In society many people aged 21 and up drink alcohol. Lowering the legal drinking age to 18 would be morally irresponsible. At the age of 18 you are not very mature, you can be vulnerable to using illicit drugs, and alcohol can have negative impacts on one’s health.
First, lowering the legal drinking age to 18 is not a good idea because it is morally irresponsible. When you are 18 you tend to be less responsible and less mature than you are at the age of 21. With age comes maturity.
Second, lowering the legal drinking age to 18 is not a good idea because alcohol could potentially lead to the use of other drugs. When drinking alcohol and becoming intoxicated you tend to not think as clearly as you would being sober. This may cloud your judgment and allow you to make choices one would normally not make if not drunk.
Third, lowering the legal drinking age to 18 is not a good idea because it would be medically irresponsible. At the age of 18 your brain is still developing. Introducing alcohol at this point could have grave results such as; memory loss, vulnerability to addiction, and risk taking behavior. It is also known that alcohol is a depressant, with this could come depression and the potential of suicide is greater.
Although the legal drinking age of 21 has not stopped teen drinking even provoking underage binge drinking into more private and uncontrolled environments it is important we do not legalize drinking at the young age of 18. It is clear that there are more risks than benefits in doing

English Argumentative Essay

...From the character's inexperience with love and Friar Lawrence's interference with their love for each other in “The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet” those are the things that caused the end of Romeo and Juliet. When Friar Laurence let them get married without consent of their parents. Another way is that when Juliet drank the sleep potion which ultimately led up to the death of both of them. Some people might think that instead of the characters inexperience, people think that it was the fate and chance of Romeo and Juliet that led up to the death of both of them. They're plenty of reasons why the character's inexperience with love caused the death of Romeo and Juliet. One of the things that lead up to their death is when Romeo fought Tybalt and killed him Tybalt:”Thou, wretched boy, that didst consort him here, Shalt with him hence.” Romeo:” This shall determine that” (3.1.91-92). The reason why this is such a big deal with the death is because I feel that this is what cause Juliet to do the Things that she does. This all starts with the banishment of Romeo from Verona. This one action lead to Juliet doing all these crazy things like drinking the sleeping potion and fooled everyone around her “Farewell!-God knows when we shall meet again....... Romeo, Romeo, Romeo! Here's drink. I drink to the.” (4.3.14-60) The reason why she drank the sleep potion is because she thought that when she woke up she could run away with Romeo. That did not happen, Romeo found out about the...

My Essay In English 3000.01 Class

...pass this English 3000.01 class for that I have learned a lot in writing essays. I have learned to use subordination and coordinating conjunctions in my essays when I never thought of using them before and I have become more proficient in preventing fragment and run-ons sentences and I have learned to write a great complete argumentative essay. I have learned to use subordination and coordinating conjunctions in my essays when I never thought of using them before. I have learned to use subordinating conjunctions that introduces a dependent clause by joining it to a main clause. Words like because, when, if and more that help build a sentence better. I even learned that coordinating conjunctions are joining two similarly constructed words or phrases within a sentence. Words like for, or, yet, and more that help in a sentence. I have uses both coordinating and subordination conjunctions in my papers. One sentence that I used a subordinating conjunction “People need to understand that there are people out in our world who do not care about their privacy, when they post everything online” (Gallego) and I used a coordinating conjunction in this paragraph “Think about the idea that everyone achieved a college degree, for all people would be equal in...

My Progress in Writing

...Prof. Nelson English 49 09 May 2012 As a non-native speaker who immigrated to the U.S. two years ago, English is a big obstacle for me in communication. I have had many difficult times speaking and understanding English when talking to others. Writing an essay was almost impossible for me to think of. Realizing how difficult it was to experience these linguistic difficulties, I then decided to go back to school to improve my English skills. Therefore, English became especially essential for me to succeed in my educational goals. I was determined to earn an Associate’s degree then transfer to a university for a Bachelor’s degree. I started going to ESL classes and studied English very hard to make progress in my speaking, reading and writing skills. After spending one year in ESL classes, I qualified for English 43. I learned lots of grammar and how to write paragraphs efficiently during these classes. I noticed that writing an essay was more challenging when I got into English 49. However, since then I’ve learned how to write a five-paragraph argumentative essay which was one of my weaknesses in academic writings. I have made a lot of progress in writing skills since I started studying English 49. I now think that I’m ready to go on to English 101 due to the fact that I have learned useful strategies to follow a writing process and develop coherent paragraphs effectively. A writing process is the most important step that I learned in this class. First of all, before...

English 102 Class Reflection

...Throughout the course of my English 102 class, there have been many attributing factors that have not only geared me toward meeting the course objectives but have challenged and strengthened my analytical and critical thinking skills. My portfolio highlights these acquired skills through two outside of class essays, which required two completely different styles of writing. Another key element that has helped to illustrate the writing process for the two essays in my portfolio was the use of reading various types of literature. This included but was not limited to, editorials, newspaper articles, books, and specific disciplines of research in course related fields. These two essays essentially reshaped my ability to write for specific audiences...

Argumentative Researc

...h essay Argumentative Research Essay Introduction Description When you write an argumentative essay, you investigate a controversial issue (considering both sides), determine which side you favour, and argue using evidence and examples both to support your claims and to refute counter-arguments. A controversial (or contentious) issue is one that is debatable and has a logical counter-argument. An argumentative research essay formalizes the way you gather your supporting evidence. Purpose When you write an argumentative essay, you want to make your readers agree with your stance on an issue (i.e., to persuade them). You may also wish to make your readers act on the issue, in which case you will have to specify what they should do. Audience To reinforce for your readers your credibility (ethos), you will * employ a formal tone * include much evidence from outside sources to support your arguments * analyse these arguments in depth You should consider whether or not your audience is familiar with the issue. If not, you will have to provide more background information than you would for a knowing audience. You should gauge your readers’ stance on the issue. Are they * supportive? (i.e., do they agree with your stance?) * hostile? (i.e., do they disagree with your stance?) * wavering? (i.e., have they yet to take a stance on the issue?) Your readers’ stance will influence the amount and kinds of evidence you will need to support your arguments. Topic ...

Argumentative Essay

...Argumentative Essay The function of an argumentative essay is to show that your assertion (opinion, theory, and hypothesis) about some phenomenon or phenomena is correct or more truthful than others'. The art of argumentation is not an easy skill to acquire. Many people might think that if one simply has an opinion, one can argue it successfully, and these folks are always surprised when others don't agree with them because their logic seems so correct. Argumentative writing is the act of forming reasons, making inductions, drawing conclusions, and applying them to the case in discussion; the operation of inferring propositions, not known or admitted as true, from facts or principles known, admitted, or proved to be true. It clearly explains the process of your reasoning from the known or assumed to the unknown. Without doing this you does not have an argument, you have only an assertion, an essay that is just your unsubstantiated opinion. Argumentative essays are often organized in the following manner: 1. They begin with a statement of your assertion, its timeliness, significance, and relevance in relation to some phenomenon. 2. They review critically the literature about that phenomenon. 3. They illustrate how your assertion is "better" (simpler or more explanatory) than others, including improved (i.e., more reliable or valid) methods that you used to accumulate the data (case) to be explained. Finally revise and edit, and be sure to apply the critical process to your...

English 111 Reflection

...TRYING TO BECOME A BETTER WRITER At the beginning of my English 111 class, I was unsure of my writing skills for college, thus English 111, which is a writing class, was intimidating to me. I had been out of school for over thirty years, and my memory of my writing in high school is not so clear. So at the beginning of the year, Dr. Kennedy asked us what we wanted to get of our class this semester. It was not hard for me to say I wanted to improve my writing skills. The skills I learned in English helped me improve my writing in other classes as well. Learning how to take notes with the double entry journal and Kia styles were a big help in my psychology and art history classes. Accordingly, the MEAL plan was a big help with getting...

Qualities Of An Argumentative Writer

...Being more of an argumentative writer, I felt a lot more comfortable writing this essay than the first essay; although this was still an analytical paper, it definitely had some argumentative aspects in it. Writing in general is not my strong suit, but I feel that I really improved my sentence flow and my ability to incorporate quote in my essay. One of the parts of my essay that I am particularly happy with is my introductory paragraph. For me, the introductions and conclusions are the hardest parts of an essay; you have to introduce the topic and explain your stance, but you also don’t want to say too much so you won’t end up being repetitive throughout your essay. I feel like my introduction provides just enough information to interest the...

An Interpretation of the Pleas of Mary Fisher

...It is important to bear this definition in mind as we survey anything. It is, perhaps, a very cynical way to look at the world—but only in being a skeptic can one avoid misinformation. With that in mind, what are the rhetorical modes? Bill Stifler wrote the following on the subject, which sums them up very well: “Rhetorical modes are patterns of organization aimed at achieving a particular effect in the reader. Narration and Description are modes whose primary purpose is stirring the reader's emotions. Process, Cause/Effect, Comparison/Contrast, Illustration, Definition, and Classification/Division essays aim at helping readers understand a subject, exploring its functions, causes, consequences, relationships to other subjects, meaning, or nature. Argumentative and Persuasive essays seek to change readers' attitudes or actions with regard to specific subjects. Each kind of essay (or mode) has its own unique characteristics and qualities as well as characteristics...

Essay on English

...Argumentative Essay: Why is it so Important to Know More than One Language We live in a multilingual world that is becoming increasingly globalized and it is therefore very important to know more than one language. There are three main reasons for this: an additional language can help you progress in your career, you gain an awareness of other cultures, and it helps increase our understanding and knowledge of our own language. More and more job advertisements are now specifying that they want second, third, and even fourth languages in some cases, and knowing more than one language opens up your prospects in a highly important way. Furthermore, as more and more companies begin to trade internationally, people are frequently beginning jobs for which they need no language skills, but then being asked to relocate abroad, or offered a promotion that requires language skills. Therefore, it helps with career enhancement. Some people refute this claim by saying that there are plenty of other jobs available, but this is simply not the case anymore with the global recession and more countries being international. The second reason that it is important to know more than one language is that it increases cultural awareness and allows you to communicate with different people. All good methods of learning languages also entail learning about another culture, especially when your language skills get to a higher level. This awareness allows people from different nationalities and religions...

Personal Narrative: My English Classes Journey
