...Harrison Bergeron is set in the year 2081 where everything in society is fully equal in order to disallow people from being ugly, having weaknesses, etc. Instead of police and a president, the government is run and enforced by the Handicapper General and her team of agents. The main characters Hazel and her husband, George, are watching ballerinas dance on the television. George is intelligent and due to that intelligence, he must wear headphones that create sounds that distract him from thinking, while Hazel is not as bright; therefore, she does not have to wear headphones and can only think for certain amounts of time. Their son, Harrison, was captured at the age of fourteen by the government, but they are not completely aware of him being gone. While George and Hazel are watching the ballerinas, Harrison appears having escaped from prison and he rips off all of his handicaps that make him equal and reveals his true form, similar to a god. He begins to dance in the air with one of the ballerinas and both of them are then shot by the Handicapper General, leaving them both dead. Hazel and George witness the act, but forget about it immediately with no recollection as to what had just occurred except for Hazel’s tears. The stress on equality in this society is detrimental to the society itself. Although the idea of everyone being equal seems perfect and is what we as a world strive for, a world with perfect equality does not the drive the world and its societies to be better....

Ousley_____________________________ 1. How did the teacher initiate instruction? Was it effective? There was a bell ringer on the board that students started on as soon as they entered the classroom. Yes, this seemed to be an effective strategy for getting the class instruction started while she took role. 2. What rules, routines, and procedures did you observe in the classroom? Students were required to be recognized by the teacher before asking a question. She also used “Give me 5”when needing the classrooms attention. Students handed the teacher their exit assignment on their way out the door so she could see who had not completed it. 3. Describe 2 strategies that you may want to use in your own classroom. I really liked that she hand collected the exit assignment when students were going out the door to check for completion of the assignment. She said she could do a quick scan as they handed it to her to see if they “got it”. She also used a song to introduce slop that she found on youtube. She said it was part of the whole brain technique that the school district is adopting. 4. Describe 2 things about this observation that you might do differently. She did not use random sampling but called on students herself...

...In an organized religion debate, Alan Dershowitz and Alan Keyes contended many issues on religion and morality. Alan Dershowitz, a Harvard law professor, believed that “morality can be maintained without religion.” He also stated that it must be maintained without religion because times have changed. He said that if religion is not separated from state it could have severe damage, such as the Crusades and the Holocaust. Dershowitz believes that there is a difference between morality and religion. When people are moral without religion, they are being virtuous on their own, not because they are afraid of God. He stated that religion should not consist of a Cost-Benefit Analysis. Alan Keyes, a former Republican presidential candidate, stated that religion sets the standard for what’s moral. Keyes argued “power only ultimately respects another power,” and Martin Luther King Jr. was not a preacher byaccident. Dershowitz also stated that not everything in the Bible should be believed word-for-word, even George Washington said “indulge religion with caution.” Keyes believed that if state and religion should be separated, then why does the Declaration of Independence contain so much about religion? Alan Dershowitz and Alan Keyes would have argued endlessly about religion’s role in society if there were not a moderator to stop them. Religion and morality exist together in parallel according to Alan Keyes. Alan Dershowitz stated that if religion and morality are not separated, it could...

...Girl Trafficking in Nepal Tens of thousands of Nepalese girls and women are trafficked each year. They end up in brothels as sex workers or in homes and factories as slaves. They are trafficked within Nepal and to countries such as India, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Hong Kong and the UAE. Nepal is traditionally a patriarchal society where women in general and girl children in particular are treated as second class citizens. While this is changing in the cities and larger towns where people are more educated, discrimination still exists in rural areas, especially among low caste and marginalized indigenous communities. Girls are simply not valued as much as their brothers. This discrimination manifests itself in many ways, but one of the most insidious is the failure to understand the significance educating a girl child. One of the reasons girls are valued less is because, traditionally, they have not been educated. And if they have little value, why educate them. This self perpetuating spiral of ignorance and worthlessness results in girls being seen as expendable commodities, at least in relation to boys, and known risks are put aside if there is a chance that she can find work and send back much needed cash to her family. Girls and their families are tricked with promises of good paying jobs in glamorous cities, lured by proposals of marriage from handsome strangers and sometimes just taken and sold by middlemen known as dalals. Nepal is a source country for many migrant workers...

DAVID COXDEC 2 2013, 7:00 AM ET China’s just-loosened one-child policy has warped the country’s gender ratio over the past 34 years to the extent that by 2020 there may be almost 24 million men unable to find a partner. But in the special administrative region of Hong Kong, a jurisdiction not subject to the mainland’s laws, the landscape is startlingly different. The territory’s 2011 census revealed that there were 209,000 women living alone, a figure that is rapidly rising. It’s believed that one in five Hong Kong women born today will remain single for the rest of their lives. Phoebe, 24 and a newly qualified lawyer, is already feeling pressure to find a life partner in the next couple of years. “Most of my single girl friends are all panicking about finding their other half now because men have a tendency to favor younger girls,” she explains. “Asian men seem to be attracted to girls around 25 rather than girls over 30, so if we don't...

...Susanna Zhang Eacs 4B Section 6pm During Lu Xun’s study in Japan, some topics that he was interested in were “What are the qualities of the ideal human, what does the Chinese character lack most, What is the source of illness.” This made me pause for a little while and try to answer these questions myself. Just like Lu Xun, I was also surprised that his mother called him back to China was for an arranged marriage to a girl that he has never met. Usually in novels, we hear the women’s point of view in the marriage. The author then goes on talking about Lu Hsun’s literary work. The author says “many of his stories are flawed, though they are genuine by virtue of their depth, strength, and gravity.” You can tell that Lu Xun was a great write through the words the author uses in describing each work as “masterpiece” in “Madman’s Diary”, “transcends cultural boundaries and should reach the reader’s heart” in “New Years Sacrifice,” ect. I learned that Mao admired and respected Lu Hsun and “hailed him as the commander of China’s cultural revolution.” The author comes up with three reasons for this. First, Lu Xun’s literature was based on utilitarianism, secondly, he “subsumed literature and arts under politics”, and finally because Lu Xun was a “relentless fighter.” One of my favorite articles was a “Madman’s Diary.” The narrator had illusions that the doctor was going to eat him and that his own brother was the doctor’s accomplice. When the narrator says “ I know their way;...

Description of Law and order In the criminal justice system, sexually based offenses such as rape, torture, pedophilia and child-abuse are dealt with in New York City, by a special unit of detectives of the police department known as the Special Victims Unit. These crimes are then passed on to the courtroom for prosecution. Law and order is a crime-based drama, with a mixture of ‘court-room’ and ‘detective’, TV series, mainly shown on channel five. By reading the description of the show, I immediately realised that this is a show that is based around the world of crime and how the crime is dealt with within the city of New York. It starts from finding who the criminal is and then we follow the story up to the prosecution in the court room. Words such as ‘courtroom, ‘rape’, ‘victim’, ‘detective’ immediately grabs the reader’s attention, giving us the impression of the type of genre this TV series is. The picture that accompanies the description also shows that the genre of this series is crime as the main detective is pulling out her police badge and is what the...

Glocalization (a portmanteau of globalization and localization) is a term that describes the adaptation of international products around the particularities of a local culture in which they are sold. b. glocalization broadly involves the altering of an overarching brand or product so as to better appeal to customers within a specified country or region. This phenomenon is the relative inverse of Americanization and the suppressing of local preferences in favor of providing goods and media whose content has been dictated by foreign entities. Glocalization can also involve the use of culturally friendly media to encourage the acceptance of foreign products among a local audience c.
