work for what they want. This is the only way we can truly become and create anything great. Personally, I am in the midst of living this quote. Having been out of school and working for the past couple of years, I have yet to make the impact on the world that I once dreamed of. Writing this essay and taking the previous parts of this entrance exam, I have taken my first steps in preparing myself for bigger, better, and brighter opportunities that I know are awaiting me. Not if, but when I am accepted into your school I will do even more preparation and soon my luck will change. It will change because I have allowed it to change. I will have allowed myself to become open to any opportunities I seek. Because without going to school and making the necessary preparations I now realize that I have limited...

Selfie

...Instead of hastily propping her hair up in a messy bun or simple pony, she decides to take the extra time and straighten it. She finishes and looks at herself in the mirror. Instead of heading out, she takes out her phone turns the front to face her and snaps a selfie. The word is unmistakable. It has become so widely used, it was actually named the word of the year by the Oxford Dictionary. For those who tuned in to the Oscars this year, you’d know that host Ellen DeGeneres’ selfie broke Twitter records. According to an LA Times article, the photo of the funny woman, Jennifer Lawrence and Angelina Jolie among many other celebs received nearly 2.7 million retweets. But with this revolutionary photography technique (yes it has actually branched over to the world of “photography”) comes with it side effects that cannot be overlooked. A myth that has yet to be entirely debunked is that Millennials, the generation that essentially acted as a guinea pig for the evolution of technology and social media, are entitled narcissists. Psychologists have used selfie culture as a way of proving and demonstrating these vain attributes. A search of the word #selfies on Instagram brings up nearly seven million photos, which is a testament to their use. However, whether or not these photos are a plea for people’s attention or a tool for promoting positive self-image is unknown. “Honestly, I have more photos of myself on my phone than I do on any social media site. So I’d say it’s more for...

New logo, having new logo after using the old one for long time can be somewhat refreshing and appealing for new customer generation. However what J.C Penney did was changing it three times within three year. This led to brand confusion. 2. New brand spokeperson. J.C Penney hired Ellen DeGeneres as new spokeperson, while it created the positive view that showed support to LGBT group. They may forget that one of their main customer bases are women who mostly were moms who majority are very conservative. By changing new spokeperson it created a controversy among its customers, something that J.C. Penney should be more careful about at the time of shrinking of their revenue. 3. Johnson tried to change J.C. Penney to become a place people love to come-just to come. He thought that people would show up on stores because they were fun places to hang out and that would create opportunity for them to buy things at J.C. Penney. ...Rhetorical Triangle is made up of three elements they are the speaker, audience and situation. I have watched two videos of presentations, which I will explain how they fit into the parts of the Rhetorical Triangle. The first video is Ellen Degeneres delivering a commencement speech to Tulane University’s class of 2009. Naturally the speaker in this video was Ellen Degeneres who is a well known actress and comedian. She of course started her speech off with jokes and kept it light hearted and jovial. This didn’t really show much direction in which she was trying to go with the speech, but as it went on she got more to the point as she delivered her intended goal. I feel that she did a fantastic job reaching her intended audience; they were focused on what she had to say during her entire speech. Ellen was able to combine funny with serious and even able to tie in some experiences that college students would have during their years at the university. She made sure to cover her experiences that got her and her career to where it is now. The situation of her speech was to deliver one at a commencement ceremony. The definition of commencement is a ceremony at which academic degrees or diplomas are conferred. (Commencement,2012) Even though Ellen did not attend Tulane University, but was a resident of Louisiana so the university had her deliver the speech. Its purpose was help the graduates look at someone’s path to their success through hard times and trials. It was meant as a motivational...

Deconstruction of Ridley Scott's Alien

...Ridley Scott’s Alien provides us with one of the most basic and primal super-objectives: the preservation life. Our protagonist, Ellen Ripley, faces impossible odds as a seemingly invincible alien predator wreaks havoc on the crew of the Nostromo, taking them out one by one until she is the last man (or in this case, woman) standing. In most every horror, or as Blake Snyder would call it, “Monster in the House” film, the super-objective is to preserve life. Some, however, are more successful than others in conveying that idea, and Alien is perhaps the most triumphant of the bunch. The screenwriter, Dan O’Bannon, heavily juxtaposed the frailty of man with the invincibility of the alien. Neither bullets, nor electricity, nor fire can harm the creature, while it possesses a variety of methods of attack, from corrosive blood to razor sharp teeth. Therein lies the strength of the film’s super-objective: though the alien could easily kill them all, Ripley fights to survive. Alien is one of the few films in which the inciting incident is the very first event. The crew of the Nostromo, on their way back to Earth with twenty million tons of mineral ore, receive a mysterious transmission from a nearby planetoid and are prematurely rousted from their slumber to investigate. Getting that transmission subsequently led to the crew landing on the planetoid, finding the eggs, unknowingly bringing a deadly predator back to their ship, and dooming them all to a grisly death. Well, all but one...
