...“Nike: Just Do It” By Adam Fernald ETH/316 John Bevell In the past Nike has been accused of using child labor in the production of its soccer balls and sweatshop conditions in suppliers’ overseas factories. Nike has about 28,000 employees globally and over 800,000 workers who are employed by its suppliers in 52 countries and create sports and fitness footwear, apparel, equipment, and accessories for worldwide distribution (Trevino, L.K. & Nelson, K.A., 2011). Nike has worked to improve labor conditions in their footwear, apparel and equipment supply chains for more than 15 years. Key issues in which they have engaged include the health and safety of the workers who make their products, excessive overtime, the ability of workers to freely associate, and child labor and forced labor (Nike Inc., Labor, 2013). Since these accusations were brought to the publics attentions Nike has been focused on improving the monitoring of the organizations supply chain, sent auditors to evaluate conditions and enforce the company code. About a decade after Nike was first targeted they released factory names and locations of their suppliers. A MIT professor was brought in to assess Nikes audit data and the results were disappointing. Most suppliers’ factories had not improved, and some even got worse (Trevino, L.K. & Nelson, K.A., 2011). Nike's entrance into the Pakistani markets was the part of its long term strategic planning. Although Pakistan has laws against child labor...

...Current Events in Business Research RES/351 July 28, 2014 Annette West Current Events in Business Research For the purpose of this assignment I ended up going in two totally different directions. Initially I wanted to research “burn out” on the job as I personally feel it and I personally see it every day at work, but in the end I decided to research on a second issue at my place of employment and that is “working off the clock”. I began working for my current employer, the federal government, in 2009. Since that time I have noticed the common practice of the expectation of my fellow workers and myself, without specifically being asked, to perform our duties and not report our time that was in excess of eight hours per day. Most recently I was asked by our local Union to become a Union Stewart and since accepting that position I wanted to research as to why this is normal practice and how we can go about correcting this issue. In researching the University’s Electronic Reserve Readings I have decided to use a paper labeled “Working off the Clock and Its Impact.” To begin with I believe it is common knowledge that it is against federal law to allow any employee to work outside of their normal working hours without compensation. According to the Department of Labor’s (DOL) website “the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) prescribes standards for wages and overtime pay, which affect most private and public employment. The act is administered by the Wage and Hour Division....

...Ehsan Faraz 9/24/13 Film 160 Ethnic Symbolism in Pocahontas In Walt Disney’s Pocahontas (1955), the adventures of a young Native Virginia Indian woman in her early twenties are portrayed as she roams the forest to search for what the meaning to her life truly is. She is a free spirit who lives with the nature of the world around her and is very attached to its beauty. Once the Englishmen invade the Indians’ territory in search of new land to conquer, things begin to change. There is a shift of tone from innocence to savagery as they come looking for gold and are willing to do anything to get their hands on it. Through this clash of two different civilizations, the filmmakers adequately display the mixing of two opposing peoples and how their relationship ultimately affects the outcome of their situations. Early in the film, Pocahontas is very lonely and often spends most of her time away from her village. When she first meets John Smith, she doesn’t approach him directly, but instead, her raccoon meeko sneaks up to Smith and eats a cookie from him. This is a common way of introducing two characters because there is often anther person or object that will initiate the conversation or make the first move. It also indicates that the Indians are modest and unaware of what is about to happen to them. When John Smith meets Pocahontas, he is at first as prejudice as all the other men and ignorant to the Powhatan tribe as being a friendly people. Nonetheless after Pocahontas...

...This is a group assignment. Please arrange yourselves into groups of 4 (one team may have 5) and submit your team names within the next week. The project will be due around 09April13 depending on how our classes progress. ASSIGNMENT Group members: Faraz Syed, Zheng Kang Qu, Shu Jun Wan, Timothy Leancy You and your team are members of a small consulting company that has been engaged recently by the Fitter Snacker Company (FS). They feel that because you have broad business process experience and no affiliations with any commercial software packages, your firm could give them good advice. FS is growing but is experiencing many business process problems throughout the company and it seems to be getting worse as time passes. Some of FS’s customers are considering using other suppliers for their snack bar products. FS doesn’t want to lose any customers and in fact would really like to expand their operation into other states, maybe Canada and possibly western Europe in the not so distant future. FS feels that their current business processes aren’t really up to much expansion. Some of the younger managers at FS have read that ERP systems can really help companies like FS and have been pressuring the upper management to look into acquiring such a system. Some of the managers have put forward the SAP ECC6.0 ERP system as one they should definitely consider, but no commitments have been made. Your team has been asked to do the following: * Review FS’s main business processes...

It also mentioned that “women and men perceive mobile phones and their usage differently (Ozhan, 2004)”. It has revealed also that female consumers have much time to open and read SMS advertisements and they respond more to SMS advertisements than males. “Fareena and Andrew (2008:39) for instance, suggest that young consumers intention to participate in mobile marketing (SMS advertising) is influenced by hedonic purpose ( that is, fun or entertainment) and functional purpose( that is obtaining incentives and information)” . According to the (World Conference on Culture Policies, Mexico 1982)Culture is “the whole complex of distinctive spiritual, material, intellectual and emotional features that characterize a society or social group. ...IMPACT OF CROWDSOURSCING ON DESIRE WEBSEARCH SYED FARAZ-UL-HASAN UNIVERSITY OF TASMANIA Email: farazulhassan@hotmail.com PHONE NO: 0468934400 ABSTRACT: This paper examines the impact of crowdsourcing on search result ranking by identifying the relation between crowdsourcing and web search. Here the question arise, what are the reasons that compel me to search this category i-e crowdsourcing and search result ranking. To me, it is very beneficial for us as student of computing to know about the relation of crowdsourcing with web technology. How much is impact-able if we add it as ingredient in our searching results for finding good webpages is understandable after reading this paper. Crowdsourcing is a term coined by Jeff Howe in wired magazine to characterize a way of using groups to solve the problem [1].The groups are usually online communities, such as member s of a blog or a visitor of website. An organization broadcast the problem to the crowd as an open call for solution. The crowd submit solution, and then sort through them, find the best one. The organization selects and owns the ultimate solution, and sometimes rewards members of the crowd. As this paper also explain the application aspect of crowdsourcing when it merge with web-technology. KEYWORDS: Crowdsourcing, WEB 2.0, Social networking. ...Two-Tier Corporate Governance Model for Pakistan Tasleem Faraz Minhas1, Saif Ullah2 1 Research Scholar, National University of Modern Languages, Lahore 2 Faculty members in Management sciences, National University of Modern Languages, Lahore Introduction As the business environment is continuously evolving so as the concept of corporate governance. The European Economic Community (EEC), General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and World Trade Organization (WTO) regulations have also contributed to the rising awareness and are compelling us to think in terms of adhering to the good governance practices. Corporate governance, by the very nature of the concept, cannot be exactly defined. However, there can be no two opinions that “effective accountability to all shareholders is the essence of corporate governance.” It is the set of process, customs, policies, laws, and institutions affecting the way a corporation (or company) is directed, administered or controlled. “Corporate governance refers to the manner in which the affairs of a corporate body are or should be conducted in order to serve and protect the individual and collective interests of all stakeholders” (Butt 2008) According to OECD “Corporate Governance is the system by which business corporations are directed and controlled. The corporate governance structure specifies the distribution of rights and responsibilities among different participants in the corporation, such as...
