In our readings there was a quote from Starratt in the Shapiro and Stefkovich reading which states, we have come to believe that when working all together the ethics of justice, critique and care do not provide an adequate picture of the factors that must be taken into consideration to make ethical decisions. To fill that gap, the ethic of professionalism is added to the paradigm.
Professionalism is the competence or skill expected of an individuals in the workplace. Within the workforce today, there seems to be a very distinct attitude or feeling that ‘I deserve’ to be rewarded now; or I cannot tell my co-worker how I came to a conclusion, I was able to do this myself they need to figure it out for themselves also.
I realize this is the age of the Millennials, which I admit, I do need to step back and appreciate that this is a different cultural way of thinking. But it has also become part of my job to help these individuals realize some basic professionalism and curtesy to progress in their career.

You need to develop a sense of trust with the employees if you want them to trust you. This is accomplished more through actions and discussions. You need to have them understand what you expect of them as a professional and then you listen to their concerns regarding the expectations. In the end you have developed a verbal contract of what is perceived as right and wrong or good and bad behavior. That takes dedication and cooperation from both sides to make that happen. For most individuals this needs to be a learned concept, it is always easier to just tell someone what to do and not listen to their

...Values; Professionalism & Personal Ethics Professionalism: Exuding an image of professionalism is vital to survival in business, whether as a small business owner, a corporate manager or a frontline employee. There are a number of core criteria for anyone wishing to gain an image of professionalism in the workplace. “Professionalism is an abstract attribute possessed by a person if he/she has the combination of qualities like specialized knowledge, ethical behavior, competency, good communicative and productive skills, self regulation, sincerity, empathy, positive attitude towards work, accountability, responsibility, social awareness, timeliness and respectfulness towards seniors as well as sub –ordinates.” People of different profession may need to have some special qualities based on their jobs in order to be professional. But the above mentioned qualities, in general are indispensable for being professional. However, presenting a professional image doesn’t mean sacrificing one’s own personality. Rather, it simply means that he/she should try to be as self aware as possible and remain alert to, and respectful of how his/her words and actions will be interpreted by others. Nobody is a born professional. It is more of an art than a science, and anyone can master it by a keen attention to detail and a bit of practice. Professionalism

...Professionalism connotes different meaning to different people as it cuts across all walks of life. Professionalism as it relates to the medical profession embodies the relationship between medicine and society as it forms the basis of patient-physician trust. It makes salient factors like attitudes, behaviors, and characteristics which are desirable among the medical profession evident (Ross-Kerr & Wood, 2006). A high level of professionalism should be exhibited on the job looking at the example of surgeons performing a rectum operation on a patient and they busted into laughter in the process since the patient was on anesthesia. This was an unethical behavior they were shooting the video and making fun of the client lying in pain awaiting their help. “The intimacy and integrity of the nurse-client relationship demand that nurses protect the right of their clients. This achieved as nurses follow standards, policies, guidelines, and legislations regarding consent to treatment (Ross-Kerr & Wood, 2006, P 106).” In essence, the adherence to professionalism is of great significance when it comes to the medical profession. “In nursing, professionalism is described as the skills, attitude, values and behaviors common to those that undertake the practice of medicine. Discuss this in the light of professionalism in the public relations industry Professionalism in public relations is a multifaceted construct that discusses the ethical standards and skills required for PR practitioners and some of the criteria that are central to the profession are a body of knowledge, ethical practice, certification, importance to society and review by peers (Grunig & Hunt, 1984). The core professional value that serves as the ethos for the whole profession is the foremost among these criteria (Grunig, 2000), however, some practitioners discount it for its lack of pragmatics due to failing to master communication techniques that are known by the average citizen, people today who call themselves public relations practitioners still do not measure up to professional standards and lack of training (J. Grunig & L. Grunig, 1992; Grunig & Hunt, 1984; Dozier, Grunig, & Grunig, 1995). Professionalism in the Workplace

...Professionalism in the Workplace Professionalism in the Workplace In today’s competitive workforce, job applicants need more than a college degree to be successful in a professional setting. Aside from obtaining proper certification for professional career paths, it is currently much more important to exude professionalism in all work place situations. With so many people obtaining college degrees recently, the ability to emit several character traits is important to getting, and keeping, a job. Leondro Valente defines professionalism as, “the conduct, aims or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or professional person; it implies quality of workmanship or service” (Valente, 2014). To successfully obtain professionalism in the workforce, a person should be trustworthy, competent, and respectful. These characteristics lend themselves to the production of clear, coherent, and valuable work production, and positive work relationships with others. Exhibiting trustworthy behavior can be shown using professional references from past jobs, internships, and other professional opportunities. Trustworthiness is also earned while working on the job because, “you influence more by your actions than your words” (Russell, 2012). Key influences to demonstrating and achieving trustworthiness are being self-aware, being the first to give trust, and being the best version of yourself at work and for the benefit of others. It takes dedication integrity and professionalism to become a successful police officer and to become a successful leader, which I find go hand in hand when talking leadership. I believe the best model designed for law enforcement is the five I’s of professionalism, these steps are perfect for front-line leaders who are constantly working to improve others but also improve themselves day by day. Leaders come in different ranks in the police force and each rank has a different role in leadership. Police Chiefs are generally a walking example of the police force who need to be able to speak with integrity and lead an entire city to believe in the men and women who serve in the city. Sergeants are the biggest leaders internally, sergeants have to hold their officers to a certain standard of professionalism and make sure each officer is aware of the code of ethics within the police force. A model that every officer should adapt to whether leading a team or just being a community leader should be the five I’s of police professionalism. This should be an important role for any leader to preach these fives steps to his/her fellow officers, and that would be the first step of making sure every officer presents their self with integrity, professionalism and follows the code of ethics on and off the job. Ethics in the Marketing of Medical Services

...Ethics in the Marketing of Medical Services STEPHEN R . LATHAM, J.D., PH.D. Abstract This paper deals with the ethics of marketing medical services by physicians, medical groups, hospitals and other mainstream medical caregivers in the United States. It does not deal with pharmaceutical marketing, since that raises a number of special issues, some of them legal and some having to do with the unique culture of pharmaceutical marketing, which really ought to be dealt with separately. Nor does it touch on the little-explored field of marketing alternative and complementary medicine. It begins with a general description of what is included in "the marketing process." It then briefly tours some of the difficulties faced by those who would market medical services ethically, and ends with some conunents on the relevance of professionalism to ethical marketing. Key Words: Professionalism, medical marketing, market competition, health care, product, placement, price, promotion, ethics.
