...Should All People Be Treated Equally in a Society? Egalitarianism (from French égal, meaning "equal") - or, rarely, equalitarianism - is a trend of thought that favors equality for particular categories of, or for all, living entities ("Egalitarianism"). Egalitarian doctrines maintain that all humans are equal in fundamental worth or social status. Equity is probably one of the most fundamental values common to all people in a society. Equity can be elusive; however, it is usually defined in terms of how equals are treated by government policies and the legal system, and how we decide who these equals are. The concept of equality is multifaceted; the literature on theories of equality is immense and the application of these theories is complex. My definition of equality is the state or quality of being equal. Should people be truly treated equally? Can it ever be possible to achieve true equality even if we wanted to? No. It’s just not in our nature nor is it fair to the citizens around us. It hides people’s true talents, will cause chaos without the government, and it isn’t fair financially. Besides, no one, no country, or nothing’s perfect. We shouldn’t or can’t force everyone into thinking they’re equal and should be treated the same, it’s just never going to happen. In the novel Animal Farm (Orwell), Orwell writes about a world where animals overthrow the oppressive farmer Mr. Jones and try to construct a society based on the founding principal that all animals are equal...

...The ideals that should be honored in my utopian society are freedom, equality, and justice. In a perfect world, freedom is a must-have. It allows people to express themselves and choose their own paths in life—like what job they want, how many children they want, who their spouse is, etc. For example, in The Giver, choices aren’t a part of their community. All of the important life events are chosen for you, like your occupation and your family—you don’t get a say in your own life. This is one of the reasons why I would value freedom in my utopian society. If people got a say in what their life was like, happiness and individuality would be promoted because each person will go down a different path and experience different things. Although there is a possibility of making a wrong decision, that is part of life and makes people...

...Marissa Smith EngC. 0900- 10 Betsy Brown September 16, 2012 U.S. Should Accept Gay Marriage As Americans, homosexual couples deserve the same rights as heterosexual couples. We should legalize gay marriage because everyone deserves the basic constitutional rights. The first thing that should come to mind when you think of America, is a nation of peace and equality, not hate and disgust. We live in a nation of racism, sexism, and homophobia. Homosexuals have been fighting for rights since the 1960s, and yet here in 2012, their pleas and voices still go unheard. I believe we should allow same-sex marriage, because banning it is unfair and unconstitutional; love is all that matters in relationships, and by banning it, we aren’t solving anything, we are just making it worse. First, the Constitution does not state that gay marriage should not be allowed- however it does state that everyone has equal rights and opportunities- that includes homosexual relationships. Banning same-sex marriage is unconstitutional; making this issue illegal is a form of discrimination. A person should not be prevented from getting married due to personal preference. Those who do not understand - ridicule, harass and terrorize. This causes the afflicted to take horrible and drastic measures. Homosexual teenagers are even too scared to go to school because they are afraid to be themselves, and because who they are, they have to go through excessive bullying, teasing, and tormenting every day. We...

...Holocaust was a tragic event that struck the lives of many people personally. No one deserves being hated, even if you disagree with their beliefs, we are all still people. Hate is a very widespread and horrible thing. It was much more noticeable during the Holocaust and civil rights movement, but it can still happen now. We need to stand up and fight for what we believe in and help the ones being hurt. Kristallnacht was a horrible event that should have never occurred. Many Jewish people were affected by it. During this night, Nazis destroyed Jewish businesses, synagogues, and homes. Sick children were taken out of hospitals and dragged over broken glass. Everyone was devastated, many people were left in broken homes. ”Thou shalt not be a victim, thou shalt not be a perpetrator, above all, thou shalt not be a bystander” this was a quote by Yehuda Bauer. This means that you should stand up for what’s right and not just watch the bad things happen. If we just wait around and watch, history could repeat itself....

...Francis Fukuyama discussed in his essay, seem to believe that animals should be held to a higher power and be considered more valuable than that of humans. Fukuyama quotes from Peter Singer in his article “Human Dignity”, “the need for animal rights, since animals can experience pain and suffering as well as humans, and the downgrading of the rights of infants and elderly people who lack certain key traits, like self-awareness, that would allow them to anticipate pain. The rights of certain animals in his view, deserve greater respect than those of certain human beings” (Fukuyama 190). Overall, Singer is saying that depending upon the mental ability of the human and depending upon the animal it may be in demand of much more reverence than the human. Of course, there are several opinions in which other would throw this out just as Fukuyama would. He believes in the exact opposite and focuses on the importance of “human dignity.” Fukuyama is a strong believer in everyone being held equal no matter “race, gender, disability, or virtually any...

...equity, equality, and need are most relevant in the context of distributive justice, but might play a role in a variety of social justice issues.[4] These principles all appeal to the notion of desert, the idea that fair treatment is a matter of giving people what they deserve. In general, people deserve to be rewarded for their effort and productivity, punished for their transgressions, treated as equal persons, and have their basic needs met. However, because these principles may come into conflict, it is often difficult to achieve all of these goals simultaneously. According to the principle of equity, a fair economic system is one that distributes goods to individuals in proportion to their input. While input typically comes in the form of productivity, ability or talent might also play a role. People who produce more or better products...either by working harder, or by being more talented, this argument goes, should be paid more for their efforts than should people who produce less. Note that this sort of distribution may not succeed in meeting the needs of all members of society. In addition, the idea that justice requires the unequal treatment of unequals is in tension with the principle of equality. This principle of egalitarianism suggests that the fairest allocation is one that distributes benefits and burdens equally among all parties. If there are profits of $100,000, and 10 people in the company, the principle of equality would suggest that everyone would get...

...discrimination toward certain bodies. Moreover, the concerns of LGBTQ people of color are not incorporated in agendas of legal protection. Thus, further implying that it is acceptable to make agency for this groups a privilege. Although, it has been argued in legal discourse that gay marriage is a huge step into decreasing the dislike toward LGBTQ communities, the reality is, gay marriage has only enforces more normalization and “creat[ed] a double standard of for lesbian and gay sex [in whish one is] accepted if one is married [and] outlawed if one is not (Polikoff 233).” Therefore, even by arguing that gay marriage signifies the acceptance of diversity, it still promotes normative groups association. Under which, only those who can marry deserve of some more rights and health insurance through family. As a result, legal discourse enforces institutional systematic acceptance. The acceptance of gay marriage only serves to conform to what is closely related to living as heterosexual individuals. The current discourse of the law keeps putting band-aid solutions to larger issues and keeping reproductive cycles of subordination onto already marginalized groups. Moreover, the law creates an “us” and “them” division. The current legal discourse still fails to make connections between intersections and legal strategies to better serve states. As mentioned on the Incite Critical Resistance Statement, “LGBTI prisoners are denied basic human rights such as family visits from same sex partners...

...Give yourself peace of mind. You deserve to be happy. You deserve delight.” In this quotation Arendt links the issue of violence back to “the individual”. This means that she is exposing the personal “benefits” that dedicating yourself to the good would have. She suggests that if a person dedicates himself to the good, we will be happier as an individual. Additionally by being a kind person, you will receive the kindness that you deserve from the other good people around you. So in some way it suggests that some equality in the sense that if you do not commit any violent acts, other people will not be violent towards you. However this can be said not to be true as so many innocent civilian become victims of violent assault, such as in our real life situation of the attacks at the Ariana Grand concert where over many innocent children, teenagersand adults were injured and killed. This leads us to the next topic of equality. Hannah Arendt engaged in forming an equal society. In fact she was so determined, she even considered the right to vote “secondary” and the “right to home and marriage” more important. This can be also be seen through some of her statements such as “"right to marry whoever one wishes" or "inalienable human rights to 'life, liberty and pursuit of happiness proclaimed in the Declaration of Independence.'”, which both suggest that she was for a free society where everyone...

...All liberals endorse foundational equality, the belief that all humans are 'born' equal in the sense that their lives are of equal moral worth. This can be seen in the doctrine of natural rights. Tom Paine believed that all men are born equal and are of moral equal value; He wrote a book called the Rights of Man which talked about it. However, this did not state that ‘everyone, including women were equal, since it just referred to men. Consequently, Mary Wollstonecraft who was a British Feminist wrote a book in reply, called ‘A Vindication of The Rights of Women’ which led women to stand up for themselves too. In the end the US constitution stated that all humans are born equal. For example, A woman and a man both have equal rights in things such as the right to live, to get married and to make their own choices. There are some ideologies which do not believe in foundational equality, such as Fascism and Authoritarian Conservatism. Foundational equality implies Formal equality, the belief that citizens should enjoy the same formal status in society. The most important expressions of formal equality are legal equality (equality before the law) and political equality (universal suffrage and one person, one vote). This is also linked to negative freedom, which means people are allowed to do things, this means allowed by the law and rights to be able to do as they like, as long as they don’t break the law. All liberals believe in formal equality, as people should be constrained by...

...from who they are. K. Anthony Appiah’s “Race, Culture, Identity: Misunderstood Connections” is a perfect example as to why race should not define people as a whole. Appiah believes that we should not be catergozired in these racial groups because it takes away from our nation sticking together as a one. Both authors make it clear that race should not deprive anyone of human rights because every human deserves to have equal rights. Shelby discusses that in order to eliminate the black stereotypical image; African Americans must unite and call upon each other to fight towards racial injustice. Shelby states “Blacks are a people whose members need to work together to bring about their collective self- realization as a people” (585). This statement shows that Shelby strongly believes that African Americans should utilize black solidarity to the best of their capability to end racial injustice and to be treated equally with full freedom. Shelby does not want the reason for blacks to come together to fight for rights to be the identification of race, but to be because everyone deserve equal human rights. Most pragmatic nationalists believe that collective identity would make African Americans come together more than anything to...

...Equality Essay Prof. Greg J. Jungman POLS 1113--American Government Equality Equality is defined as” the state or quality of being equal; correspondence in quantity, degree, value, rank, or ability”. (www.dictionary.com[->0]) The fight for equality in our nation as been a long battle that is still going on. We all have civil rights now, which means that in the 5th and 14th amendment everyone is protected and guarantee rights and privileges and protected from discrimination that could be passed to them due to their race, ethnicity, sex or religion. Equality of opportunity, this subject can be sticky because a lot of people will somehow find a way to say that they are not being treated equal in certain situations such as jobs. The subject of equality of opportunity has been brought out to give fairness in certain situations such as jobs, and school. Those with different political views also look at this differently, liberals disagree on what needs to happen to maintain and ensure equal opportunity. Whereas the conservatives feel that inequality and hierarchy that goes with it should remain the same due to respect for the tradition of the Constitution. For the most part when I look around I feel I see an abundance of equal opportunity in our nation. Considering we are a very diverse country with many different ethnic backgrounds. I honestly believe that where we are at as a nation it would be difficult to not be an equal opportunity country. If that were the case there...

...for their families, because what they need for survival and homelife is overlooked by men in power. Resulting in clear evidence as one of the reasons behind why women needed the right to vote. These women simply wanted equality and adequate care for themselves and their children. Another supporting example is this quote from an anti-suffrage newspaper article: "The Suffragists teach women to revolt against the daily task of tending to child and house, and we sadly see the results in the nation's poor heath and lowered physique." (Cited from The Woman's Protest Against Woman's Suffrage, published by the National Association Opposed to Woman Suffrage, in October 1912.) The blatant disregard for women's right to equality in the previous text is exactly the reason why the suffragist movement took place. Notice how women are shamed for caring about their needs and not being only concerned for everyone else. Women are not mindless caretakers or sacrifical pawns to be controlled. Women deserve to have just as much say-so over their themselves and their communities as men, even through practicing such things as voting. Women are humans and deserve to be treated as such. This is why the suffrage movement is one of the historical movements that mattered; because equality is always...
