...------------------------------------------------- “Hey Mom, What’s on Your Facebook? Comparing Facebook Disclosure and Privacy in Adolescents and Adults “ Abstract: People of all ages are increasingly exposed to online environments that encourage them to share and connect with others. However, there is a perception that adolescents are particularly susceptible to these cues and share more online than do other age groups. With a group of 288 adolescents and 285 adults, we explored differences and similarities in use of Facebook for information sharing and use of the controls to protect their privacy. Adolescents reported disclosing more information on Facebook and using the privacy settings less than adults. Despite these differences, the results indicated that adolescents and adults were more similar than different in the factors that predicted information disclosure and control. Adolescents spent more time on Facebook, which partially mediated the relationship between group (adolescents vs. adults) and disclosure. Self-esteem partially mediated the relationship between group and information control, with adults having higher self-esteem than adolescents. Readings: Keywords privacy, self-disclosure, social media, online communication The news is filled with stories about the dangers of sharing personal information online, the difficulties in protecting personal privacy, and the privacy challenges of websites such as Google and Facebook. Despite wide proclamations that ‘‘pri-...

...Case Study: Facebook: It’s Not Just for Kids Facebook has become a social networking phenomenon. A place for people all over the world to connect, play games, share photos, and now days shop. While other social networking sites are meeting the status quo Facebook is setting itself apart by keeping the site new and exciting. Facebook is currently the fourth most trafficked site on the web. (Facebook: It's Not Just for Kids) However, even as Facebook is gearing up to expand they still have challenges to overcome if they want to stay on top of the social networking empire. People from all walks of life have discovered the joys of Facebook. However, a recent study by Spruce Advisors found that a large majority of Facebook users are extroverts and narcissistic. Facebook gives these personality types an additional platform to socialize and to promote themselves with the ability to upload an unlimited amount of pictures (there is nothing worse than a friend who uploads pictures of themselves three times a day!) and the ability to update their status every minute of the day. Many of these faithful Facebook fans have a large number of virtual friends and they tend to stay connected. On the other hand, Facebook gives the introverts a large assortment of games and other apps to utilize while still keeping them in contract with their small network of friends and family. The ability Facebook has to appeal to the extroverts and introverts in and of itself gives Facebook the potential...

There is a compulsion factor to it because not browsing on Facebook creates anxiety among addicts. It is considered to be an urge because browsing through Facebook can be a pleasurable experience. Facebook is one of the most popular social networking sites and has over 600 million users globally. There are seven symptoms to suggest Facebook addiction. These are spending excessive time browsing through Facebook, sharing one’s secrets on the website, being extremely concerned about updating and creating a favourable image on Facebook, checking the website for updates every now and then, continuously adding new friends, reporting on Facebook and not engaging in an offline social life. A recent academic study further reveals that excessive addiction to social networking sites can lead to signs of withdrawal. Individuals isolate themselves from family and friends. Further signs of Facebook addiction have been linked with short and poor sleep patterns. Scholarly research on Facebook addiction has been associated adversely with conscientiousness and favorably with extra-version. Researchers have also tried to analyze certain individual personality traits to the addiction. ...Facebook Discussion Questions 1. How does Facebook’s privacy management of users’ personal information affect the behavior of Facebook patrons? = Well, Facebook, generates most of its revenue from targeted advertisements based on user’s demography and interest, so the more data users share publicly the more money it can mint from ads (Nelson & Quick, 2013). Let’s say for example I don’t publish my likes and dislikes on Facebook. Then they will have to find a way to push me into doing that. The moment I go in and enter that information I will be immediately targeted as a consumer with certain needs and Facebook will be the platform that will bring them to me. 2. Being a college student you are likely a Facebook user. What is your opinion regarding how Facebook deals with privacy issues? What have you done (or decided not to do) with regard to protecting your privacy on Facebook (or other social networking sites)? =As a college student I do have a Facebook. In my opinion, if Facebook is seeking to become dominant on the internet they should follow through on providing privacy for its users and personal choice. I don’t agree that as a user, you really don’t have control of the privacy in your page. Even though I have a page, I don’t like to post all my information there or any other social networking site. I have never believed that you are totally protected. I always recommended my family and close friends not to put personal data (phone number, address, private...

...The report written by, Christopher J. Carpenter, makes an attempt to correlate social media sites to narcissistic behavior. The research of the report goes in depth examining one possible predictor of narcissistic behavioral use of social media sites. The research conducted was in depth and it also examined narcissistic personality traits, the history of the narcissistic personality inventory (NPI) and narcissism on Facebook. The NPI includes aspects such as ‘‘a grandiose sense of self-importance or uniqueness,’’ ‘‘an inability to tolerate criticism,’’ and ‘‘entitlement or the expectation of special favors without assuming reciprocal responsibilities.’’ METHOD: According to the report written by Carpenter “there were 294 participants in the survey whose ages ranged from 18 to 65 years ( M = 23.26, SD = 7.30)” of the 294 participants “74.1% were college students and 68% were female”. The participants were not compensated for the participation and according to the research they were recruited by “the members of an undergraduate research methods course in a medium sized Midwestern, American university”. The research also indicates all the participants were Facebook users. The instrument used in the research was a scale ranging from ‘‘strongly disagree’’ to ‘‘strongly agree’’ to measure a particular item listed. ...the Relationship of Facebook Usage and Loneliness Research Proposal (it was NOT conducted) Abstract The popularity of Facebook among internet users has increased, yet at the same time people start noticing the negative life influence that Facebook brings to its users. The present study furthers our understanding in how the use of Facebook affects one’s feeling of loneliness among fresh graduates who are experiencing life changing events. We look at the number of Facebook friends users have, the amount of time they spend on Facebook, the number of status posted, the number of post liked by others, and the number of pieces of personal information they share. We expect to see a strong correlation between general Facebook use and users’ sense of loneliness. However, the number of like received from others might not have a direct relationship with users’ loneliness. Result of our study could be applied to the educational field, where both teachers and students could benefit. Introduction As social media is getting more popular, Facebook is one of the few social networking sites that have generated great attention. It provides people a platform for communication and a wide range of functions, such as posting status reflecting their daily lives, liking other’s status or photo by clicking the thumb, and to share users’ personal data with others. According to the Statistics Portal (2014), Facebook is the world's leading social networking websites with 1,280 million...

...UNIVERSITY TITLE: CASE STUDY OF FACEBOOK CHRISTINE ONYANGO Facebook is a social networking site that was created by Mark Zuckerberg and Eduardo Saverin in 2004 driven by the urge to connect the world and create a mirror of the real world community rather than just an online community. By that time, there were a few such sites already in existence; MySpace and Friendster. These sites would at times face technical instability and had a lot of distracting advertisements. What made the big difference for Facebook is that the founders focus on the market and customize their site depending on what they deem fit for it. (Adam Hartung, 2011) in Forbes’ blog, stated that Zack’s willingness to let the business to go wherever the market wanted it, is one of the factors that led to the rise of Facebook. Some of the things for instance include; adding the capability to upload photos and identify the people on those photos as well as “tag” your friends on pictures and videos, game applications that basically allowed people to play games and the news feed feature was a great innovation that allows people to view “news” as posted by their Facebook friends. At the start, the founders came up with a fund of $1,000 to be able to launch the site. Later on in the same year, Peter Thiel made an angel investment of $ 500,000 for 10.2% of the company. In 2005, Accel Investment made a $12.7 million venture capital investment and then joined the board. In 2006 Facebook received $27.5 million from Greylock...

Since their establishment, concerns regarding undesirable society norms have become progressively transparent. For instance, questions involving a person’s ethical or moral standards start cultivating once numerous undesirable traits are found online about that person. Vital concerns regarding the transparency of personal information existing online have given rise to behavioral studies. These studies such as the one done by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project suggested, roughly fifty percent of internet users are worried about information posted online. Additionally the study mentions around eighty-six percent of the people surveyed had partaken in one or more methods for cloaking their online activity (Flaherty, 2013). Without hesitation, businesses adapted to these missteps and started screening their existing and potential job applicant’s online presence.
