I am in my fourth semester at Bunker Hill Community College in Business major. I have been in the U.S. since December 2015. Like any immigrant, I know I will face lots of challenges that I am determined to overcome through education. I took the Accuplacer Placement test in the summer 2016 and got into BHCC English 111 in fall 2016. In the beginning, it was tough for me as English 111 was my first class in college. For my first paper, I got a D, and I was thinking about dropping all the classes as English 111 was required for all of them. I was a rough day for me. I left BHCC that day without taking my second class. When I reached home, I told myself I am a fighter; I can't give up. I started to feed my mind with positive thinking and was

It is impossible to spend sufficient time on the works we will be exploring within the bounds of class-time, so you will be required to spend time reading and writing on your own; this is a practice that will enable you to bring your personal experiences with these works to our discussions in class and participate in an engaged way as part of our community of learning. But our community of learning is broader than the classroom—it also includes the community organizations you will be partnering with for your service-learning. We will be investigating and interrogating a versatile metaphor—cultivation—and how it impacts the cultures and communities in which we live...

Protofeminism

...‘A serious proposal to the ladies’ and ‘Some reflections upon marriage’ deal with the social problems that women had to live with at the time, and how they were constantly subdued by men. Being considered mentally and socially inferior, Astell argued that this social ranking between the sexes was unjust and unnatural. However, ‘Custom’, (or tradition) considered it for some time normal for a woman to be under the dominance of Man at all times. Astell tried arguing against this, as her protofeminist pieces were one of the first works which dealt with the matter head on. She fought for equality between the sexes, and questioned the morals behind believing women to be inferior to men. Many would be able to compare her to ‘The New Woman’; an image created in order to describe the modern feminist woman that was being introduced to society in the late 19th century. However, many would argue that, although Astell was a leading feminist of her time, as she was considered “The first major English feminist for her defiant praise of women” by Joan K. Kinnard, she was still strongly conservative and some of her views differed from the modern feminist ones of today. She still considered a woman to have her rightful place or role in the household and in society, and believed that a social ranking was simply inevitable and a ‘work of God’; so many of these beliefs were directed at the upper class and richer women of the time. In ‘Some reflections upon marriage’, Astell describes men as being...

...Article Reflection It has been debated that children that grow up in different countries or places where the dialect, or the way they speak is different than the customary school English have more difficulty with reading acquisition. These children have been taught dialects such as African American Vernacular English (AAVE). The dialect of African American Vernacular English is very similar to that of school English except for a few differences. Some of these differences include the reduction of final consonants. For example, /mos/ vs /most/ for the word most. Another example is the use of stops or labiodental fricatives where school English has interdental fricatives such as (/dis/ vs. /ðis/ for this, /bof/ or /bot/ vs. /boθ/ for both) are acceptable in AAVE but are not acceptable in school English. To test this hypothesis, sentence imitation and reading skills of 217 urban African American boys and girls in kindergarten through second grade from the ages of 5 to 8 were selected from low-performing schools in low-income communities in three U.S. cities. The cities consisted of, Cleveland, Ohio; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Washington, D.C. The children that were chosen in each grade were scattered and random pertaining to their imitations of school English sentences which included phonological and grammatical forms that are used in African American Vernacular English but not in school English. The experiment consisted of several different tools that helped the researchers test...

9/11 Summary And Analysis

...When UNC freshman Alec Dent reported on the English 72: Literature of 9/11 course, saying its material “painted terrorists in a sympathetic light,” despite Dent having never read any of the course’s books or even attending one of the classes, that was bad. When Heather Childers of the show Fox and Friends: First called out the class solely for its assigned books without mentioning any of its activities, including class discussions on the 9/11 Commission Report and watching the movie “Zero Dark Thirty,” that made matters worse. But the most unfortunate moment of this episode was when the UNC College Republicans, under its chairman Frank Pray, started a petition asking Chancellor Carol Folt to condemn the course, saying the readings “justify terrorism” and “desecrate the victims of the September 11 attacks.” Of course, the College Republicans followed this by boasting how proud the group was of one of the club’s newest members,...

Professional Journal in Nursing

...[pic] Profesional journals are peer-reviewed, checked for factuality, consistency, citing relevant work, and drawing appropriate conclusions supported by the data. The concept of profesional journal as a means of developing reflective practice has become a popular topic in classrooms, professional journals, conferences, and continuing education programs (Boud & Walker, 1998). Many other names for profesional journal appear in nursing literature, including log, journaling, narrative pedagogy, dialogue journals, reflective practice, and reflective writing. Whatever people says, reflective profesional journal requires writing, a great deal of it. However, journals are an integral part of the teaching/learning in many nursing programs as well as in allied health programs and education in general. The purpose of this essay is to review the literature related to profesional journal and reflective practice and how it can be beneficial in the teaching/learning process. Reflective practice is a means of self-examination that involves looking back over what has happened in practice in an effort to improve performance or to encourage professional growth (Ruth-Sahd, 2003). ...GCSE English Language 2010 Studying Spoken Language The newest and potentially most exciting area of the new GCSE specifications is the Studying Spoken Language section of the Controlled Assessment for GCSE English Language. The focus of this unit is investigative, asking candidates to explore their own spoken language and/or that of others, including perhaps spoken language in media and technologies such as internet messaging services. Sample Controlled Assessment tasks are available online so that you can see the type of tasks that will be set. All of the tasks are fairly open-ended so that you can help individual students tailor their research to suit their interests and the type of data available to them. One of the teachers who has done a trial of the new unit said, ‘the tasks were greeted with enthusiasm and the ability to connect what we were exploring to the wider context. The tasks lead to independent study which meant there was a good deal of ownership for the students.’ 8 Teachers who have trialled the unit have given us some very useful feedback on which we can base further support. One important point is that giving enough time and thought to the initial data collection pays dividends in terms of the level of analysis which students can carry out. The script and commentary on the following pages are examples of the further resources you can see online at http://web.aqa.org.uk/englishLangA These are provided to demonstrate ways...

Reflection

...Tarik Slimani 11/05/2014 ROCI4485 Section 02 Community Involvement Interim Reflection #3 LOG: * The date: 4th Week of October. * Location: Children’s learning center. * Short Description: Assistant teacher (helping the teacher to take care of the kids). Mini-Reflection: During the 4th week of October, I decided to volunteer for the center of international programs since I am an international student. I worked with some international students that I’ve already met before and some other American students, everyone was motivated and ready to help this event. I had the task to promote studying abroad for Shawnee state students and invite people to lectures, lunches, and parties during the international week. I was surprised that a lot of people were scared to study abroad for many reasons. The most common reason was the price and the language. I explained to them that Shawnee State University had sister universities all over the world, that means that you pay the tuition, housing, and meals in USA before leaving for the same price. Akhawayn university is a sister university in my country Morocco where I studied for two years, so I gave a lot of information for students about the college where they can study all courses in English, and about the unique location of morocco in Africa and a couple miles away from Europe. I felt really comfortable in what I’m doing and I decided to attend all the lectures even if it was not counted in my community service. This experience...
