Girl Trafficking in Nepal
Tens of thousands of Nepalese girls and women are trafficked each year. They end up in brothels as sex workers or in homes and factories as slaves. They are trafficked within Nepal and to countries such as India, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Hong Kong and the UAE.
Nepal is traditionally a patriarchal society where women in general and girl children in particular are treated as second class citizens. While this is changing in the cities and larger towns where people are more educated, discrimination still exists in rural areas, especially among low caste and marginalized indigenous communities. Girls are simply not valued as much as their brothers.
This discrimination manifests itself in many ways, but one of the most insidious is the failure to understand the significance educating a girl child. One of the reasons girls are valued less is because, traditionally, they have not been educated. And if they have little value, why educate them. This self perpetuating spiral of ignorance and worthlessness results in girls being seen as expendable commodities, at least in relation to boys, and known risks are put aside if there is a chance that she can find work and send back much needed cash to her family.
Girls and their families are tricked with promises of good paying jobs in glamorous cities, lured by proposals of marriage from handsome strangers and sometimes just taken and sold by middlemen known as dalals. Nepal is a source country for many migrant workers and this has brought a new threat; dalals now pose as manpower agents, actually taking money from the families of the girls, promising to find them work in another country, then selling them on as slaves.

Our Solution
Our solution is quite simple:
Keep at risk girls in school and they don’t get trafficked for sex work, domestic slavery and they don’t become child brides.
RHEST relieves the financial burden of the costs of education; uniforms, books, fees, pens and pencils and counsels families on the importance of educating girls.
Once in the program, we keep an eye on their progress and attendance and offers encouragement and support. The girls, their families and communities are visited regularly by RHEST staff who talk with them about risks young girls face, the importance of education and the rights of women and children.
Our solution also works:
When we start working in a certain area, often we have to go door to door, persuading reluctant parents to allow their daughters to go to school. After the community sees how valuable educated girls are, families start to bring their daughters to us without any need of coercion. We have even seen families recognize the changes in their community values enrolling their daughters in school without the financial support of RHEST.
We also know our solution works because in two decades since the program started, over ten thousand girls have been touched by RHEST and not one has been lost to trafficking – NOT ONE! * Stop Girl Trafficking

Man gets 25-year jail for trafficking of girls
- Anup Ojha
BHAKTAPUR, NOV 11 - The Bhaktapur District Court has slapped a man with 25-year jail sentence and Rs 225,000 fine after he was found guilty of trafficking girls to the bordering Chinese town of Khasa.
A single bench of Judge Lekhanath Dhakal on Monday announced the verdict against 29-year-old Ashimanraj Tamang after the court found him guilty of trafficking two Nepali girls to Khasa and selling them to a brothel operator there. The court has also ordered Tamang to pay a compensation amount of Rs 125,000 to each victim.
Tamang was arrested last year by a team from the Boarder Police Station (BPS) with the help of a monitoring team of Maiti Nepal, a non-profit organisation that works against human trafficking. The girls, however, escaped from the brothel and lodged a complain against Tamang at Maiti Nepal.
According to Sajani Joshi, a layer at Maiti Nepal, Tamang had taken three girls to Khasa. The whereabouts of the third girl is still unknown. A permanent resident of Dolakha, Tamang has been serving time in Dillibazar prison since April after the Kathmandu District Court had sentenced him to 20 years with a fine of Rs 200,000 in another case related to human trafficking.
According to Maiti Nepal, the trend of trafficking young girls to Khasha is on the rise. Traffickers are found to have lured young girls from Sindhupalchok, Rasuwa, Dolakha and other districts and forced them into prostitution in the Tibetan town across the border.
“During a survey visit to Khasa four years, our team had found as many as 150 Nepali girls working as sex workers. Police report suggests the number has doubled since,” Joshi said. Maiti Nepal has rescued 37 girls from Khasha so far.
“We have found that pimps take girls from dance bars and massage parlours in Kathmandu and Pokhara to the Chinese town on a temporary boarder pass,” said Keshav Shah, inspector at BPS. Most of the traffickers hail from Sindhupalchok and Dolakha districts as the border immigration office issues free passes for people of Sindhupalchok district to cross over to Khasha for a year.
“People from these districts have a better knowledge of Khasha bazaar where many Nepalis are running dance bars and cabin restaurants too,” said Shah. At least 25 dance bars and dozens of cabin restaurants operate in Khasa, according to police.

Bhaktapur Police have rescued a woman who was trafficked to Meghalaya in India with a false promise of marriage.
“Police rescued Sunita Khattri and brought her back to Bhaktapur on June 9 from Meghalaya”, said Bikash Shrestha, Superintendent of Police (SP) at Bhaktapur Metropolitan Police.
The 21-year old originally from Thangpalkot-2 in Sindhupalchowk, was working at an Offset Press at Byasi in Bhaktapur district when 17 year old Suman Tamang courted her .
Tamang of Shikharbesi-9 Nuwakot, who worked at the same place, is said to have courted and promised to marry her before taking her to India, according to SP Shrestha.
The investigation has unveiled that the gullible girl believed the 17-year-old and followed him to India on June 1 to settle down there as per the boy’s plan.
Khatri told police that Tamang had brought her to Kathmandu first. After spending the night in a guesthouse, she was taken to Chitwan and past the Nepal-India borders nest day with a pretext of taking her on a tour before marrying.
Eventually she ended up in Meghalaya in Shilong via Silgudi surrounded by eight men.
Luckily, just before she was handed over to a Nepali speaking woman in Meghalaya, another woman, Sangita Shrestha, who also spoke Nepali came to her rescue.
After seeing Khatri refusing to go with the woman, Shrestha is said to have intervened and informed the police.
Tamang along with his accomplices fled as soon as the woman threatened to call the police, investigation revealed.
Both Nepali and Indian police are in the hunt for Tamang. RSS Rfepublica

...Harrison Bergeron is set in the year 2081 where everything in society is fully equal in order to disallow people from being ugly, having weaknesses, etc. Instead of police and a president, the government is run and enforced by the Handicapper General and her team of agents. The main characters Hazel and her husband, George, are watching ballerinas dance on the television. George is intelligent and due to that intelligence, he must wear headphones that create sounds that distract him from thinking, while Hazel is not as bright; therefore, she does not have to wear headphones and can only think for certain amounts of time. Their son, Harrison, was captured at the age of fourteen by the government, but they are not completely aware of him being gone. While George and Hazel are watching the ballerinas, Harrison appears having escaped from prison and he rips off all of his handicaps that make him equal and reveals his true form, similar to a god. He begins to dance in the air with one of the ballerinas and both of them are then shot by the Handicapper General, leaving them both dead. Hazel and George witness the act, but forget about it immediately with no recollection as to what had just occurred except for Hazel’s tears. The stress on equality in this society is detrimental to the society itself. Although the idea of everyone being equal seems perfect and is what we as a world strive for, a world with perfect equality does not the drive the world and its societies to be better....

Ousley_____________________________ 1. How did the teacher initiate instruction? Was it effective? There was a bell ringer on the board that students started on as soon as they entered the classroom. Yes, this seemed to be an effective strategy for getting the class instruction started while she took role. 2. What rules, routines, and procedures did you observe in the classroom? Students were required to be recognized by the teacher before asking a question. She also used “Give me 5”when needing the classrooms attention. Students handed the teacher their exit assignment on their way out the door so she could see who had not completed it. 3. Describe 2 strategies that you may want to use in your own classroom. I really liked that she hand collected the exit assignment when students were going out the door to check for completion of the assignment. She said she could do a quick scan as they handed it to her to see if they “got it”. She also used a song to introduce slop that she found on youtube. She said it was part of the whole brain technique that the school district is adopting. 4. Describe 2 things about this observation that you might do differently. ...An Analysis of Linux Scalability to Many Cores Silas Boyd-Wickizer, Austin T. Clements, Yandong Mao, Aleksey Pesterev, M. Frans Kaashoek, Robert Morris, and Nickolai Zeldovich MIT CSAIL A BSTRACT This paper analyzes the scalability of seven system applications (Exim, memcached, Apache, PostgreSQL, gmake, Psearchy, and MapReduce) running on Linux on a 48core computer. Except for gmake, all applications trigger scalability bottlenecks inside a recent Linux kernel. Using mostly standard parallel programming techniques— this paper introduces one new technique, sloppy counters—these bottlenecks can be removed from the kernel or avoided by changing the applications slightly. Modifying the kernel required in total 3002 lines of code changes. A speculative conclusion from this analysis is that there is no scalability reason to give up on traditional operating system organizations just yet. but the other applications scale poorly, performing much less work per core with 48 cores than with one core. We attempt to understand and fix the scalability problems, by modifying either the applications or the Linux kernel. We then iterate, since fixing one scalability problem usually exposes further ones. The end result for each application is either good scalability on 48 cores, or attribution of non-scalability to a hard-to-fix problem with the application, the Linux kernel, or the underlying hardware. The analysis of whether the kernel design is compatible with scaling rests on the extent to which...

...In an organized religion debate, Alan Dershowitz and Alan Keyes contended many issues on religion and morality. Alan Dershowitz, a Harvard law professor, believed that “morality can be maintained without religion.” He also stated that it must be maintained without religion because times have changed. He said that if religion is not separated from state it could have severe damage, such as the Crusades and the Holocaust. Dershowitz believes that there is a difference between morality and religion. When people are moral without religion, they are being virtuous on their own, not because they are afraid of God. He stated that religion should not consist of a Cost-Benefit Analysis. Alan Keyes, a former Republican presidential candidate, stated that religion sets the standard for what’s moral. Keyes argued “power only ultimately respects another power,” and Martin Luther King Jr. was not a preacher byaccident. Dershowitz also stated that not everything in the Bible should be believed word-for-word, even George Washington said “indulge religion with caution.” Keyes believed that if state and religion should be separated, then why does the Declaration of Independence contain so much about religion? Alan Dershowitz and Alan Keyes would have argued endlessly about religion’s role in society if there were not a moderator to stop them. Religion and morality exist together in parallel according to Alan Keyes. Alan Dershowitz stated that if religion and morality are not separated, it could...

...Susanna Zhang Eacs 4B Section 6pm During Lu Xun’s study in Japan, some topics that he was interested in were “What are the qualities of the ideal human, what does the Chinese character lack most, What is the source of illness.” This made me pause for a little while and try to answer these questions myself. Just like Lu Xun, I was also surprised that his mother called him back to China was for an arranged marriage to a girl that he has never met. Usually in novels, we hear the women’s point of view in the marriage. The author then goes on talking about Lu Hsun’s literary work. The author says “many of his stories are flawed, though they are genuine by virtue of their depth, strength, and gravity.” You can tell that Lu Xun was a great write through the words the author uses in describing each work as “masterpiece” in “Madman’s Diary”, “transcends cultural boundaries and should reach the reader’s heart” in “New Years Sacrifice,” ect. I learned that Mao admired and respected Lu Hsun and “hailed him as the commander of China’s cultural revolution.” The author comes up with three reasons for this. First, Lu Xun’s literature was based on utilitarianism, secondly, he “subsumed literature and arts under politics”, and finally because Lu Xun was a “relentless fighter.” One of my favorite articles was a “Madman’s Diary.” The narrator had illusions that the doctor was going to eat him and that his own brother was the doctor’s accomplice. When the narrator says “ I know their way;...

These crimes are then passed on to the courtroom for prosecution. Law and order is a crime-based drama, with a mixture of ‘court-room’ and ‘detective’, TV series, mainly shown on channel five. By reading the description of the show, I immediately realised that this is a show that is based around the world of crime and how the crime is dealt with within the city of New York. It starts from finding who the criminal is and then we follow the story up to the prosecution in the court room. Words such as ‘courtroom, ‘rape’, ‘victim’, ‘detective’ immediately grabs the reader’s attention, giving us the impression of the type of genre this TV series is. The picture that accompanies the description also shows that the genre of this series is crime as the main detective is pulling out her police badge and is what the...
