...Introduction At the time of Olaf Leu’s writing, the traditionalist geometry of the international typographic style and unrestrained freedom of American design was just as important as the influences on both German design and design around the globe. The American and japan conceptual innovation and visual invention was spread throughout the globe. During the 1980s and 90s the rapid development of electronic and computer technology began to change the process and appearance of design. Overnight these big changes recurred within mail, fax machines and the internet, this all served to further shrink the human community into Marshall Mcluhans global village. Influential People Alan Fletcher is one of the most influential figures in post-war British graphic design. The fusion of the cerebral European tradition with North America’s emerging pop culture in the formulation of his distinct approach made him a pioneer of independent graphic design in Britain during the late 1950s and 1960s. As a founding partner of Pentagram in the 1970s, Fletcher helped to establish a model of combining commercial partnership with creative independence. He also developed some of the most memorable graphic schemes of the era, notably the identities of Reuters and the Victoria & Albert Museum, and made his mark on book design as creative director of Phaidon. Siobhan Keaney After graduating from the LCP, Siobhan Keaney worked briefly for three of London’s most prestigious design companies. She...

...Otl Aicher and Erik Spiekermann: both German designers with differing philosophies and approaches to making work, have come to leave a lasting mark in the history of graphic design. Although both work through the well-known international design principle of many European graphic designers, the two use the grid systems differently to take on designs. Through the comparison of their works, philosophy, and their lasting legacies that they’ve left for the future, a better understanding of Spiekermann’s being the more accomplished designer will be achieved. First and foremost, Erik Spiekermann is known in the design world as an extremely accomplished typographer who pioneered through the 90s into the new age of type designed for the mobile screen. His most notable typefaces out of the 471 he designed are Nokia sans, Berliner Grotesk, Officina, and most importantly Meta. Coined as the “Helvetica of the 90’s” the nickname in itself speaks as a backhanded compliment of being the glass goblet typeface that spoke levels of versatility and sophistication. Although a ¬designer of the time can really only understand the tag of it being a 90’s typeface, it’s a different case in Europe. In fact, like Helvetica is used repeatedly in the United States, FF Meta is used throughout Germany in the same fashion. Originally designed for the German post office with 28 different weights (FF Meta – Desktop Font), Spiekermann designed this typeface with Helvetica being the complete antithesis in mind...

What makes a good proposal? One attribute is appearance. A strong proposal has an attractive, professional, inviting appearance. In addition, the information should easy to access. A second attribute is substance. A strong proposal has a well-organized plan of attack. A strong proposal also has technical details because technical depth is needed to sell your project. Remember: A proposal is a persuasive document. Required Format Format consists of the layout and typography of a document. In formatting your proposal, use the guidelines in Table 1. A template to produce your proposal exists at the following web page: http://www.writing.eng.vt.edu/design/proposal_template.doc One aspect of layout is the incorporation of illustrations. In your proposal, each illustration should have a name and be formally introduced in the text. Illustrations consist of figures and tables. Figures include photographs, drawings, diagrams, and graphs. Each figure should have a stand-alone caption, and the key points and features should be labeled. Tables are arrangement of words and numbers into rows and columns. Use tables to summarize lists that the audience will try to find later (the budget, for instance). Table 1. Format...

...Final Assignment June 13, 2011 Part I: 1. Wills are important because. 4. Many people may not understand how a credit score is calculated Part II Analyzing effective writing elements After reading paragraphs one and four there is little difficulty to identify that paragraph number four was more effective than paragraph number one. Of the two Paragraphs four presented facts and percentages in his paper such as. “Payment history accounts for roughly 35% of one’s overall score. This means that on-time payments are absolutely essential. Debt level is not far behind at 30%. This accounts for near-limits and the total amount of money owed. Length of credit history is next at 15%, followed by inquiries at 10% and mix of credit at 10%.” Paragraph four’s sentence structure and word choice were in line with the text and punctuation was good. Paragraph one had only the writer’s personal view on why Wills are important. More facts and general example would have kept me more engaged in what I was reading in paragraph one. The sentences used by the write could also have given a better description of what the “things going to someone you don’t want them to go to” are? Part III How the Center for Writing Excellence and WritePoint has helped me Before I started college my biggest fear was writing, to write and have people understand what I was trying to convey. The Center for Writing Excellence and WritePoint eliminate my fear of experiencing the feeling of judgment...

...Regardless of your occupation, work history, or objective, you need a résumé in order to get a job. The handwritten application, in which you had to squeeze the required information into very small boxes, is largely out of use. Applying for a job today means submitting an electronic résumé via the Internet or completing an application form via a company’s Web site or at a kiosk in the employer’s offices. A résumé is mandatory if part of your job-search plan is to place your application on file at an employer’s career site or a job-posting board. Think of your résumé as a personal advertisement and request for an interview. General Portrayal of Age Write your résumé to reflect a strongly positive and proud portrayal of your depth of capabilities and talents. Make no attempt to mislead or misinform the reader about your age. Most résumés require no more than 10 to 20 years of recent and relevant work history. Include earlier positions if they show qualifications for the position of interest. Generally avoid or minimize use of the word, "experience." Instead, emphasize capabilities, qualifications, and achievements—not previous titles, duties, and length of service. General Format and Appearance Résumés should not exceed two pages for most occupations, though educators and some professionals may require longer curricula vitae. Prepare your résumé in a standard word-processing application, such as Microsoft Word, using a traditional, easily read font, such as...
