Fight Night
Smack! I remember the thud following the force to her face. She laid there with no movement. We had paused to see if she was still alive before making any more comments. Even Bria hesitated before she ferociously walked away from the scene. At this point, I thought the fight was over. As a truck approached in the mist of the chaos, the high beams from the headlights reflect the oozing blood coming from her nose and mouth. She stood semi-confident across the street. Over the loud rap music and bass, I faintly heard her say, “I want my ‘one’ again.” Those are the words I did not expect to hear her say.
It was summer time of 2011. A time of the year I stayed out during late nights and woke up late in the noon. I had a routine of hanging out with my 17 year old cousin Bria in Hopewell. We usually made up our day spontaneously. However, this particular day was planned pretty well. On this day, we made plans to go watch her boyfriend play in a football Scrimmage. She planned to go with me and four of her friends. I was always the younger one out of the bunch, or what everyone else called me “the baby”, so I never really said much when they conversed among each other. Most of the time I did not say much because I usually did not know who or what they were talking about. Only a few times I would recognize a name here and there. The days I hung out with Bria, were always my exciting days. There was never a dull moment with her. Still, like any regular day that we hung out, this day still did not turn out as planned.
We arrived at Merner Field around 5:00 pm that day. As we walked around the track I could hear the faint sounds of clashing helmets followed by the masculine grunts in the middle of the football field. However, the sound of my cousin and her four friends’ voices were most vivid. They were being loud and jocular as usual. They made fun of anyone they could think of or see in front of them. Bria made fun of one of the football players and how they always breathe like they needed and inhaler but had no asthma. Another girl made fun of the football coach’s bald head, making me and the others laugh hysterically. In the mist of us joking, one of her friends named Kiana burst out “Oh yeah! Bria, Ebony has been going around saying she is looking for you and she wants her ‘one’”. I did not take her seriously the first time, being that we were all just laughing and joking a few seconds ago. I do not think that anyone took Kiana’s statement serious.
Around 5:30, Kiana’s phone begins to ring violently. She gave a disgusted face before answering the phone and then says, “Hello?” About twenty seconds later I heard her say, “aight,” and then she hung up the phone. We all looked at Kiana, waiting for her to tell us who it was on the phone and what was going on. Then she looked at Bria and said, “That was Ebony and she said she wants her ‘one’ tonight”. After hearing that, everyone was in absolute disbelief. Everyone knew not to mess with Bria. She was like a pretty little cat that would always beat the dog if it provoked her. She always won, losing was just not in her nature. No one could grasp why this girl would really want to pick a fight with Bria. Yet, Bria still did not take her seriously, and neither did I.
As time has passed by, we all brushed Ebony’s duel call off and continue watching the football scrimmage as planned. It is around 6:50 now and everyone is about to head out of Merner field. At 7:00pm we were all looking to figure out what was the next move. Neither one of us wanted to go home and be bored. So we ended up sticking together for a while and agreed on meeting up at Bria’s house in Langston Park. Around 7:15 Kiana’s cell phone rings violently again. However this time, it is a different person calling about the same subject. She did not even hang up the phone before relaying the information. While she clutched the phone to her ear, she turns to Bria and said, “This boy named Ron Ron is saying Ebony wants to know where you at so she can get her ‘one’.” We all turned to look at each other, then we looked at Bria, waiting for her response. Then Bria said, “Tell her to come ‘round Langston Park”. Kiana relayed the message and then hung up the phone.
It is now around 7:30pm. The other girls were on the porch waiting for Bria to change from her dress, to her battle clothes. In the middle of changing her clothes, Bria’s phone began to vibrate. She answered the phone quickly, and said, “Who is this?” followed by the slang term “aight.” and then hangs up the phone. The call lasted no longer than 15 seconds. After she hung up the phone, she began to jump up and down with excitement. It was as if she anticipated on this night. Although, that could not be it, because there was no preconceived notion before this night. Not too long after the phone call, my cousin Kesha, also her mother, came and asked her, “Who are you about to fight?” I had to tell her everything while Bria was still preparing herself for the fight. Then Kesha tells Bria “Oh well, don’t go to nobody’s house. If they wanna fight you, they need to come to you.” As Kesha spoke to Bria, she never gave one response. I answered every question that she asked. As I watched her every transition, it was as if the world around her was dead. She became blank, seemingly incoherent of everyone around her. I was trying to talk to her as she stormed out of the noisy medal screen door, but I was like a ghost to her. I could tell that her focus was elsewhere.
It is now 8:00pm. Everyone was outside waiting for Ebony to come to Langston Park and waiting for Bria to come out of her house. The whole entire neighborhood came out to watch the match. As I walked outside, I could see multiple silhouettes walking toward my cousin’s house. I realized that it was Ebony and her crew. My heart began to race as soon as I saw them. There were so many of them, I thought we were about to have a civil war. She stood in the middle of the street, confident with her white tank-top and black leggings. She looked about 190 pounds and three inches taller compared to my cousin who looked about 130 pounds. I honestly thought that my cousin was going to get hurt. As she stood in the middle of the street, I could faintly hear her say, “ain’t no talkin’.”About 30 seconds later Bria and Ebony charged for each other like sumo wrestlers. Bria, somehow took her body and slung her to the ground like a ragdoll. After she slung her, she instantly took advantage by sitting on her and pounding her in the face. Every hit to her face sounded like a hammer to the pavement. Ebony tried to fight back but she had no chance. I could hear everyone in the neighborhood shouting and telling Bria to let her get up. So then everyone gets them to fight again by separating them for a round two. I thought the fight should have been over, but it was not.
The second time around, everything seemed to happen exactly the same way. Whereas, this time, they ended up fighting between two cars with Ebony’s head close the curb of the sidewalk. While Bria was thrashing her face to a pulp, I began to feel bad for Ebony. I thought that Bria was going to kill her. I wanted them to stop fighting. More so, I wanted Bria to stop beating on her. Luckily, Kesha was outside to supervise the fight. Soon Kesha also felt that she was beating her too badly. In an attempt to break up the fight, Kesha grabs one of Bria’s hands to tell her to stop. Unfortunately, Ebony thought it was a perfect opportunity to hit her back, while still under the restraint of Bria. After she hit her, Bria became monstrous. She began to mercilessly hit Ebony over, and over, and over again while screeching in a demonic tone. Everyone’s voice that I heard throughout the scene became silent. Finally, Bria decided to stop and got up off of Ebony, allowing her to climb to her feet. This time, I really thought the fight was over and everyone was going home now. As soon as Ebony got to her feet, Bria smacked her back to the pavement one last time. We all paused to see if she would get back up or lay there motionless. Bria even hesitated before walking away in satisfaction. After about 20 seconds, Ebony finally got back on her feet. I was surprised that she was able to withstand any other movements after the beating she took. Not to mention how amazed I was that she called for a rematch, picture that.
Gladly, Bria never gave her that rematch either. I assume she figured that there was enough damage done to Ebony as it was. Ebony went home afterwards too. No one called the police that night. Even a couple of weeks went by without any law enforcements getting involved. Until, one day, Ebony’s mom went to talk to my cousin Kesha about the event that occurred. They carried on a civilized conversation like any normal adult would. Kesha told Ebony’s mother everything. A couple of days later, police came to issue her a court order. I would assume that anyone would know what happened to her after her court appearance. Kesha took the fall and went to jail. All in all, she did not have a choice because she was the only adult at the scene that night. Although Bria did most of the damage, she could not take any charges because she was a minor and she was in her residence. I will never be able to explain that night to anyone in any greater detail more than being in that moment. There was a time I feared for myself that night. There was a time I feared for Ebony that night. There was a time I even feared for my cousin Bria that night. Anything could have happened to any of us. We could have been in a brawl, one of us teenagers could have went to jail, or even worse, someone could have died. On the whole, by experiencing that unforgettable night, I do not think that I will ever see myself calling anyone out to a fight. In addition, I most definitely will never underestimate anyone.

Night

...‘Survival of the Fittest’ is defined as the continued existence of organisms that are best adapted to their environment with the extinction of others (Wikipedia: Survival of the Fittest). In Night by Elie Wiesel, in face of extermination the Jews of Sighet commit uncharacteristic ‘sins’. Fear had forced silence, fear had forced evil deeds and fear had turned the Jews against one another. The cruelties of natural selection is described in Night by Elie Wiesel, portraying the breaking of the human spirit, damaging faith in humanity, family, and God. Humanity, an important theme in Elie Wiesel’s memoire is portrayed as an ever changing proposition. The Jews of Sighet, and most importantly Elie, is seen struggling with his conscious based on the inhumane acts of oppression he has witnessed. In the beginning his faith is abundant and is evident through his trust in the German’s and disbelief in Moshie the Beadle (his mentor). “He told me what had happened to him and his companions. …The Jews were ordered to get off and onto waiting trucks. The trucks headed toward a forest. ...Infants were tossed into the air and used as targets for the machine guns” (Wiesel 6). Although, Elie did not believe Moshie at first the nightmares described by his mentor became a reality when he had first entered the concentration camps. The traumatizing events witnessed by Elie had caused him to question his faith in the human race while stripping him of reason to live. It was hard for him (Elie) to...

The Social and Economic Structure

...Greatsword/Longbow Recommended Build * In Zeal you want Fiery Wrath for 7% more damage that is almost always up unless you are soloing with scepter. In that case take Zelous Scepter. As long as you are using Greatsword you definitely want Zealous Blade for a reliable 5% DPS modifier and the cooldown reduction on Greatsword. If you’re not using Greatsword, go ahead and use Kindled Zeal. In the grandmaster slot you will want to take Symbolic Avenger with pretty much any weapon exept Scepter. When you are using Scepter you can take Shattered Aegis since that’s pretty much the only time you don’t have any symbols. * In Virtues we take Unscathed Contender – 20% more damage while under Aegis, or Master of Consecrations – Consecrations last longer and their cooldowns are reduced. It depends on whether we are able to keep up the Aegis buff or need to use Consecrations such as Wall of Reflection. If you need to maintain Projectile Defenses for your party then go with Master of Consecrations. In the second slot we can take Supreme Justice or Absolute Resolution depending whether we need Condition Removal or not. Absolute Resolution removes 3 conditions from each ally and yourself when activating VIrtue of Resolve and Supreme Justice will increase Burning duration and decrease the amount of hits needed to trigger burning from 5 to 3. The final choice is not really hard, it’s just what you need at a specific encounter. Permeating Wrath will change the burning Virtue of Justice applies...

Concentration Camps In Elie Wiesel's Night

...#2 Use details from the text to explain how human beings respond to the concentration camps. How do the attitudes, personalities and behavior change over time. In the story, Night by Elie Wiesel, a story is told by Elie Wiesel himself about how he and his family were captured by Nazis in 1944 and thrown into concentration camps. He recalls events that happened in that dark time period like how he and his father were separated from his mother and three sisters when they arrived at the first concentration camp, Auschwitz. Also, he talks about all of the horrible things that went on around him including the horrible conditions that he and his father had to go through. The people in the concentration camps changed throughout the story due to the circumstances they were in. The first thing that the reader notices about the people in the camps is that they had turned on each other and helped destroy each other physically while imprisoned by the Nazis. The reason for this is because they are each desperate to survive and will do anything to stay alive even if it means killing each other for food. Also...

Space

...Night time in space It is very easy to get busy up here and forget to “stop and smell the roses” as it were. (I think that is probably true for all of us everywhere!) So after dinner and before bedtime tonight I finally stopped and took a moment to watch the world go by during a night pass. It seems like it has been a while since I have done this. There are always excuses…other things that have to get done, e-mails to write, feet to warm up, too tired, there is always another day...blah, blah, blah. But I put my foot down, figuratively speaking, and took the time. We were passing up through the Atlantic going north across Africa and Europe and arcing down through Asia to come out east of Australia and New Zealand into the Pacific. I do not know exactly where we were but it was already night when I positioned myself at the docking compartment window. I think it was the one facing more starboard. I always get myself mixed up when I go into that module; I can never easily find the hatch again. It is completely night. There are thunderstorms across Africa and lightning is everywhere; bright flashes are going cloud to cloud illuminating the clouds as it arcs from one to the other. It is a private fireworks show. The storm is large and very spread out and at any moment you see 4 or 5 flashes occurring at one time, each one only lasting a moment. The colors range from something orange-ish to blue-white. Some are more like balls of light while others have that characteristic...

Heroism In Elie Wiesel's Night

...rippling behind, tightly clasped fist outstretched ahead, and a broad-shouldered, square-jawed face gazing down upon a helpless metropolis – this is the vision that is most often connected with the word “hero.” This iconic symbol is ingrained into the minds of toddlers all over the world, and it continues to capture the awe of movie-goers today. While this may be entertaining and certainly enjoyable, it breeds a false idea about what being heroic means. Heroes do not always have supernatural powers; they may not even aspire to fight evil. A hero is someone who faces the worst of what life has to offer but takes a chance – a brief moment of courage. Whether in realistic tragedies, comical science fiction, or in supernatural TV thrillers, heroes are just ordinary people who go out on a limb to do what is right. Elie Wiesel was only fifteen when he was taken to Auschwitz, one of the most horrific concentration camps of the Holocaust. In his memoir, Night, he tells of the dark and sadistic mistreatment of the Jews imprisoned in the camp. Among endless other tales of heroism, one man, who is not even named in the book, shows courage in a simple way that makes a huge impact on Wiesel. When they first arrive at the camp, this unnamed man secretly advises Wiesel and his father to lie about...

Analysis of "Tuesday" (Fight Club)

...it’s his boss who’ll do the presentation. While he does that, the narrator tells us about fight club and its eight rules. The first and second rule is that you don’t talk about fight club. The following rules are that when someone says stop, or goes limp, the fight is over, two men per fight, one fight at a time and no shoes or shirts are allowed during fights. The fights go on as long as they have to, and if it’s your first night at fight club, you have to fight. Fight club used to be just Tyler and himself, pounding each other, but it grows and is now held every Saturday. The story takes place at an office at the narrator’s work. It’s not directly written that it takes place there, but the reader can assume so by the fact that the narrator and his boss are doing a presentation for their client Microsoft. The narrator describes the location of fight club as well, which is set in the basement of a bar, after the bar closes on Saturday night. The basement is portrayed as dark with a single lamp. The lamp is placed in the middle of the room where the fights take place. That contributes towards creating an atmosphere where it’s the fight that’s in focus. The narrator of the story is also the protagonist. He lives two lives, “Who I am in fight club is not someone my boss knows” ; one as a recall campaign coordinator and one as a member of fight club. Before starting fight club, he was bored with his life and he felt that his “life just seemed too complete” ....

He's the Man

...He’s the Man We were sitting next to the wedding cake, flashing lights and music beats filled the open space under the night sky. As I sat next to my friend Brenda, I reached over and began asking her dad questions about his life, all of which lead to some intriguing stories. Brenda and I have been friends since high school and before this wedding night I had not met her parents. You see, Brenda and I were friends but she was a year older than me and graduated the year before I did, so meeting her family hadn't been an occurrence. He stood over me, a tall man with semi-long hair (for a male at least), with a trimmed mustache and a welcoming personality; He made me feel like I was part of his family, like if our meeting was meant to be. His sense of humor reminded me of the men in my family. He picked on his nieces, nephews, and even his daughters, getting everyone to laugh. And just like in many Hispanic families, he was admired simply for being a man. I enjoyed every minute that I shared with his family being that I had been away from home for almost a month and I wouldn't see my family for another 3. We started with basic questions like his name, where he grew up, his birthday and things of that sort. Mr. Angel Santos was born in Del Rio, Texas on July 4th.  Recounting his childhood, Mr. Santos tells me about one of his favorite childhood memories. “I learned to play music from a blind man. This man thought I was so talented that he one day told my father “Take him home;...

Commentary On Night By Elie Wiesel

...The book I read for this assignment is Night by Elie Wiesel. Night is a memoir about Wiesel's horrific experiences at the German concentration camps Auschwitz and Buchenwald. In Night, there are two main conflicts. We see Wiesel struggle with his faith in god and his faith in humanity itself. In the beginning of the book, we get to see a bit of Elie's life. Elie is a 13-year-old Jewish boy living in Sighet, Transylvania. "By day I studied Talmud and by night I would run to the synagogue to weep over the destruction of the temple" (20). Elie finds a mentor in Moshe the Beadle, a poor Hungarian immigrant that possesses a deep understanding of Jewish mysticism. Moshe and Elie pray together. Moshe the Beadle also helps Elie with his studies in...

Interpersonal

...Hunter Davis-Interpersonal Communication Fight Club Fight Club, a 1999 American film, is a brilliantly constructed film of escaping reality and dealing with pain in the famous art form of fighting. Director David Flincher adapted the film from the 1996 novel. Main actors, Brad Pitt as Tyler Durden and Edward Norton as the narrator, act excellently as they deal with their reality by celebrating violence in underground fight clubs. The narrator becomes involved in a relationship triangle between Durden and a self-indulgent woman, Helena Bonham-Carter as Marla Singer. This Rated R action/drama film takes you on a psychological twist as you learn about how a soap maker and a white collar employee seek out freedom and restoration of masculinity. I would rate this movie 4 out of 5 brains because although it gets confusing, it makes you think and as long as you pay attention you will be able to grasp the concept. On top of making you think, I believe it has educational value, such as for a psychology or English class, it is great to pick apart and analyze many of its aspects. This is a film you’ll be talking and thinking about for days. Edward Norton plays an unnamed narrator who is an everyman and a chronic insomniac. With an unfulfilling white collar job, his only dream is to own all of the contents in an IKEA catalogue. To deal with his pain, he seeks 12-step meetings where he can find comfort in people less fortunate than him and find relief in their distress. These meetings...

Club IT does not have the relationships that most successful club have with their consumers or contractors. For example Belasco night club in Downtown LA sub contracts to a professional radio station who makes appearances on certain nights and have professional relationships with music Stars who may be included for a certain percentage of the profits made from that night. The thing is the more you reach out and make connections such as a radio station or well-known DJ; they automatically have an fan base which will boost your ratings and boost your reputation with free promoting from each source. Unlike like Belasco’s venue they lack the technology, lack resources when it comes to customer’s appellation and just like any other club around the nation you need to make relationships with promoters who will bring and build your clientele. Club IT lacks many key components which could make the night time business a successful entity. Ruben and Lisa have a very nice venue again just right for the night time entertainment stream, but technology and lack of applications are major. Ruben...

Midnight on the Motorcycle

...fire and joined me on that highway divide As the smoke blew in the air, and its perfume my honey guide The phantom smiled its toothless snide and melted into the night. And there I stood on that lonely road casting my shadow by the red tail light And the red glowing stars, in the purple sky, casting mirrors in the stream site. And the faint smell of whisky still drifting in the air Made me long for my sweetheart and how in her eyes I could forever stare. Midnight on the highway, the tune of a song on my lips I whistle on this lonely road, my wheels crushing a few tobacco thrips. Crossing each dead man's turn I get further away from my home Thinking of friends some dead, some gone and most who left me alone. The hilt of my knife sits cold by my waist, the cold steel my constant friend The blade I have sharpened this twilight, fit to make its cold descend. It shall not feed I think tonight, at least, it is what I shall for the moment pretend I have had more than my share of misfortunes and dealt many a bitter end. The roaring engine tears through the darkness, every minute growing deep My frozen fingers clasps the clutch desperate not to fall dead asleep, And off across the hills, someone dreams in peaceful uninterrupted delight While I ride this unholy hour haunting the dark highways every night. ~ Saurav...

The Stowaway

...“The Stowaway” is a revolutionary story that presents a unique outlook on the age-old tale of Noah’s Ark. Told from the viewpoint of a bold, outspoken woodworm that sneaks onto the ship, the story defies the traditional telling of the classic flood story. Rather, the woodworm relates unheard of insight on the arduous trip within the ark, the humorous animals he experienced the journey with, and the untrue details that characterize the biblical story. However, the most remarkable information the woodworm includes in the story involves the character of Noah himself. In “The Stowaway,” Julian Barnes uses the voice of the woodworm to depict the character of Noah as a depraved individual. The woodworm brings to our attention Noah’s blind arrogance very early in the story. Noah made decisions and would not change his position even when it was brought to his attention that there were other points of view that might be better than his. As the text of the story itself says, “Animals of a speculative bent began to propound rival selection principals, based on beast size or utility rather than mere number; but Noah loftily refused to negotiate. He was a man who had his little theories, and he didn’t want anyone else’s”. (Barnes 8) This demonstrates the woodworm’s dislike for Noah’s lack of consideration of other’s feelings. Noah made up his mind about how he was going to select the animals for the ark. He would not consider alternative selection criteria. He refused to listen to the pleas...

...manner of lights that could make a blind man see and blind him a second time.” These were the words of the town’s tale bearer Akim as all the children gathered around him during the many black out night to listen. Electricity was not dependable in Ghana. Black-outs are not uncommon and five black-outs a day is not an exaggeration. Listening to Akim was like sleeping to sweet fairy tale stories only that there was hope of living this fairy tale. Akim continued “some have sworn that, even if their feet could just touch the soil of this land then death is allowed to whisk them away because they have seen an honorable sight.” Akim had never been to this land but knows everything about it. He was the go to person if you need to know anything about the United States. He claimed to have many of relatives as residents of this land. He often showed us post cards and gadgets sent to him from them. The post cards were true testimonies of the lights that run across this great nation. It was as though long ropes of lights run across the floor of every block, street and avenue. Of course, as an electricity and technology deprived people, we were quickly moved by our sight.
