HOW SWAT OFFICERS AND FILM CREWS HANDLE SURPRISES. 1) How individuals respond to unexpected events that allow work to continue. 2) How are problems solved by using available resources? Outline the theoretical framework underpinning the study. It is impossible to predict everything that can go wrong in our daily lives and there is no question that all organizations, not just business, need to adapt in order to survive (Herold David M, Fedor Donald B 2009). Fortunately, in the academy of management journal article of expecting unexpected new research organizational behavior in fast -paced work environments has revealed a set of strategies that can improve individual reactions and overall group performance. The two author(s)’ Bechky and Okhuysen, in their study published in 2011 used strategic interviews and direct observation to find similarities between the ways Police SWAT team and film production crews cope with surprises breaking into a location, the SWAT team found more suspects than expected. In response, the lead officers changed their primary role from trying to reach the further corner of the location to covering areas and suspects as they advance. During a scene in which an actor was "slaughtered" and fell into a hot tub on the top floor of a mansion, the crew forgot to account for displacement...

...With all this change surrounding me and never actually having time to sit and think about the future. I was making decisions that didn't matter to me due to the fact that at any moment in time I could move or something could happen so no matter what decision I made it wouldn't make a difference. But it did. As time goes on you learn to go with the flow in a way that you don't become attached too much because you're expecting the unexpected, and I was expecting the worst. Now looking back, I realize that moving so much wasn't necessarily a negative, but a positive. It has set me up for the future. The idea of moving and changing things about my environment or myself is great. It shapes you into a person that many people aspire to be. An outgoing person. As you get older you tend to view things differently and this is something I see differently now. Many people have their own definition of the word change something that shaped us to become better or worse. My definition may be different than my peers, but that's what makes it so amazing. We all perceive things...

When the client changes its port number for subsequent connections, the server still identifies the client using its IP address and the new port number. To conclude, even if the server sends an old duplicate data packet, it will be rejected by the client because the client’s port number has changed, and the server is expecting communication on the new port associated with the current connection....

...The future is unpredictable and we never know when is the last chance to laugh, hug someone we love, or feel the moment. These thoughts were storming my mind one afternoon this summer when walking down one of the Moscow streets. Earlier that morning, I was expecting to have one more ordinary day spending time in Moscow with my mother, as everything was as usual: the sun was shining; the noisy constructions were going on all around, people were hurrying, and we were having our sweet and sometimes not so sweet conversations. That’s to say, with no special circumstances we were planning to visit a museum-gallery, have a dinner and spend the evening with friends. Nonetheless, in the evening I understood: this day was not usual but a special turning point in my life interpretation and understanding....

...thrifty success. Due to the economy, I have been trying to find ways of keeping more money in my pocket; at the same time, financially being able to keep my living expenses to a minimum. I have analyzed each individual living expense. In each category, I have found avenues of getting the best out of every buck we spend on living expenses. Most of the time household financial management is a sink or swim. Fortunately, budgeting does not require a fancy college degree. Basic arithmetic is the basic requirement of successful money management and living frugal. As we all know, the working class literally works paycheck to paycheck. It is good to have a emergency cushion if an unexpected major expense happens. I know everyone does not have $100,000 just sitting around to be waited on for an unexpected expense. I learned a long time ago for my grandmother that it is always good to save something even if it is just five dollars. That five dollars that you save every week by week or every time you get paid, adds up if you look at the sum annually. I am not a materialistic person. When it comes to spending, I get the things that I need and rarely get the things that I want. Just because I was not born with a silver spoon in my mouth, does not mean that I have to buy a silver spoon. You know things depreciate. I am happy with my life without lavish things. I will like to give many people the opportunity to know how to manage...

...the paper is weather stock prices reflect implications of current earnings for future earnings. This means that information weather positive or negative is not immediately absorbed and shown by the market. This is a very important question because we are expecting the market to fluctuate and absorb new information or announcements immediately. This actually shows that there isn’t much activity on the day of the announcement rather in a later quarter. In finance, the efficient-market hypothesis (EMH) asserts that financial markets are "information efficient". In consequence of this, one cannot consistently achieve returns in excess of average market returns on a risk-adjusted basis, given the information available at the time the investment is made. (Wikipedia 2012) The findings in the paper are inconsistent with the definition because what the authors are trying to shows us is that the market doesn’t reflect this information right away but it does allow us to predict the next four quarters. We see there are two main finding throughout the article and that is there is a “positive relation between unexpected earnings for quarter t and post announcement drift for quarter t +1, we find s negative relation between unexpected earnings for quarter t and the abnormal returns around the announcement of earnings for quarter t +4” and “signs and magnitudes of the three-day reactions are...

...actions completely transform their lives? In the beginning of the short story ,and Boyle paints a pretty picture of a couple obsessively in love with one another. The two have just graduated from high school with a world full of promise ahead. They are both children loved by their parents. Everything in their lives seems in place for them to have happy and successful futures. Their carelessness in conceiving a baby and their subsequent choice to discard of it in a dumpster sets the stage for a future full of misery. "There was no feeling like this, no triumph, no high - it was like being unconquerable, like floating. They kissed every time they met. They said I love you "a hundred times a day". After they discover they are expecting a baby they are in constant battle with each other, "Because they argued now, they wrangled and fought and debated . Jeremy reluctantly answers yes when China asks him if he still loves her. He has "no smile on his face. No human expression at all. They didn't kiss - they didn't even touch. Jeremy cannot even conjure an image of China in his mind while he is away from her Jeremy similarly tries to picture his mother but he cannot. He probably feels the same dis attachement from China as he did from his mother, who is shacked up for the weekend with a man that she has been dating. China is even prepared to testify against Jeremy in his trial saying that he acted alone because she never saw the baby. China...

...could have been so focused on something else that they failed to notice other salient objects in their visual field. This is called inattentional blindness. This takes a significant amount of cognitive ability, and there are things that can make it even harder. Alcohol can impair cognitive functioning immensely, so when alcohol and driving are combined, it can be quite dangerous. Clifasefi, Takarangi and Bergman (2006) wanted to know if people under the influence of alcohol, or people who believe they are under the influence of alcohol, are more or less likely to notice these unexpected objects. The researchers expected that they would find that participants that actually received alcohol, not considering if they were told they had alcohol or a placebo, would find it hard to focus their attention outside of the requested task. They also expected the participants that received the placebo to notice the unexpected object an equal number of times, regardless of if they were told they had alcohol or the placebo. To test their hypotheses the researchers used a 2x2 balanced placebo design. They randomly assigned 47 adult participants, aged 21 to 35, to one of four conditions: told alcohol/ got alcohol, told alcohol/ got placebo, told placebo/ got alcohol, or told placebo/ got placebo. All of the participants were screened and then placed into groups of four or less by gender and taken to the Behavioral Alcohol Research Lab, which is made to look like a cocktail lounge. One participant...

...Personally, I experience the prejudices of others, at times, due to my sexual orientation and perception of self. Criticisms typically are presented through the occasional name-calling and obscene comments from strangers or people I hardly know. However, my appearance does not reflect stereotypical assumptions about LGBTQ members of society. Many others tend to receive more measurable, concrete discrimination, such as, wages. In a 1995 study by M. V. Lee Badgett, it was proven that gay and bisexual men received eleven to twenty-seven percent less in wages than the average heterosexual man in the same region, with the same job, and having the same amount of education and experience. Unexpected, however, homosexual women reportedly make more...

...The Rape of Nanking” helped me to see a total different perspective about the participation of Japan during the World War ll. As you probably know I took some history courses that taught me the basic history about World War II, which resumed the participation of Japan with the detonation of the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. However, your book showed me that there was more information missing. First of all, the invasion that Japan started to plan to invade China. The maps gave me an specific idea of the invasion, they divided on three groups around Nanking. One was in Tai Hu a Lake between Nanking and Shanghai, while the other one traveled southern toward Nanking. The troops were commanded by Matsui Iwane (p. 37). Another important...

...December 27th, 2012; today I went to go see the production of Jekyll and Hyde in Philadelphia. Prior to entering the theater, I’ve been extensively studying the music for about a month, so I set myself up for very high expectations. Some key things that I was looking for was a full-sounding company/chorus and a wide-ranged Jekyll/Hyde. Before I continue this review, this was a very good show, but I would recommend it for the open-minded. Act I; as I was sitting at my seat (eagerly) waiting for the show to start, I had no idea what I was in for this evening. I was expecting the show to be very Broadway-esque, but it had some very unique and unexpected twists. At the start of Act I, I was immediately impressed with the staging. The management was very effective in their use of technology and lighting. During the scene when Jekyll sees his father in the asylum, I was very disturbed but in a good way. I was expecting the cast to wheel Dr. Jekyll’s father on some sort of gurney, and Jekyll would proceed to sing his opening number, but the scene was completely transformed. Jekyll’s father was strapped vertically on a bed, struggling to break free while Jekyll and the Board of Governors were discussing his condition. Instantly you get this feeling of mental frustration/anxiety from the character which was great because that’s what the whole musical revolves around. As Jekyll began singing “Lost in the Darkness”, I wasn’t immediately impressed by him. His diction was very strange and...

...Cinder Going into this book I had a pretty good idea what I was going to get: a sci-fi love story based strongly off of the fairytale Cinderella. Did I get what I was expecting? Technically yes but not in the way I was expecting. This is a Cinderella retelling. Anyone who has heard the original fairytale would be able to tell that. The way it’s retold though is what makes it interesting. All of the Cinderella elements are there: the evil stepmother, the dress, the ball, the prince, and the main character becoming royalty at the end. None of these things are the focus of the story, though. The main focus is the main character, Linh Cinder, trying to find a cure for the disease that is killing her sister, while also avoiding an evil moon queen...

...non-verbal communications were not used to the scripts best advantage. The ability to listen, along with the use of problem solving skills, were not used effectively. We must remember this is a comedy series, involving several characters with different perceptions of what reality is. The conflicts in this particular episode revolves around empathy, and the actions and reactions, involving one of the characters temporary sickness. The sick persons’ empathic friends took into consideration their sick friends perspective, as well as his thoughts and feelings. His friends recalled similar experiences in their own lives that had generated needy feelings of their own. Their sick friend complained about being sick, expecting to be responded to in a substantial way. His friends did not devalue or judge him, they understood the trauma he was feeling because of his sickness. The sick friend became very demanding of his friends, asking many special favors. The friends catered to his wishes, due to the empathy they had. When the sickness was over and the person felt better, his friends were...
