...said. “But if I want to, I can ship you yhere, so you’d better do as I tell you.” I bent over and was passed on to the next room. There, a pretty young woman with cold eyes asked me if I knew how to read and write. “Of course,” I said. “What languages?” she asked. When I replied, “ Hebrew, Yiddish, Russian, German and French –and English, as you can seen,” she got very suspicious and asked me what I did for a living. “I write books,” I said. Little did I know that in America no one ever believes this. She looked at me the way one looks at a madman. “What kind of books?” she asked sharply, closing one eye and squinting with the other. “Stories,” I replied pompously, “essays, dissertations on Biblical poetry, political science, et cetera, et cetera”. “How can you make a living by doing this?” she inquired, with evident disgust. “That’s very perceptive of you, “I said with a broad smile. “I can’t.” “Turn around,” she commanded. She made a letter on my back with a piece of chalk and motioned for me to leave. “Next!” she shouted. “What’s that for?” I asked, trying to see what she had written. “Nothing,” she said, and...

...Title Boonville, Indiana is a quaint little town, nothing really happens, when there's a fender bender up on the Square, it makes front-page news in the Standard. If you can overlook the severe absence of teeth and the sheer over abundance of idiotic idiosyncrasy, Boonville is just the township for you. My mother and Joyce Mason have been friends ever since high school, and them being well into their fifties, have been together longer that she's been with my father. Joyce owns a small pawnshop up on the square and is up there 9-5, 4 days a week working like everyone else. Her having this shop has opened up many opportunities for me, on both the employee and customer side. I can almost credit her for getting me into music. When I was 14, she had this cheap old bass guitar up there, I wanted it so, so badly, but 90 dollars to a 14 year old is an unprecedented amount of money. Joyce, being the kind soul that she is, allowed me to come up and do various tasks for her, shelving DVD's, cleaning showcases, those types of things. Now as I'm older, I'm more aware of the quality of am instrument and I'll snag most of the good stuff that comes through at a discounted price. Just a perk of having a good friend. Now this one particular day, in 2009, I was up there putting a payment on a vintage Les Paul that came through, nothing out of the ordinary. I drove up after school and was hanging out behind the counter for a while just visiting, waiting for my Mom to come up and exercise...

Frankie Browne’s motivation to steal the Dublin papers was founded in his interest to ensure that his brother, Mark Brown, got his rightful share of the Wise inheritance. Manny believed that the Dublin Papers would ensure that he got was rightfully his. Though the book does directly narrate or offer insight on how the Dublin Papers were stolen, it indirectly links them to Frank Browne. He is established as the thief in the final epilogue. “A dirty crumpled envelope upon which was written Dublin Papers “was found in Frank’s pockets as he lay dead in Chelsea”(O'Carroll 190). The link is further drawn from the author’s assertion that Agnes Browne’s children stood for each other despite their differences. “If you take on one of the Agnes Browne’s children, you take on them all, wherever they are” ” (O’Carroll 190). This serves to show that the Browne family always stood by each...

...The Story of Baucis and Philemon Ovid is an extremely detailed writer, enabling the reader to envision what is written. Each story that Ovid writes seems to convey a deeper message, making Ovid’s writing even more appealing to the reader. Specifically, the myth that touched me the most was The Story of Baucis and Philemon. Its powerful content, coupled with its unique style, makes it a memorable poem in Ovid’s Metamorphoses. There is a specific writing style which keeps the reader interested in reading the poem itself. Ovid’s main message in the poem, which struck me most, was Ovid’s emphasis on the importance of hospitality to one’s neighbor. Despite their lack of money, Baucis and Philemon offered their guests only the very best they had. Baucis and Philemon undoubtedly made every effort to be hospitable to their guests, truly making them feel comfortable as though the guests were in their own home. To highlight the extent of their hospitality, Ovid goes into great detail about the set up of the dinner table and meal preparation. In doing so, the reader is able to experience for himself the time and effort that Baucis and Philemon put in to satisfy their guests. For example, Ovid informs the reader of such minute details such as the fact that Philemon pulled out a couch for the Gods to sit on while Baucis warmed up the fire to cook. Likewise, Ovid goes into great detail of the hard work Baucis put in for the meal preparation and the meal itself. “ One table-leg...

...Champagne and Parmesan Is a monopolized market ever the best structure for a society? The European Union is trying to do exactly that. They are trying to monopolize markets that they feel they can exclusively provide, allowing them to inflate prices to reap more profits. Champagne and parmesan cheese are both household items that are used every day throughout the world. They are not looked at as an inimitable provided product, rather one that is easily attainable and at a relatively inexpensive price. However, creating exclusivity gives the region more control on their product. They can better monitor the quality, the inputs in the production and in return, the outcome. These are all wonderful things for true authentic champagne, but should one region be allowed to control the global market on a particular product? There has already been a law passed in the late 19th century that prohibits any vineyard not in Champagne to make a drink called “champagne”. What we normally refer to as “champagne” is technically “sparkling wine”. This was noted in the Treaty of Versailles at the end of World War 1, making it a law in every country that signed the treaty. However, The United States never signed the Treaty, so American vineyards were never forced to follow this until the U.S restricted the use of the name “champagne” for all wines made after 2006. Being that there are already regulations in this country that protects the authenticity of true champagne from the Champagne...

...Explication of “Dulce et Decorum Est” By: Wilfred Owen Dulce et Decorum Est is a poem written by Wilfred Owen that uses powerful imagery to express an important message. A message that war is not glorious and noble and should not be portrayed this way. The speaker is a soldier in the army who describes the true horrors of the war and how young men believed it was an honor to die for your country. The poem is written in a simple regular rhyme scheme. Owen uses graphic imagery to show what the war was like. The similes and metaphors he uses give you a clear picture to describe the ugliness of the war. The tone is very harsh and he speaks very direct. He uses words that will shock you and leave you with a sick feeling. In the first stanza, the first two lines of the poem are, “Bent double, like old beggars under sacks/Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge”. This represents the men bent over carrying their belongings through the mud. They are being compared to as old beggars & hags, (miserable ugly old women). However, these men were young. In the third and forth lines, “Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs/And towards our distant rest began to trudge”, represents the tired soldiers heading back to camp. In the fifth and six lines, “Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots/But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;” this shows how tired the men were as if they were marching in their sleep. Many have lost their boots and...

Owen used lots of strong and ugly word like “yelling, stumbling, choking, drowning…etc.” to let the reader illustrate how vile and inhumane it actually is. Owen use “Dulce et Decorum Est” as a title, it is a Latin phrase which means “it is sweet and honorable to die for your country”. It give readers a false sense of the poem, it makes them think that this poem is definitely about a heroic guy did something great in the war, like sacrifice himself for the country. At the end, Owen continues his poem by ending that the title is a lie. In this poem, the speaker describe the scenes in the battlefield, he want the readers to image it. ...1. Bent double, like old beggars under sacks, Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge, The reader is introduced to the horror of war in the first lines of the poem as Owen depicts the poor physical condition of the men. They are facing huge challenges and that they were not the men that they were at first because they were young men who were highly motivated. We cursed through sludge suggests to us how the soldier are off to war this shows that they are cursed and the word sludge suggests to us that they are off to fight in horrendous conditions. Additionally, at the end it shows us that rather being glories young men they turn into this horrible creature because they are being described as old beggars and hags and it shows that they are old before their time and they have got no control over their lives. They can’t walk properly and this tells us that they are very weak because it clearly shows that they are not prepared for it and that they were just brainwashed to go to war to fight for their country which was sweet and glory. Moreover, the soldiers are coughing like an old sick ugly women and this clearly defines how they are feeling and are compared to weak and old. This simile demonstrates how dirty and unhealthy the soldiers appear. The comparison to ‘old beggars’ Coughing like hags is a simile and they are compared to these old ugly women...

During the progressive era of World War I the use of barbaric tools of destruction were used in the midst of the war. Chemical Warfare was introduced and new mechanical demands were developed to destroy men’s hopes of freedom. Men feared each other because of the deeds they would perform to survive.
