...Final Reflection My main aim in enrolling in the English 120 online course was to improve my writing skills. I strongly believe that I have achieved that purpose. While comparing the first draft of my Essay#1 to how I tackle an essay on the same topic now, I can see the almost meteoric improvement that I have achieved so far.In addition, I am proud of the skills I have learnt from this course. In fact, I believe that my achievements so far have superseded my expectations. I hope that whatever I have learnt in this course will form the basis for future improvements, and I will be able to make further strides in creative and scientific writing. While taking the English 120 online course, my attitude towards reading as well as writing has transformed drastically. For instance, after taking the course, I have learnt to look at issues in depth, instead of dealing with them superficially. In addition, the course has instilled in me a healthy appetite for reading and doing extensive research on a specific topic. Moreover, after the course, I have also started to read more in order to improve my vocabulary. I believe that this will help in my future endeavors....

...Being brought up speaking English, I always thought I spoke and understood English just fine. Who would of thought that it was such a complex subject. From my last English class, passing without any issues, to this English class, which has been a huge struggle. I have found that I have been challenged during this semester, its been a love/hate relationship between me and English 120. This class has given me greater knowledge when it comes to understanding "why" the author is writing their article, its not just about summarizing what you read, its about fully grasping the complexity of the article. I know that because I have been challenged, and learned to overcome the challenge of writing rhetorical strategies, it is safe to say, that I am read to enter English 124. This paper will illustrate my understanding of English 120 and why I, Michelle Page, feel I am ready to move on to English 124. Let me start with the first paper we wrote in this class, it was an Argument Analysis Essay and I chose to write it on Carol...

...Next, let’s move to response to recommendations. The executive team gives three main problems, which are SkyWest Reliance on United and Delta for its customers and revenue, Atlantic Southeast Airline’s poor customer service, and SkyWest has High Operating Costs as compared to competitors. However, the executive team just focuses on first two of them and gives the recommendations. The first recommendation is try to acquire contracts with low-cost providers, such as Southwest and JetBlue. We are agreeing with this recommendation. Because, if SkyWest only rely on United and Delta, it will increase their financial risk, assume one of them have a financial or managerial problem, the SkyWest will have a hard time, and that not only will affect their total revenue, but their public reputation and the power of competitive in this market. Also, only have United and Delta will limited the resource of income; therefore, find some more copartner is reasonable, but due to the SkyWest’s financial situation, the low-cost providers can be on the list. However, the question is whether Southwest and JetBlue, they are individual company, and they doing well on their business, so why they will come to SkyWest? What benefit that SkyWest can provide to those companies due to their current finical situation or the future years? We need more detail. The second recommendation is SkyWest share customer service strengths with ASA. And we agree with this recommendation. For any customer, when they...

...English Should be the Only Language Immigration, legal or not, has been a problem for the United States for a long time. In the U.S., promoters of bilingualism have supported the use of other languages for public services, including government documents, hospitals services, voting ballots, and bilingual education. In their essays “A Nation Divided by One Language” and “Viva Bilingualism”, James Crawford and James Fallows claim that it is not necessary to declare English the official language of the U.S. On the other hand, in their essays “English Should Be the Only Language” and “Why the U.S. Needs an Official Language”, S. I. Hayakawa and Mauro E. Mujica argue that English should be made the official language. They contend that multilingualism puts a large financial burden on the country. One specific service in which the cost outweighs the benefits is bilingual education. It is teaching non-English speaking students all school subjects in their native language. However, it lowers the standards for public schools and tends to create a segregated environment for the students. They also point out that the U.S. is a leading nation and English is the most used language in the world. Not forcing immigrants to learn English will actually impede upon their assimilation into America. Without correcting this problem, America will suffer from disunity and divergence. Multilingual government is very expensive. More than 120 multiple languages are spoken throughout the states. To support...

...1) Describe someone in this class BUT do not give his/her name. (120 words) I met him a little late, not like the others because he registered himself in UiTM a week after the official registration day. It is just a normal Wednesday when we are in the Safety and Health Class by Sir Kamal, he entered the class rushingly, and sat beside me. He asked me to confirmed whether he is in the class AP246 2B and we started talking softly while Sir Kamal was in front of us, briefed us the scope of the subject, Safety and Health in Construction Management. We have been friends ever since, he got that typical malay look, with dark brown skin, short and wavy black hair. Like many students here in Uitm, he likes to wear a collared t-shirt, sometimes it blends with his red and black backpack. He is friendly and very outgoing, however, he can be a little bit immature at times. For an example, he likes to ask or give an inappropriate questions and answers to the lecturers. Whatever it is, I'm happy to have him as my new friend because our class doesn't have enough man in it ! Answer : 2) Why is it important to know English grammar ? It is very important to know and master the English grammar, it is because English is the most widely used language in the whole wide world both written and verbal. For me, that is the main reason why it is so important. In Malaysia, English can be consider as our second language after Bahasa but it has become the key to be effective...

...HR Research Methods – Final Exam, Winter 2015 STUDENT NAME: Peter Stojanov SummerPops SummerPops is a Popsicle manufacturer based in Montreal, Quebec, and has been operating since its founding in 1919. SummerPops moved into a large manufacturing facility in southeast Montreal in 1925, and has stayed in the building (with renovations and upgrades) ever since. The facility contains 4 major sections critical to the success of the business: * traditional loading docks to receive incoming raw materials, notably sugar; * mixing vats, water pipes, and heaters to create the liquid solution for the popsicles; * large freezers, to cool the liquid solution and form the popsicles; and * cold loading docks, to move the frozen popsicles to freezer trucks for transportation to stores. SummerPops is a unique company, in that 5 months of the year (November to March), the entire production facility is shut down. SummerPops quickly discovered trying to maintain operations through the winter months was pointless, as few people bought their products during frigid Quebec winters. As such, these shutdown provisions mean that employees cling even harder to their unions and their seniority, in order to ensure they maintain predictable employment with the company when they start their jobs again each March. March represents the "start up" month, where the entire facility is de-winterized, cleaned, sterilized, and tested to ensure full operational capacity. Starting in April...

...Cachau Bant: Mind Your Language Back in the days when the British Empire ruled, the English language spread all across the world forcing a lot of people to take upon English if they wanted better in life. Because of English being one of the most dominant languages in the world, a lot of native languages were lost a long the way - one of those languages being Welsh. Why and how this happened to particular Welsh is what Tom Law discusses in his article Cachau Bant: Mind Your Language from 2013. In this article Tom Law accuses the British Empire for being the cause of the people living in Wales and speaking Welsh dropping drastically during the last couple of 100 years. The cause of this being that England took over the Welsh school system and made teaching English a first priority and Welsh was being taught like German or French is taught in schools nowadays. "[Welsh] was treated the same as any other foreign language – like French or German. It gave you tourist Welsh – enough to ask directions to the nearest zoo in Colwyn Bay – and not much else.” Frustrated with how people today react when hearing about the Welsh losing their native language, Law makes up a fictional scenario where everybody speaks German instead of English. The people who still speak English are considered as being dumb or poor, and with no job prospects if you cannot speak German. Law does admit that this is a rather drastic example, “Now this all sounds absolutely nuts (…) But this is what has happened to...

...Article Review For my Article Review I decided to read, Is CALL Obsolete? Language Acquisition and Language Learning Revisited in a Digital Age by Huw Jarvis and Stephen Krashen. Computer-Assisted Language Learning or CALL for short has become an ever expanding. CALL was created to help people learn different languages with the use of computers. It came about in the 1960's before much was known about how we learn different languages. I think this seemed like a good idea at the time, but the creator just did not have enough data on how humans learn new languages. Now fifty years later different methods and practices of it have helped more people to better understand languages that are new to them. When CALL was first created it used a method that like I said seemed a good idea, but did not help people grasp languages that were new to them. The method that was used was more of a read and repeat method. We now know that while this method may have aided in language learning, it did not contribute to language acquisition. The Merriam Webster dictionary defines acquisition as "the act of getting or acquiring something: such as the act or process of gaining skill, knowledge, etc". This means that you can read and repeat all you want, but you are not gaining the skill or full knowledge of this new language. When learning a new language we also need understanding. According to Krashen, 2003, 2001, "we acquire language and develop literacy primarily from understanding what we read...

...One of the most famous leaders he executed was Sir Thomas More. Much of the drama of Henry’s reign was caused by his need for a male heir to succeed him from the throne. His first marriage, to his brother’s widow, Katharine of Aragon, lasted over twenty years but she only conceived one surviving daughter. In order to marry again to achieve his goal for a male hair Henry eventually had to reject papal authority in England. He named himself supreme head of a new English church. This decision forever changed English history. It threw the English people into a social and religious up rising because of this decision. He remains one of the most famous and influential kings in English history today because of the English reformation. The English reformation is the process of transforming England from a Catholic country to a Protestant one. The Roman Catholic faith believed in marriage for life. It did not support divorce. Those who were widowed were free to re-marry. Husbands like Henry could not simply decide that their marriage was not working, divorce their wife and re-marry. The Roman Catholic Church did not allow it. For someone like...

...Cachau Bant: Mind Your Language Through many years Great Britain has reigned and has been invincible, but on the cost of other people’s nativity. English became a widespread language, and everyone had to follow up. Which included the fall of other language and lives as they knew it. Soon everything they had known and built would be torn down, to build something knew. This resulted in feelings of mistreat, inequality and injustice. But are you supposed to just accept these changes, and abide the new rules? This is what Tom Law debates in his Article “Cachau Bant: Mind Your Language” from Sabotage Times website, December 17, 2013. This text centres about the fact that Britain has removed Welsh as the common language in Wales, and forced the English language on the people of Wales. This is of great disappointment for the writer Tom Law, even though he himself was born into the English Wales. Tom Law tries to create a picture for the reader, on how it would be if other countries experienced the same thing that happened to Wales, because ironically enough, England would never accept that kind of treatment. In his article, he uses history as a form of logos, given that the occurrence of what he is debating, has happened before. To do this, he has created to different kinds of parallels, or comparisons, to explain to the reader the dilemma that has happened in Wales. Firstly, he speaks of the time where Germany was on the edge of invading every single country with their language...

With limited lexical knowledge, learners tend to use common emotion words such as angry and happy to describe their feelings. Moreover, the learner’s first language seems to lead to inappropriate word choices. Many learners consult the thesaurus for synonyms of emotion words; typically, the synonyms suggested come with little or no definition or usage information. The contextual information is taken in to account of suggested synonms .As a result, the thesaurus does not always help language learners select appropriately nuanced emotion words, and can even mislead learners into choosing improper words that sometimes convey the wrong message.
