...CHAPTER I PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE Background of the Study Have you ever wondered how laundry detergents started? Where did one of our most used cleaning products come from? Initially, people would wash their clothing in a lake or river using a wash board and some soap. Throughout the time of the Egyptians and Babylonians, soaps came from rendered animal fat and ashes. It wasn't until World War II that laundry detergents came out. Laundry detergent is not a soap but actually a chemical compound which cleans clothing by keeping the dirt suspended in the water while breaking down barries between the water molecules so the water can be more efficient. Using laundry detergent was cheaper, more efficient method of washing clothing and it did not take long for people to start switching to this method. To add on, in the past, lye was a popular soap product. However, standard and lye based soaps were found to be too harsh on washing machines and thus ended the use of lye. Unfortunately, this does not mean that laundry detergents are no longer harmful. Laundry detergents impact the environment and clean water standards making them much worse for us than they were in the past. It is incredibly difficult to control the impact that laundry detergents have on the environment with all the chemicals that are in the bottle. Plus, most people have no way of knowing what is in their laundry detergent because it is not legally required that the ingredients be listed on the label. Thus,...

... So we could hear twice as much as we speak.' (Epictetus, Greek philosopher) Listening is the language modality that is used most frequently. It has been estimated that adults spend almost half their communication time listening, and students may receive as much as 90% of their in-school information through listening to instructors and to one another. Not all listening is the same; casual greetings, for example, require a different sort of listening capability than do academic lectures. Language learning requires intentional listening that employs strategies for identifying sounds and making meaning from them. Listening involves a sender (a person, radio and television), a message, and a receiver (the listener). In addition, listeners must deal with the sender's choice of vocabulary, structure, and speed of delivery. The complexity of the listening process is magnified in second language contexts, where the receiver also has incomplete control of the language. Teaching listening skills is one of the most difficult tasks for any ESL teacher. This is because successful listening skills are acquired over time and with lots of practice. It's frustrating for students because there are no rules as in grammar teaching. Speaking and writing also have very specific exercises that can lead to improved skills. This is not to say that there are not ways of improving listening skills; however they are difficult to quantify. One of the largest inhibitors for students...

...Aimée L. Arcoraci-Davies Professor Maria Evangelatou HAVC 155 Research Paper 4 June 2013 Cleopatra in Cosmetics: Iconography and the Journey to Attaining Flawless Beauty How has Cleopatra been used as an apparatus manipulated through capitalist- consumerism under the guise of attaining ultimate beauty? How has the exoticization and romanticism of beauty products, such as Palmolive soap, result in the products becoming more appealing to female consumers? This essay examines the problematic ideology of Cleopatra as the beautiful queen with the “flawless” complexion used in beauty advertisements of the 1920s addressed towards the post-World War I “modern woman” as a source of sociopolitical embodied power to entice men. This essay also explores concepts of femininity, modernity, and ideals of female beauty that have been constructed through a historically patriarchal framework which involves emphasizing the ‘seductive power’ of women, and revolves around the obsession for preserving a youthful girlish beauty and perpetuating women’s place in the home as the ‘pretty little wife’, in juxtaposition with George Bernard Shaw’s ‘pretty little queen’ caricature of Cleopatra. By invalidating or distorting her power, these expectations and gender based stereotypes impact society today in the same ways by advertising flawless skin with no visible pores or wrinkles as one of the many unrealistic sociocultural standards for females. For thousands of years, Cleopatra has been used as a...

...Evidence Based Practice. Research Methods. Evidence-Based Practice (EBP), the skill of using correct research methods, the importance of making informative decisions based on the best EBP within the health care industry as well as an example of EBP in regards to infection control and hand washing procedures will be key issues discussed throughout this essay. The health profession is continually developing and adapting in its implementation to health care techniques and skills due to changing world health conditions. It is therefore imperative that research be constantly conducted to analyse new research relating to health care to ensure health care practitioners are using techniques derived from the most current evidence (Aveyard & Sharpe, 2009). Evidence Based Practice can be defined as, “the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the health care of patients” (Sackett, Richardson, Rosenberg, & Haynes, as cited in Craig & Smyth 2007). The basis of EBP is that decisions are made by assessing not only the information at hand, but also integrating clinical experience, the most current evidence available, critical thinking and keeping in mind the patient’s best interest and preferences (Aveyard & Sharpe, 2009). Evidence based practice was developed because of the commitment of health care practitioners to social research and science (Mullen, as cited in Liamputtong...

A ritual view is directed not towards the addition of messages in space but the maintenance of society in time, not the act of imparting information or influence but the creation, representation, and celebration of shared even if illusory beliefs, James,(1988: 43). This essay will discuss how mass communications has transformed the temporal and spatial foundations of the social-sphere. ...English 102 10 June 2010 Contamination OCD and Our Health Contamination obsessive-compulsive disorder can be the most unnecessary and most annoying disorder out there. Consider the feeling of constantly tracing the history of germ contents for everything you touch. It’s nearly impossible, but enough to drive a person crazy. Dealing with contamination OCD myself, I am a self-proclaimed “germ-a-phobe” or “germ-freak,” but living in fear of germs is not what I always dreamed of. Anxiety is an understatement in regards to never touching the TV remote control just because I don’t know who touched it last and what they’ve touched last, or letting everyone believe I’m unfriendly just to avoid a high-five, even though I do carry hand sanitizer with me. These are unnecessary and irrelevant thoughts to anything worthwhile, but somehow they aren’t as easy to get rid of as you might think. Contamination OCD can cause so much fear and anxiety in a person’s life, but what is it that actually jump starts this seemingly endless annoyance? Should the rest of the world consider our thoughts on the fact that maybe germs are dangerous or is it the disinfectants that are really causing us harm? Even though disinfectants pose such a dangerous threat to our health due to toxins in them, those living with contamination OCD still can’t seem to accept that fact and put down the cleaners in fear of being contaminated by germs because of the habits and rituals that have taken over in our minds and...

...Annotated Bibliography: What the Literature Says About Juvenile Sex Offenders The following articles, factsheets, and studies have been compiled to assist attorneys and individuals working on behalf of youth charged with sexual offending. The information contained in these resources aim to help others realize the fundamental differences between adult sex offenders and juvenile sex offenders, which include positive responses of juveniles to treatment, low recidivism rates of juveniles and negative impact of registries on youth development. It is our hope that this information will be used to improve legal outcomes for juvenile sex offenders, and uphold the purpose of the juvenile justice system as a rehabilitative, not punitive, system. PUBLICATIONS BY TOPIC Recidivism Rates/Amenability to Treatment Judith V. Becker, What We Know About the Characteristics and Treatment of Adolescents Who have Committed Sexual Offenses, 3 CHILD MALTREATMENT 317, (1998). ...French Stereotypes Stereotyping is basically a part of human nature. When an individual interacts with other people he has the tendency to make generalizations out of their characteristics and to consider these characteristics as applicable to all people of the same class. Stereotyping is defined as the process where an individual create in his mind an image of another person (Macrae, Stangor & Hewstone 3). It is also defined as “a fixed, commonly held notion or image of a person or group, based on an oversimplification of some observed or imagined trait of behavior or appearance” (Media Awareness Network). Even though we are unique and distinct from each other, it is part of human nature to make generalizations of people belonging to a specific race and nationality. These generalizations are being reinforced in movies, televisions, novels and other forms of mass media. This essay seeks to highlight the different French stereotypes being portrayed in mass media and to establish that these stereotypes are not necessarily accurate representations of the French people. Stereotyping has a positive and negative effect not only to the person being referred to but also to the community in general. When an individual creates a mental image of somebody and put that in his mind, he also acts in accordance with this stereotype. The stereotyped images serve as a person’s paradigm through which he sees the world. As a result, he behaves and acts in accordance with this stereotype...
