...“Violence Vanquished” Response * Do you agree or disagree with Pinker's idea about violence? Why or why not? * Using the ideas from Gilbert (surrogates, super-replicators, predicting the future) how can we encourage society to further decrease violence in the future? Should we? * What connections do you see between Gilbert's argument, Pinker's argument, and our topic of future studies? I would say that I do agree that the rate of violence has substantially decreased, over the years since prehistoric history, but I ultimately would have to conclude that the rate of violence hasn’t been demarked to the status of miniscule, or, seemingly, vanquished. Violence is an act of aggression which demonstrates itself by stemming out of turbulent, hostile environments, and then spreads- quite like a pestilence growing from a natural and biological waste area. It can be used as an act to defy other individuals, or people, with intent to physically harm- and will generally incite more violence as a reaction. True, violence ran rampant in ancient times, in circumference to the authoritarian police ruling of our present-day court proceedings, but this doesn’t exclude the decisions of individuals or groups to continually act out their aggression and frustrations in domestic areas, during sporting events, as a means to accomplish a crime against fellow humanity, or even as a riot against civil demonstrations. Violence is still enacted on every nation-state, by one-another...

...Essay for OSEP Why would you like to participate in the OSEP? First of all, to be honest, the sound of studying in a foreign environment is extremely exciting. Why exciting? It is the idea of independence, exploring new things, different culture & environment, making new friends, stepping out of my comfort zone and so much more. Let's put them into details: 1. Independence - I think independence can be picked up even locally, but your parents will always be there to pick you up when you fall unlike when you are overseas by yourself. That to me, living by yourself, simple things like; settling your daily meals & needs, doing laundry and just everything by yourself is one of the best ways to me to up your independence. 2. Exploring new things / different culture - Like what Mary Anne Radmacher said, "I am not the same, having seen the moon on the other side of the world." Embracing a whole different culture will not only help better myself as an individual but also widen my horizons that can be useful whether it is in business settings or street knowledge in the near future. 3. Making new friends - There's nothing better than making more friends, especially around the world. Period. I like to see having friends in this manner "Friends teaches you life lessons like no others can." 4. Stepping out of my comfort zone - I think this is one of the greatest takeaways from the OSEP. Just basically, staying in a foreign country where English isn’t native language...

Criterion has two complementary applications: E-rater®, an automated essay scoring system and Critique Writing Analysis Tools, a suite of programs that detect errors in grammar, usage, and mechanics, that identify discourse elements in the essay, and that recognize elements of undesirable style. These evaluation capabilities provide students with feedback that is specific to their writing in order to help them improve their writing skills. Both applications employ natural language processing and machine learning techniques. All of these capabilities outperform baseline algorithms, and some of the tools agree with human judges as often as two judges agree with each other. 2. Application Description Criterion contains two complementary applications that are based on natural language processing (NLP) methods. The scoring application, e-rater®, extracts...

Art is an integral part of my life and I worked hard and dedicated all of my time to being accepted as a student at OCAD. In terms of my specific program, Illustration can be hard to define to people who are not very familiar with the field. ...Student-Caregiver Scholarship Hello, I’m La’Ronica Craven a sophomore at Wells College and I care for my great grandma, Zelda Klaczko, three times a week. She is a retired, very polite, strong-willed, independent woman that doesn’t like to ask for help or rely on anyone, that has volunteered at a local church in Camillus for several years. My great grandma had a stroke on April 26th, 2018 the day before my uncle Doug passed away on April 27th 2018 from cancer. With finals right around the corner, I had to learn how to grieve, cope, and adjust to caring for my great grandma three days out of the week, on-top of my part-time job and studying for finals that started on May 7th. I definitely overworked myself the last couple of weeks of school. Though it wasn’t easy, I was able to adjust to my new lifestyle without my uncle and with caring for great grandma. Due to stress, grieving, being a full-time student, being a caregiver for my great grandma, and working part-time at Wegmans, I had gotten very little sleep, but despite all of this I was able to ace all of my finals. I’ve been there to help her get better and feel some sort of normalcy after both of the devastating events in April from...

The article that I found to be really helpful was titled “Strategies to Prepared Middle School and High School Students for College and Career Readiness.” The authors of this article are Rich A. Radcliffe and Beth Bos. In the article it says “Each year approximately 1.2 million students fail to graduate from high school,”...
