Its hard to believe but Facebook is only 11 years old and it connects more people than any other company ever has. The number of people using Facebook is staggering. They claim more than 1.2 billion with more and more signing up everyday and this is without most of China. Unfortunately for folks in main land China the government continues to block Facebook and instead they are using knock off versions of Facebook. Two of the more popular Chinese versions called QQ and Renren.

Facebook has changed the way we keep in touch. First the Internet connected the world and then Facebook has made the world smaller. People use it to stay in touch with loved ones and old friends but also use it to contact with new acquaintances. Some people say that nothing is “free” but for the most part the individual user pays nothing…at least for now. It has changed the way we share our lives with others and is a unique way in which people can express themselves.

In addition to expression, it also changed the way people consume information. Facebook users get up-to-date information on friends but it has also become an outlet for news, politics, sports, references, and entertainment. Since the information on Facebook goes both ways privacy issues have arisen and it has changed the way we look at what’s private and what’s not. Facebook collects enormous amounts of data and several lawsuits have been brought against the company as a result of how they have elected to use that data.

Facebook is rapidly becoming the platform of choice in American politics. Many politicians use Facebook

Impact of Social Media on the Financial Services Industry

...Impact of Social Media on the Financial Services Industry: In today’s age everyone is well aware of the significant impact that social media has had on our lives in the way we communicate, socialise, conduct business and view the world. This case study however, will attempt to narrow the scope of this theme, by looking specifically at the way in which social media has influenced the financial services industry. The evolution of social media has facilitated a change in the nature of the relationship between institutions and consumers within the financial services sector. Not all of these changes have, however, had a positive effect on financial institutions. Media convergence and the growth of user-generated content has blurred the lines between different platforms of media, and the distinction between producers and consumers (Australian Communications and Media Authority, 2011). For example, Peter Schiff, an American stockbroker and CEO of Euro Pacific Capital, has used...

And 20% more of Facebook-using students (as compared to students who didn’t use Facebook) said they felt connected to their school and community. However, negative effects abound. Students who use Facebook and hit the books simultaneously found their multitasking led to 20% lower grades than those of their more focused peers. Facebook-using students also made less money during school from part-time work, putting in around five hours per week as opposed to 16 hours per week for a typical, unplugged counterpart.
