...Dora the Explorer is basically a fun TV show for kids ages 6 and under but recently I just found out that many HHS students watch this show occasionally. This is not shocking to me, because after all it’s the second favorite show I like to watch on Nickelodeon (SpongeBob being the first). To anybody who is not familiar with the show (which is a shame if you don’t), Dora the Explorer is an adventure based story for kids. The main character, Dora with her friend Boots, goes on a mission in every episode to help someone or find something. She asks viewers (usually little kids) at home for help and clues to get to her destination and also gets help from her friends, the Map and Backpack. On her mission, she teaches viewers everyday Spanish words and some short phrases. Dora is seen as a hero in the eyes of her viewers as she walk through dangerous woods with her best friend Boots. But as we all know, every hero as a villain. Well this nice 8 year old girl has one and that will be Swiper. Swiper is a sneaky and mischievous fox that attempts to steal Dora’s items every episode. He sometimes succeed but most of the time he doesn’t (poor Swiper). What makes this show appealing to most HHS students is the storyline of the show. Even when we know the outcome of the story (Dora will always get to where she has to go), we still stay in front of the television till the show concludes. This is because; there is something about Dora that gets people’s attention. Sometime is the song that...

...Explorers Men and women have explored all ends of the earth and made profound discoveries. Without these discoveries the way we view our world might be different. Ponce De Leon was one of these explorers that help change the way we view earth. Who exactly was Ponce de Leon? What did he do in his life, and what was his discovery that deemed him one of history’s notable explorers? I will discuss Ponce de Leon’s background, his journeys and his discoveries. Juan Ponce de Leon was born during the Age of Exploration. Documentation places his birth around 1460 in Santervas De Campos, Spain, but later documentation places it more at 1474. No one is absolutely sure of the exact date of his birth. Ponce de Leon was born of noble parents who taught Ponce how to read and write. As a child he served as a page to Pedro Nunuz de Guzman and delivered messages for the royal court. Once a teenager, he joined the Spanish army and served in military until 1492. In September 1493 Ponce de Leon was one of 112 men that traveled with Christopher Columbus on Christopher’s second trip to the ‘New World’ but he did not return with Christopher Columbus. While on exploration of the island of Hispaniola, now known as Dominican Republic and Haiti, Ponce de Leon survived disease and bad weather. He also endured shortage of food and water to help colonize the new lands. Forcing Indians into slavery. Ponce De Leon spent the early part of the 1500s in Hispaniola. He established farms, distributed land...

...Natives and Explorers In this day, we often wonder why study Native American literature? Could it be because we instinctively feel it is because they were the first settlers of America? I will be explaining why Native American literature is America through history of the Native Americans and through literature written by the Native Americans. It is to be believed that the history of North America initiated when the ancestors of Native Americans made their way across a bridge that was once from the Bering Sea and connected Asia to North America. Native Americans believe that their ancestors originated in America and oral accounts of their foundation have been passed down from generation to generation. The Native Americans were very useful with using natural resources and adjusted well to the climate changes of where they lived. They for example, used wood that was collecting in the forest to build houses, boats, and tools. They utilized all of their natural resources including animal hide, bone as well as many other resources to sustain their way of life. Their diet depended on primarily on hunting and was supplemented with farming. When the European explorers began to reach their destination of the land the Native Americans have settled on, they were faced with new challenges. These challenges had some Native Americans coexisting with Europeans and trading and adapting to the new technologies the Europeans had to offer. This was a difficult concept...

...DISC 1312 11/09/2012 Logic and Consistency I would like to begin with a reminder of the purpose and importance of the job with which the people of this land have entrusted us. As justices of the Commonwealth, we are responsible for interpreting and applying the written law as accurately and fairly as possible. The citizens that have entrusted us with these positions expect us to have a comprehensive understanding of the complexities of law and how consistency and continuity of verdicts will be ensured over time. This being said, I believe that the case involving the unfortunate explorers is one of greater importance than most. The verdict we reach will decide if this court is truly one of fairness and law. The facts of the case are such: the four indicted men murdered one of their co-explorers, they did so knowing that there may be legal consequences, and they were not unstable enough to rule that they were acting completely out of a civil state of mind. While there were unique and extreme extenuating circumstances that undoubtedly had an effect on their decisions, we cannot allow emotional reaction and sympathy to cloud our legal judgment. Based on the facts and my understanding of my role as a justice of this court, the only decision we should reach would be to charge the men with murder. I believe that we must first establish that, considering the extreme circumstances of entrapment and isolation that the four men were subject to, it would be logical to assume that they...

THE CASE OF THE SPELUNCEAN EXPLORERS by LON L. FULLER IN THE S UPREME COURT OF NEWGARTH , 4300 The defendants, having been indicted for the crime of murder, were convicted and sentenced to be hanged by the Court of General Instances of the County of Stowfield. They bring a petition of error before this Court. The facts sufficiently appear in the opinion of the Chief Justice. TRUEPENNY, C. J. The four defendants are members of the Speluncean Society, an organization of amateurs interested in the exploration of caves. Early in May of 4299 they, in the company of Roger Whetmore, then also a member of the Society, penetrated into the interior of a limestone cavern of the type found in the Central Plateau of this Commonwealth. While they were in a position remote from the entrance to the cave, a landslide occurred. Heavy boulders fell in such a manner as to block completely the only known opening to the cave. When the men discovered their predicament they settled themselves near the obstructed entrance to wait until a rescue party should remove the detritus that prevented them from leaving their underground prison. On the failure of Whetmore and the defendants to return to their homes, the Secretary of the Society was notified by their families. It appears that the explorers had left indications...

...called life, and that we have the opportunity to explore. To put this in perspective, each page in the book of life details your story. In this reflective narrative, I would like to use; Arthur Miller's - 'The Crucible', and Mortem Tyldum's - 'The Imitation Game' to underline why you should make the most of life through exploring the world that is yours. I believe that through Authority English, I have been inspired to explore myself. To explore is to traverse, or discover new things, or regions. I believe this is demonstrated in the texts chosen, as we are taken on an adventure of a lifetime through the eyes of our protagonists from start to finish. Moreover, discovery, and traverse are featured. These are both attributes belonging to the explorer archetype. For some, curiosity is naturally thrust upon us and we are driven to explore...

...How is the initial material being researched and developed at significant stages during the process of creating drama? Explored using the grid, tron , how you experimented with it - How effectively are you personally exploring and developing your role(s)? As our piece was centered on the Disinhibition effect we allocated its five factors to each member in the group, to generate ideas for individual scenes and characters. I explored the ‘It’s just a game’ theory, which concerns the concept of escapism and imagination, where people may view cyberspace as a kind of game where the normal rules of everyday interaction don’t apply to them. Through the depiction of the phrases ‘escapism’, ‘imagination’, and ‘game’ I was immediately able to match the concept with the social entertainment website, IMVU, where members use avatars to create their fantasy world online – corresponding with the notion of avoiding reality. Using this idea of IMVU in facilitating a scene, I was able to carry out research on the website to begin forming a role. My character being a middle-aged woman was brought about through my findings that, with core members on the site being between the ages of 18-24, only 7% of active individuals are 35 plus. I thought this would be interesting to explore as with core members for the site being between the ages of 18-24, only 7% of individuals active are 35 plus – which I thought would be interesting to explore. ...I am very distressed about living in this dreadful place. I absolutely hate it; I can’t believe we moved from the best house EVER!!! With 5 floors if you included the basement and the top floor with the window where if I stand on the end of my toes I could see the whole of Berlin, to this place which I’m pretty sure is the worst house ever. I miss Berlin so much but most of all I miss you and grandfather. This house is really small too, and I mean it is tiny! It only has 3 floors which means there is not a lot of exploring to be done like in Berlin, in Berlin I had explored every single place I could think of but then I find something new all of a sudden. Also mother and father don’t let me explore in the new back garden because it is ‘out of bounds’. What ever that means. There’s nothing to explore in the front garden either because it’s so small. Perplexed, I stood and gazed through my bedroom window. There were so many farmers working on one huge field with little huts that disappeared into the distance… The thing that horrified me most of all was that even kids starting from the age of about 4 were working and they looked so anorexic. Each time the soldiers shouted the kids would huddle closer and closer together. They all seemed so scared as if they were being forced to, hmmm... All of the farmers looked really skinny, almost anorexic. One of the farmers’ even works in our kitchen peeling all of the vegetables. I found it really tedious with nothing to do so I decided...

...Distinctive voices distinguish individuals’ unique backgrounds and circumstances and further humanity’s understanding of the world. The interplay of distinctive voices in texts allow the composers to explore the complexity of human experience. Joanna Burns criticises modern society in particular its lack of compassion and empathy for the community and society in her poems “Kindling”, “Australia” and “Public Places”. Similarly, The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Nelson Mandela’s address when he was released from prison in 1990 also observe the idiosyncrasies of human experience and the psychological and emotional worlds of the characters through the interplay of imagery and language techniques. Distinctive voices has the ability to explore and criticise modern society’s behaviours and actions. This idea is explored in the poems “Australia” and “Kindling” in which Joanna Burns criticises the media’s lack of emotion and empathy. Australia explores the media’s clinical and desensitized response to a woman’s tragic and accidental death. In the first stanzagraph, the woman is described as snorkelling for “soft fleshy scallops” and “warm dreamy Sunday nights” and this use of soft sounds and vivid imagery establishes the poem with a tranquil and calm tone. However, this is juxtaposed with the sudden change of tone in the second stanzagraph which suddenly reports that “there had been a splash, she had been bitten in half” and the repetition of “had been” in passive voice highlights...

...“The Blast in Centralia No. 5: A Mine Disaster No One Stopped” by John Bartlow Martin. Reprinted by permission of Harold Ober Associates Incorporated. Copyright 1948 by John Bartlow Martin. Copyright renewed 1975 by John Bartlow Martin. Overview The title of this case study alone insinuates that perhaps this mine disaster could have been prevented. Martin opens his case study with very descriptive and gruesome details about the events that lead up to the explosion. Martin states: “One hundred and eleven men were killed in that explosion. Killed needlessly, for almost everybody concerned had known for months, even years, that the mine was dangerous. Yet nobody had done anything effective about it” (Stillman 31). Initially, the thought and idea that a community would allow such a horrific event to occur that could have been prevented is terrifying and somewhat startling. Martin uses his case study to explore various questions regarding this mine disaster as well as the background and other potential issues surrounding the explosion. Purpose The overall goal of this case study is to place an emphasis on how dependent modern day society is on public administration to handle chaotic or unexpected situations. In exploring various aspects of this catastrophe, Martin explores the following: (1). A coal company sensitive only to profit incentives. (2). State regulatory agencies inadequately enforcing mine safety legislation. (3). Federal officials and...

Skrzynecki, using the powerful textual vehicle of poetry explores the importance of the journeying process and its various outcomes, a journey often results in the confused and mixed emotions of the traveller and this was reflected within Skrzynecki's poems, "Crossing the Red Sea" and "A Drive in the Country." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step..."
