...The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene and Joost Elffers Law 1 :Never Outshine the Master Always make those above you feel comfortably superior. In your desire to please or impress them, do not go too far in displaying your talents or you might accomplish the opposite – inspire fear and insecurity. Make your masters appear more brilliant than they are and you will attain the heights of power. Law 2: Never put too Much Trust in Friends, Learn how to use Enemies Be wary of friends-they will betray you more quickly, for they are easily aroused to envy. They also become spoiled and tyrannical. But hire a former enemy and he will be more loyal than a friend, because he has more to prove. In fact, you have more to fear from friends than from enemies. If you have no enemies, find a way to make them. Law 3: Conceal your Intentions Keep people off-balance and in the dark by never revealing the purpose behind your actions. If they have no clue what you are up to, they cannot prepare a defense. Guide them far enough down the wrong path, envelope them in enough smoke, and by the time they realize your intentions, it will be too late. Law 4 : Always Say Less than Necessary When you are trying to impress people with words, the more you say, the more common you appear, and the less in control. Even if you are saying something banal, it will seem original if you make it vague, open-ended, and sphinxlike. Powerful people impress and intimidate by saying less. The more you...

... The legend states that the widow Judith endears herself to an enemy general, Holofernes, and subsequently beheads him as he lies drunk in his bed (Artlex, 2010). The death of their leader overwhelms the Assyrians and they disband leading many to the conclusion that the widow’s actions save Israel (Artlex, 2010). This representational piece is a two dimensional oil on canvas painting that exhibits soft tones in most of the image. The deeper or more vibrant shades of red near the bottom of the dress worn by the heroin stand out against the earthy browns and greens of the landscape of the scene. The pale pink of the skin of her bare foot which she has propped atop decapitated head of the general emphasizes the grayed and dying body part. The minimum contrast, or gray of the general’s head devalues it and makes it a part of the background while the viewer’s eye is drawn more to Judith and the light to dark shading of red or chiaroscuro of her dress. The landscape behind the courtyard is soft and almost appears monochromatic; it nearly blends into the horizon. There are natural shapes that are prominent in the painting but the sword at Judith’s side has sharp straight lines and details that make an impact when compared to the lines of the rest of the piece. The calmness if the heroin and the stillness of the surrounding courtyard do not indicate the severity of what has just taken place with the murder of the enemy general. The beginning of the Renaissance was filled with religious...

Gene’s maginot line saw Finny as an enemy even though Finny claims that he and Gene are best friends. “I should have told him then that he was my best friend also and rounded off what he had said.” [48] Gene not telling Phineas the truth shows that his psychological barrier stops him from revealing his true self and creates the illusion of an enemy. He argues that people mostly believes to religious mythologies than reality. They create for themselves pleasure and pain. ...failed to take the conflict between Argentina and Great Britain seriously, when looking at the war over the Falkland/Malvinas Islands in 1982. An evoked set can be described as when elites in power look for details of a current issue that look like a past one, while often ignoring the important differences. The book’s example for this is when the British prime minister Anthony Eden viewed the Egyptian president Nasser as another Hitler that could not be appeased. Mirror images often shape perceptions while considering one’s own action noble and moral; while the enemy is automatically found to be evil and unreasonable. An example of mirror imagery would be the United States’ view of Russia during the Cold War. The psychologist Irving Janis noticed that small groups have psychologically based dynamics that challenge the rational model, which he decided to call ‘groupthink’. The described dynamics of the group include: an illusion of invulnerability and unity, unwarranted optimism, belief in their own morality and the enemy as criminal, and often pressure placed on dissenters to modify their views. An example of groupthink would when President Lyndon Johnson held lunch meetings to discuss Vietnam, with his advisors whom were loyal and close friends to him. Members of this group viewed the war effort as...

...What Hides Behind the Mirror? If you were to tell me to pick an object that represents what I am today, I would not be able to; I feel that I am still growing and developing as a person. At this point, I do not really know what I am or what I represent. I can surely though pick out an object that represents certain time period in my life. As weird as it might sound, I find that a mirror would best represent this time in my life. While getting ready to start my day every morning, it beings about the same way. Being the upstanding citizen that I am, I get up when my alarm goes off..kidding after hitting snooze a million times . I open my closet to pick out my outfit for the day, being careful not to swing open the closet door too hard and send my mirror crashing to the floor. After I get dressed, I take a look in the mirror every day. I don’t do this because I want to see how I look; it is more of a reminder that I am happier than I was a couple months ago. My forced, pseudo smile that was once paired with teary, glassy eyes has transformed into an authentic one. I don’t see any bruises on my skin anymore. Most importantly, the bruises on my skin have faded along with the puffiness around my eyes. When I look in the mirror I see self growth and progress. For some odd reason, this mirror is special to me. This mirror saw me go through a very ugly stage in my life. If you were to enter my room you would not know I had it because it remains hidden most of the time. It is only seen...

...Australian and New Zealand Army Corps landed on the beaches of Gallipoli. These soldiers known as the ANZACs were slaughtered but even though there was no hope they stood their ground and helped shape Australia into what it is today. Soldiers in the Australian and New Zealand armies had to endure life in trenches which to some children might seem fun but the reality of their situation was terrible. Soldiers were in danger constantly whether it be to enemy soldiers or to sicknesses that came from trenches. Shifts had to be taken to keep order and dogs were also brought which were good for keeping the spirits of the men up. As such life in these trenches was much harder than it would seem. The trenches lived in were long and narrow leaving not much space to manoeuvre, these trenches were dug out and lined with sand bags for the protection of the soldiers. Sand bags were good because they were able to endure hits from bullets without taking much knockback which proved quite helpful in enemy attacks. Though these trenches were well protected from enemy soldiers, sicknesses were a whole other...

"I can't believe you haven't seen through all this crap yet, Ender... These other armies, they aren't the enemy. It's the teachers, they're the enemy. ...RELATIONSHIPS - PART ONE: UNDERSTANDING WHO YOU ARE Most of us have learned Bible teaches us mainly about two things.... 1. The first is our relationship with God. 2. The second is our relationship with one another. Every book in the bible deals with these two relationships. Almost everything that I talk about from this pulpit concerns our relationship with God. That is a good thing to talk about! Tonight though, I want to begin a new series concerning our relationship ourselves and with others. We are going to address relationships that deal with the husband, the wife, friends, and family, communication...but I want to begin this series tonight by talking about understanding yourself! The first key to understanding yourself is to understand... * Who you are. * Where you come from. * Where you are going. * What is your purpose. ...before you can be successful in any relationship...you must be able to understand yourself! Before you can be successful in your relationship with God you must be able to understand yourself! Tell the person next to you..."I am about to find out who I am." The bible says.... James 1:17-18 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. 18 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. James, Jesus half brother, wrote...

As Kelley said in the book, “Those three weeks before he left for boot camp, there was something different about Adam...There was an intensity. A focus.” (Blehm 100) When Kelley announced to Brown that she was pregnant in the middle of him training in BUD/S to become a Navy SEAL, it did not discourage him. Rather, it made him even more focused to succeed; “Okay, this just makes it even more important...I have to get through BUD/S,” he said after hearing the news (Blehm 111). According to Chief Harley, a prestigious DEVGRU operator who worked with Brown, “Adam had that rare ability to go from looking in the mirror and laughing at himself to being the cool-headed professional, the one person I’d choose to have beside me if I was surrounded by enemy and running out of ammunition.” (Blehm...
