Employability skills are not job specific, but are skills which cut horizontally across all industries and vertically across all jobs from entry level to chief executive officer. (Sherer and Eadie 1987,
p.16) “Too many young graduates leave universities without the skills, attitudes, and understanding that are necessary to successfully enter the world of work. The unemployment rates among graduates are the highest in the country. Often jobs are readily available, but these graduates lack what is needed to get and keep jobs. It seems reasonable to expect schools to teach students what they need to succeed in the world of work.” (McCoy, 1991, p. 94)
“Employability skills are defined as skills required not only to gain employment, but also to progress within an enterprise so as to achieve one’s potential and contribute successfully to enterprise strategic directions.” (DEST 2002a) Malaysia is now said to be at the mid-point in its journey towards Vision 2020 and is transforming to become a developed nation during the second phase of a fifteen year period. Everything we see in this world today has changed tremendously in terms of technological development, and most work needs to operate globally in order to survive the competition which exists in the world these days. This change has created an impact on the nature of work where a high level use of technology is a necessity to compete in the global arena. (Jailani et al, 2006). Hence, a more flexible workforce with advanced technical skills coupled with well developed generic skills such as creative thinking, problem solving and analytical skills, is greatly needed by the employer in industry in order to meet the challenges faced by

Assess Employability, Personal and Communication Skills

...Dear xxx Re: Employability and personal skills at Waitrose for the role of supermarket assistant In my booklet I have talked about how human resources could be managed at Waitrose, how they currently do human resources and mainlining operations. I will now assess the importance of employability and personal skills in the recruitment and retention of staff in Waitrose. I previously identified 4 personal skills and 4 employability skills which I felt were important to have when applying to become a supermarket assistant and I will now summarise them. The 4 employability skills I identified were: • Suitable qualifications • Experience in a similar role • Knowledge of products • Effective in meeting targets I feel these 4 skills are vital in becoming a supermarket assistant since if you have all 4 of them then you will almost be guaranteed to get the job since it meets the criteria of most jobs. The 4 personal skills I identified were: • Team worker • Communication skills • Hardworking • Punctual Even though these skills aren’t required since they aren’t in the criteria I still feel that they are very helpful and if you acquire these skills then you will do your job well. There are advantages and disadvantages of having these particular skills and I will go through some of them. It is very advantageous to have qualifications since it means you are educated and will not do anything unwise. Also it is helpful to have experience in a similar role since it means you...

Up until the late 1980’s/early 1990’s, most graduates that progressed from university found satisfactory employment within a short amount of time and were able to earn a sufficiently high income. At that time the preparation for employment often implied the knowledge and technical skills required for the occupation. The introduction of The Further and Higher Education Act in 1992 made changes to the funding of most higher education institutions which resulted in 35 polytechnics gaining university status. E.g. Leeds Met, Manchester Met. It was around the same time that the UK Government proposed universities should develop the core/transferable/generic skills needed for high-level employment – also known as Employability skills. Therefore higher education...

Employability of Ex-Prisoners

...A STUDY ON THE EMPLOYABILITY AND ATTITUDE OF EMPLOYERS, TOWARDS EMPLOYING EX-PRISONERS AND EX-OFFENDERS AS PERCEIVED BY HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGERS IN ORTIGAS PASIG CITY Prepared By: Ms. Marilyn Dimaculangan CHAPTER I THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND INTRODUCTION It is well known that employment is an important need of most individuals; it provides income, social connection, and feelings of societal contribution and self worth. What may be less well known are the barriers to employment faced by those with criminal record, the challenges faced by employers in hiring ex-offenders and what can be done to facilitate employment opportunities as record numbers of people transition from incarceration to the community. A great number of employers are reluctant to hire individuals with a criminal past citing lack of skills and work history, untrustworthiness, and fear of liability for negligent hiring, among other things. Employers use of criminal history background checks over the past decades and they are less willing to hire ex-offenders that any other advantaged group. Their willingness to hire ex-prisoners varies according to the industry and position, the type and severity of offense committed by applicant and work experience since release. Employers are not always consistent in what they say versus what they do when it comes to hiring former offenders and prisoners Jail is a synonym for prison, especially when the facility is of a similar size as a prison. As with prisons...

Employability of Ex-Convicts

...Chapter 1 The Problem and its Background Introduction A job is a piece of work or task that is assigned to a person with an agreed price or amount of salary. Having a stable job is one thing that every person strives for. It means having something that would help sustain not only the family’s basic needs for everyday life but also to secure one’s future. Unemployment is a stressful life event that can lead to financial difficulties, depression, anxiety, somatic symptoms, and increased substance use. (Wanberg 1999). It results to emotional health problems due to depression and anxiety as well as low self esteem and lose of respect from other people due to the inability to support one’s self and his family. In order to be employed, one of the most common requirements of an employer or a business establishment is that a person applying for work should be of good moral character. In most cases, a job applicant is required to secure clearances from either the National Bureau of Investigation or the Philippine National Police. The clearances serve as certificate of good moral character and behavior. The clearance reveals if a person has a clean police record or if he/she has been already convicted of a crime. The employment situations of ex-convicts are a different story because the certificate secured from the said law enforcement agency reveals that the applicant has a bad record on file. Employers tend to reject people with a criminal record for...

Employability Through Higher Education

Employability skills include the following abilities: the retrieval and handling of information; communication and presentation; planning and problem solving; and social development and interaction. If the point of the university is to prepare students to learn from their experiences, then wisdom is a key characteristic we have to develop in our students as they seek employment. Increasing Employability Through Higher Education

...increasing employability through higher education...fact or fiction Introduction Whether you.re a recent graduate or are facing the prospects of looking for a job in the near future, there are many factors to consider before entering the job market. Knowing the kind of job you want, getting yourself prepared for the job market, and presenting yourself as a valuable asset would make it easier to obtain a position that will successfully meet the needs of both you and your employer.
